New Uncharted Movie In The Works

While we’re sure many would be relieved if Naughty Dog took a step back from The Last of Us to make something different, we’re sure not everyone is happy that Uncharted is working with a live action film and no new game since 2017’s The Lost Legacy. Well, apparently, it’s gonna be two movies as the next one is in development.

During a CineEurope presentation (via Variety), Sony shared its cinema plans, including bringing up the unlikely partnership between the PlayStation console maker and Nintendo. If you know, you know. We should also be clear, it’s not a surprise that Sony is working on the next Uncharted movie, as it was made clear multiple films was the end goal.

While obviously not confirmed, we’re left to assume the movie will continue on with its main cast of Tom Holland as the iconic Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as Victor Sully.

Gabe’s Glance: “Rockstar Mystique”

Hey, starting this off with a simple explanation of what Gabe’s Glance is — simply put, it’s a column written by yours. Sometimes, it’ll hammer down to one topic. Other times, it’ll be talking about stuff we either can’t talk about due to a lack of relevance for a PlayStation fan, or we have, but I want to give a more personal take on it without muddying the news.

This edition will cover a couple of topics.

Rockstar Pulls A Dev’s Blog On 20+-Year-Old Games

Rockstar Games has quite the reputation behind it, keeping its IPs very, very close to its chest, but who would’ve thought that would extend to an IP that’s dead in the water and games 20+ years old?

Long story short — Rockstar North shot an email to Obbe Vermeij, who recently started up a blog mainly focused on Rockstar North, as he used to work on the team. But it seems the dev wasn’t keen on this and effectively told him that he was harming the “Rockstar mystique.” He’s since pulled the posts, but they can still be accessed through Wayback.

To me, it feels somewhat wrong to abandon a game or, in the case of his GTA posts, jump on a former employee for discussing it without really harming the studio’s rep. He wasn’t ill-intended — he just wanted to talk about his time at the studio and give a little more insight from someone who used to be on the inside of the original development. But I guess Rockstar couldn’t have that.

Zelda Might Be Getting A Movie But It Should Be Animated… Like A Ghibli Film

In case you missed it, Nintendo’s working on a Legend of Zelda live-action movie, and not only is Nintendo all for it, following the tremendous success of the animated Super Mario Bros. Movie, but Sony is as well. That’s right, that bad blood is done and not only is Sony distributing the film, but it’s also co-financing it.

The key difference between this Zelda flick and the Mario Bros. movie is that it’s live-action compared to Nintendo’s previous partnership with Illumination. Of course, I’m more privy to animated movies, but whether this will prove successful is to be seen. Regardless, if you’re looking for a modern animated feature, a fan has spent four months working on a short film showcasing what Hyrule would look like if it were in the style of famed Japanese animation studio, Studio Ghibli.

For a team of two, with RwanLink doing everything from director duties to character animation and Mosik being in charge of the music, it’s an impressive feat. It starts actually pretty powerful — right with the death of the Deku Tree, and then seeing Link make his way to Castle Town. If Nintendo had announced a partnership with Studio Ghibli and Sony, I would be all for it and likely break one of my biggest “no-nos,” which is seeing it in theaters.

But, of course, that is a pipe dream, and I anticipate if Nintendo were ever to make another animated feature, it would be after Zelda’s done, centered around a completely different IP — perhaps Kirby — with Illumination again.

Can We Even Call The Last Of Us Part 2 Remastered A Remaster?

This has been racking my brain since day one — is The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered even a remaster? What got me thinking that? It was the inclusion of No Return.

Remasters are typically just revamped versions of already released games, games that come to mind include the likes of 2K’s BioShock: The Collection and thatgamecompany’s Journey. These are games that don’t typically add anything new but rather make the game compatible with newer hardware or generations. Maybe it’s a definitive edition that bundles in existing DLC, but that’s not adding anything brand-new.

We then have re-releases, which are just games that get ported over to a new console gen, usually with no added bells or whistles, think Red Dead Redemption for the PS4.

And then we have the remake, a game that entirely overhauls mechanics, graphics, and can sometimes be lumped into the remasters category. Games like Bluepoint Games’ Shadow of the Colossus, Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy, 2019’s The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, and Dead Space, all of which overhaul the graphics, gameplay, and sometimes even story.

Frankly, I feel like No Return is the remnants of what The Last of Us Factions was meant to have before Bungie encouraged a downsize, with it still in development, apparently. I feel like the game mode will feel a bit lacking for some because it was initially designed with more players in mind.

