Sea Of Thieves Tops PlayStation Sales Charts

Sea of Thieves released earlier this month to PlayStation after years of content developed exclusively for Xbox and PC. Well, naturally, a lot of people gunned for the chance to start their swashbuckling adventures.

Based on download charts on the PlayStation Blog, in fact, it seems to top the PlayStation Store. In the EU, it actually takes the top spot while here in North America it fits snugly in third place below first-party games like Stellar Blade and Helldivers 2, which is slowly getting back its positive rating on PC after backtracking on some not-so great decisions on Sony’s part.

This comes after a Circana report alleged the game finished in second place in the States. We assume this is probably due to a smaller number of Canadian folks looking to hop aboard, making the game falter a tiny bit behind from being higher in North America.

Beyond Sea of Thieves topping the PS5 charts, Fallout 4 tops the PS4 downloads across the board thanks to the Fallout TV show. Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge – Enhanced Edition takes home gold for PSVR 2 games, with Beat Saber naturally coming in second. VR boxing game Creed Rise to Glory tops the regular PSVR, with it a toss up between Beat Saber — in North America — and Job Simulator — in the EU — taking second place.

With the free-to-play tier, it’s expected — North America likes its Call of Duty: Warzone while the EU enjoys flossing and default dancing (excuse the cringe) in Fortnite.

Sea Of Thieves Is Rare’s First Game On PlayStation

Over three decades into its life and Rare has finally released its first game on the PlayStation. The studio does have a storied history releasing games on Nintendo and Xbox platforms.

Over on Twitter, it was revealed that the live service Rare title Sea of Thieves is heading to PlayStation 5, marking the studio’s first game on the platform. While the British game studio nears its 40-year anniversary mark, it’s never actually rubbed shoulders with any PlayStation platforms.

Nintendo had a stake in the company, meaning it was largely developing games for its library of consoles before getting acquired in 2001 by Microsoft, immediately turning it into a first-party developer for the Xbox. But, with Sea of Thieves arriving on April 30, with the help of Third Kind Games, which is doing the proper conversation, it’ll be quite the impressive step forward.

This is part of that same plan that Xbox had outlined previously.

Gears Of War Could Come To PS5

Gears of War

Industry insider Jeff Grubb is alleging that Gears of War will have a new home on the PS5. That’s not to say it’s definitive, but we do know something is going to be revealed soon.

During a recent Game Mess Mornings (thanks, Xbox Nerds), Grubb spilled the beans that the legacy Xbox shooter is under consideration to get a new version on other platforms. Such a sweeping change would certainly foster two different reactions — those who understand this to be a good thing for Xbox, as it consistently lags behind in physical console sales, thus releasing its first-party releases elsewhere on competing platforms gives it more recognition, and then those who despise the idea.

Regardless of your stance, this will at least give a new audience the option to play Gears of War and potentially other Xbox first-parties that they previously couldn’t.

What do you think? Is this a smart move on Microsoft’s part if true? Let us know below!

Gears Of War Narrative Lead Bails On Xbox To Work At Sony

In a surprising turn of events, Gears of War narrative lead Bonnie Jean Mah has left Xbox to work at Sony’s Santa Monica Studio instead as the studio’s latest narrative director. Basically, it’s from one “War” to another. It isn’t what she’ll be working on first just yet.

Mah announced the news on Twitter (thanks, Xbox Nerds), expressing great excitement about working at the studio and with the team. She didn’t say what she’s working on, but she could be working on the alleged God of War Ragnarok DLC, which is supposedly in the works. That said, the dev has been rather quiet about the rumor. The other side is the fact she’s literally choosing to stand in front of a statue of Kratos, so like… we know it’s probably just an indicator of where she’s working, but still.

Alternatively, the first-party dev also has a potential RPG in the early phases, which might be just the right starting point considering her experience with Age of Empires.

Call Of Duty 2024 Will Be Black Ops During Gulf War

Call of Duty

The next Call of Duty, which is in development at Treyarch, is going to feature the Black Ops branding. Considering Black Ops games are often more well-liked by fans, this was probably the best move on Activision’s part following the blunders with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Windows Central (thanks, Xbox Nerds) reports that the next COD will use the early 90s Gulf War as its backdrop and focus on the CIA and its role in the conflict. It will also pull the reigns back with more era-accurate firearms as opposed to the stuff we got during Modern Warfare and other more recent entries.

Considering this follows Modern Warfare 3 as the next Call of Duty, it will certainly have a bit of cleanup to do, but with Treyarch at the helm and its golden child Black Ops brand front and center, we’re sure it’ll probably at least end up with better fanfare than Sledgehammer Games’ short-campaigned COD entry.

Ghostwire: Tokyo Tops 4 Million Players

Ghostwire: Tokyo

Ghostwire: Tokyo recently dropped the Spider’s Thread, a free update that — among other things — introduced a tower mode, a new area to explore, new side quests, and more. Oh, and it also released to Xbox with bizarre optimization for a first-party Xbox studio. Nevertheless, it seems the game is making strides, as it’s just been revealed to have garnered four million players since launch.

The game’s official Twitter shared the news on Friday with a general “thank you” tweet alongside some notable reviews from major outlets.

It’s worth noting that sales numbers aren’t public, but Ghostwire: Tokyo is available on higher tiers of PlayStation Plus and available on Game Pass, so there’s no doubt that helped solidify some level of success for Tango Gameworks’ paranormal open-world romp, even if it’s since been overshadowed by its shadow-dropped Xbox exclusive, Hi-Fi Rush.

In our review, I praised its gameplay and story, saying it would “satisfy that weeb-y curiosity when it comes to Japanese folklore while also giving you a fair bit of busy-work to keep your playtime high.”
