Free Games For PlayStation Plus Essential Subscribers (June 2024)

Starting June 4, PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers and beyond are able to snag these high-profile games. Remember to snag this month’s free games before it’s too late.

Hot off the press, the PlayStation Blog shared the trio of free games for its Essential tier of subscribers.

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake

Kicking the trio of games off is a licensed game — SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake. This underwater adventure by Purple Lamp is the return of everyone’s favorite sponge under the watchful eye of THQ Nordic, which was in charge of publishing some of the franchise’s most-beloved platformers.

While critics found it underwhelming, its audience found a lot of charm behind this little licensed romp.

AEW Fight Forever

When you think of wrestling games, your mind probably gravitates toward the WWE line of games, but there are others, chief among them being AEW Fight Forever. This Yuke’s developed wrestler has a little of an older looking charm than its WWE counterpart, but it also looks to suffer from a similar fate — low scoring.

Just like most modern WWE entries, it’s not very well-liked, but it’s also not overly hated, either.

Streets Of Rage 4

The return of the classic side-scrolling beat ’em’ up, Streets of Rage, came in the form of Streets of Rage 4 back in 2020. Developed by a trio of developers consisting of Dotemu, which also acts as its publisher, Lizardcube, and Guard Crush Games, this return to classic beat ’em’ ups is the last in the Essentials line.

Unlike the other games, Streets of Rage 4 has seen praise from both fans and critics alike. Nostalgia probably plays a factor in it, but who are we to judge? We just wanna hit people.

October 2023’s PlayStation Plus Essential Games Have Leaked

PlayStation Plus

It would appear that some of October 2023’s PlayStation Plus Essential games have leaked – thanks expectedly to Twitter and Dealabs magazine contributor, billbil-kun. The dataminer has been accurate almost every month since September 2021, and now claims that two of next month’s Essential titles will be The Callisto Protocol and Farming Simulator 2022, available to download from October 3 until November 7.

Similar to September’s Saints Row, The Callisto Protocol reportedly didn’t live up to expectations. Only last week, Glen Schofield, the CEO of developer Striking Distance, left the studio. However, the studio claims it not to be related.

Each month, PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers can claim a few “free” games each month, with September 2023’s collection being Saints Row (PS5, PS4), Black Desert: Traveler Edition (PS4), and Generation Zero (PS4). If you want to claim any of these titles, ensure to do so before October’s games are released!

PS Plus Free Games for October: Supernatural Creatures and Speedy Getaways

Playstation Plus

It’s the spooky time of the year. October is here and along with it comes a couple new free games for PS Plus members. Vampyr is perfect for the horror month and Need for Speed: Payback, well, helps you get away from the monsters?

Vampyr

Vampyr is a solid action rpg that takes place shortly after World War I. You play as Dr. Jonathan Reid who has been turned into a vampire against his will. Whether you decide to give in to your bloodlust or use it for good is all up to you. A moody locale and interesting decisions make this a fun game to dive into for the spooky season. You can check out our review here.

Need For Speed: Payback

Released in 2017, you play as one of three characters with their own set of skills in an open world version of Las Vegas. Payback didn’t do quite as well as some of its predecessors but if you’re a fan of the series, it’s worth checking out. It’s an oddball choice for the month of scares but hey, it’s free.

The PS Plus free games will be available October 6th.

September Free PS Plus Games include a Battle Royale and Fighting in the Streets

This year is cruising by pretty quickly. Although, I’m sure that’s okay with many people considering everything that’s going on. But at least, if you’re a PS Plus subscriber, you get some cool free games. Sony has announced the two free PS Plus games for September. And they are both very well known.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, or more commonly known as PUBG, set the bar and paved the way for the battle royale genre. While not the first iteration of this type of gameplay, it definitely brought it into the limelight back in 2016 and 2017. You jump into an open map against 99 other players in a battle of wits and luck for the coveted last man standing.

Street Fighter V

Street Fighter is a series that has been around for quite some time and has garnered a pretty massive fanbase. This is their latest release and came out in 2016. Most of the roster will be familiar and includes all the arcade fighting gameplay people have been playing for generations. This release also conveniently comes out right before the Street Fighter V PS4 tournaments if that’s something you’re interested in.

Both games will be available next week, September 1st. Don’t forget to snag up August’s free games which include the hysterical and challenging Fall Guys.

Free PlayStation Plus Games Revealed For July

PlayStation Plus

As we grow closer to the next month, Sony has revealed what fans can expect the next batch of free PlayStation Plus games. On the three-game list are: NBA 2K20, Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration, and Erica.

NBA 2K20

NBA 2K20 launched in 2019 as another entry to the popular basketball simulator. It rose the ranks quickly and became was the best-selling sports game ever in the US.

Rise of Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration

Rise of Tomb Raider launched in 2015 with a follow-up in 2016. The 20 Year Celebration is its complete edition including all its DLC and extra content to make things interesting.

Erica

Games using cinematic shots are pretty few and far between. Erica is just that, a live-action, cinematic game following its title protagonist plagued by nightmares of her passed away father. It gives you control of the dialogue as you utilize its third-party app or the DualShock to interact with your surroundings.

This month also marks the 10-year anniversary of PlayStation Plus launching.

April’s Free PS Plus Games Include a Grand Finale and Racing Through the Dirt

Playstation Plus

What a crazy month this has been but it is coming to an end. With it comes a new month and a couple of new free games for PlayStation Plus members. The first is the finale of one of the greatest series to date, Uncharted 4. The second is DiRT Rally 2.0 and continues a long running series of off road racing.

Uncharted 4

If you had PS Plus in January, then you probably had a chance to pick up the Nathan Drake Collection. It included the first three games in the series. Round off the main story line with this installment of the series. It’s a finale that brings the tale of Nathan Drake to a dramatic close. There’s a reason this series is hailed as one of the best series ever for storytelling.

DiRT Rally 2.0

A successor to a long line of rally racing simulator games, DiRT Rally 2.o is the latest iteration of the DiRT series. Released in early 2019, this newest version includes the latest in graphics, weather, and car control. If you’re into racing simulators and rally racing, this is a great game to pick up.

And there you have it, the next free games for PS Plus members. Not a bad couple of games to hole up inside with. They will be available for download next Tuesday, April 7th. Until then you can still download Shadow of the Colossus and Sonic Forces.