In the end, it doesn’t perfectly fit any of these categories — the closest it is would be a remake, as on top of graphical enhancements as small as they may seem, it also adds content and DualSense support. But I suppose Naughty Dog wanted to keep to “Remastered” in the name since TLoU Part 1.

HBO’s The Last Of Us Season 2 Abby Actress Possibly Leaked

HBO’s The Last of Us is poised for a second season, covering some of the original’s sequel, and it sounds like we now know who’s taken the controversial role of Abby. Nothing is confirmed yet, and with production starting in early 2024, there’s still plenty of time for things to change.

A report from The InSneider suggests that the role of Abby will be played by No One Will Save You’s Kaitlyn Dever. Supposedly, she had read for the role of Ellie during casting but, of course, lost the role to Bella Ramsey. She had also eyed Abby, though, having done a table-read of the character.

Her performance in No One Will Save You was what really tipped the scales in her favor. We should note that casting isn’t concrete here, as talks are ongoing, and production is still a ways away.

“I Have A Really Good Script,” Says BioShock Film Adaptation Director

With the release of his upcoming movie The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes hitting cinemas this Friday, director Francis Lawrence has offered an update on his upcoming film adaptation of the lauded 2K Games’ BioShock.

In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Lawrence provided an update on the project he is helming for Netflix, which seemed to have breathed life back into this anticipated adaptation. The film is written by Blade Runner 2049 and Logan scribe Michael Green, which Lawrence was happy to confirm is “a really good script.”

The film will closely follow the story of the 2007 original and aim to be as true as they can to the original story and vision of the game. Although the director has promised there will be “new little twists that will surprise fans.” So the film won’t just be a carbon copy of the game on the screen.

The film adaptation was previously stuck in development hell for what seemed like an eternity before the project moved to Netflix in 2022.  At the moment, this update is all we have to go on as there’s no upcoming release date in sight, as the film remains in pre-production at this moment.

“It’s good. I have a really good script. Oh, we have some new little bits in there, yes. I mean, the truth is it’s game one, so we’re being very true to a lot of it, right? So, we’re not breaking canon in any way. But we do have some new little twists that will surprise fans, but that all fit in. We have a really good script, I’m really excited about it.”

Sony Partnering With Nintendo On Live-Action Zelda Movie

In what feels like almost a fever dream announcement, Sony Pictures Entertainment has entered into an agreement to distribute and co-finance Nintendo’s next film venture — a live-action Legend of Zelda. This comes after the massive success of its animated Super Mario Bros. Movie, which breezed past over a billion at the box office.

As announced by Nintendo, Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto will act as producer alongside Avi Arad, who brought to life the hit Spider-Verse series. More than 50% of the film will be financed by Nintendo, while the remainder will be on Sony.

Sony is also going to deal with distribution and bringing the film to theaters. Considering the significant success of the Super Mario Bros. Movie, which saw Nintendo partner with Universal and Illumination, we can’t help but wonder if this will affect either company’s stance on each other within the game space.

Ghost Of Tsushima Script Completed

Ghost of Tsushima Film

After two years of development, Ghost of Tsushima director Chad Stahelski, best-known for the John Wick movies, has offered a promising new update on the film adaptation of Sucker Punch Productions’ flagship IP.

In a ScreenRant interview, he confirmed that the script by Takashi Doscher is now complete and that they are getting closer to moving forward with the project amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strikes. In his interview, he explained the difficulty of the current situation but remains hopeful they’ll have things moving forward soon.

The film is being produced by 87Eleven Entertainment and PlayStation Productions, with Sucker Punch Productions acting as executive producers on the project. There is currently no release window for the movie, and it is still unknown if the film will be in Japanese or English. By the sounds of it, we’re likely to hear more about production in the near future.

Ghost of Tsushima was first released on PS4 back in 2020 before being re-released on PS5 a year later.

“We have a script, we’re very close to getting our s–t together on that, as well. Development is always tricky, it’s studios, it’s strikes, and availabilities, and scouting. You have to will things into existence. I think the two things that I am closest and most interested in are Highlander and Ghost of Tsushima. Both amazing, amazing properties, the story of Ghost is, also, one of my favorite properties of all time.”

Are you excited for the Ghost of Tsushima movie? Do you think it’ll be one of the better video game adaptations or fall into the heap of disappointments like so many others?
