Hogwarts Legacy Passes 22M Copies

Hogwarts Legacy

The highly praised yet controversial Hogwarts Legacy has surpassed 22 million copies sold at the end of 2023. It’s not too shocking that the Wizarding World adventure captured the hearts of many.

A Variety report indicates that Avalanche Software’s whimsical journey, which was released on both current and past-gen consoles, as well as the Switch later on down the line, made it to that milestone. No doubt the Switch release, which ended up during the holiday season, pushed the sales numbers forward more so than usual, as in December, it netted around two million sales.

It did have an extremely successful launch year, taking the top spot in sales in the UK, generating $1 billion, and smashing sales goals by over 200%.

“[Hogwarts Legacy] remains the best-selling game of the year in the entire industry worldwide. That’s a position that typically is held by one of these incumbent’s sequel games and we’re so proud that we’ve been able to break into the top rank…

Hogwarts Legacy Retakes Top Spot In Weekly UK Charts

Hogwarts Legacy

The most recent weekly physical sales data from the United Kingdom has seen Hogwarts Legacy reclaim the top spot thanks to a combination of early Black Friday deals and the recent Nintendo Switch version released on November 14. With Christmas just around the corner and many Potter fans to buy for, it’s no surprise the game has seen a surge back to the top.

The chart from GamesIndustry.biz, also saw a few new entries into the top 10, including Bluey: The Videogame at number seven and Super Mario RPG at six. The early sales have also seen other games rise the ranks, as Mortal Kombat 1 rose from 33rd to 10th within a week.

Last week, Portkey Games also announced on its support page that the previous Twitch drop rewards will be made available to everyone upon launching the game after November 13. Giving access to further cosmetics that players may have previously missed, including the likes of the full Charms Professor set.

Hogwarts Legacy Generates $1 Billion In Sales

Hogwarts Legacy

In the few months that it’s been out in the world, Hogwarts Legacy has garnered over a billion in retail sales. We already knew it was a success, but with the game releasing on past-gen consoles today after a delay, and reportedly running fairly well, it’s no doubt going to only go up from here.

The Avalanche Software Wizarding World adventure was released in early February to current-gen consoles only, with the promise of past-gen versions getting released a few months later for optimization reasons. According to Insider Gaming, its sales have only grown and led to a whopping one billion in sales.

This news also comes soon after rumors have begun circulating that there could be a sequel in development.

Its success can’t really be understated. Despite the controversy, Hogwarts Legacy was released to widespread acclaim from both critics and fans and achieved “256% to plan sell-thru at launch.” It was also Twitch’s most-watched single-player game of all time, with a staggering 1.3 million concurrent viewers.

Only time will tell if its release to the PS4 and Xbox One will actually make any difference in its sales or if it will start to mellow out.

Hogwarts Legacy Sequel Possibly In Development

Hogwarts Legacy

Tomorrow marks the game’s release on previous-gen hardware, following more optimization needed to make it run just right. Though, some are taking a recent job listing as an indication of a sequel.

Spotted by GameRant, it asserts the job listing’s line “unannounced AAA console title” is a clue. No one can deny the huge success the game was when it released, even critics that were deep in the controversy around the source material’s author praised its sprawling open world.

It’s also possible, though, since there are no plans for Hogwarts Legacy DLC, the studio might be working on a new game altogether. It isn’t unheard of that studios will sometimes split their attention between projects, after all.

Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions Announced

Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions

A brand-new Harry Potter game is in the works, Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions. This one appears more niche and likely not nearly as large-scale as Hogwarts Legacy was.

Developed by Unbroken Studios, which is currently also co-developing Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, and published by Portkey Games, much like Hogwarts Legacy, not a lot is known about this game. It’s not even confirmed that it will come to PlayStation consoles, but we know it is coming to consoles, and we can’t really expect the developer to decide not to release it on the PS5 at the very least.

This will possibly remedy the lack of Quidditch content in Hogwarts Legacy. Currently, you’re only able to sign up for a chance to participate in playtests. It seems Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions will — obviously — be mostly hinging on multiplayer, but it’s possible it will have some form of single-player, if at least for training and practice.

We also can’t omit the fact this isn’t the first time the Wizarding World’s most well-known sport has made it into video games. In 2003, Electronic Arts made an entire game that was released to the PS2 surrounding the sport — Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup — where you got to not just play as any one of the four Houses in Hogwarts but also a handful of countries participating in the same sport for their chance at the World Cup.

Hogwarts Legacy Smashed Sales Goals

Hogwarts Legacy

Hogwarts Legacy was always going to be a huge success, but we’d forgive you if you would be shocked to hear just how well it’s sold. Since before launch, the game has been rife with controversy, but that didn’t stop it from becoming a huge success, brandishing itself as a fantastic reentry to the space after not releasing anything since 2017.

As reported on LinkedIn by Warner Bros. Games’ senior brand and marketing manager, Arien Darby, the Wizarding World adventure achieved “256% to plan sell-thru at launch.” This is to say that it went above and beyond initial goals. The game also surpassed over 12 million units sold in a mere two weeks. It’s even already beaten FromSoftware’s award-winning Elden Ring in sales.

To top it all off, though, Hogwarts Legacy broke concurrent viewer records for a single game on Twitch, drawing in a whopping 1.3 million viewers watching someone else play the title. well beyond its sales goals
