PlayStation Portal Remains A Best-Seller

Sony’s remote play device, the PlayStation Portal, has remained a top-seller since its introduction last year.

Game analyst Mat Piscatella took to Bluesky to share August numbers. Besides the Portal, the Midnight Black DualSense topped the chart in terms of accessories, the PS5 Pulse Elite Wireless Headset White was the best-selling headphones, and the PlayStation brand itself remains top dog followed by Xbox and the Switch.

The PS5 DualSense Wireless Controller in Midnight Black was August’s best-selling accessory in dollar sales, while PlayStation Portal remained the best-seller for 2024 year-to-date.

The success of the PlayStation Portal cannot be understated here, despite selling to a sub-group of a sub-group, that being gamers who want to play away from their PlayStation console, it still managed to be a surprise hit even outside of the States and even to Sony.

Sea Of Thieves Dominates PS Download Charts

PlayStation has shared its top downloads of May and perhaps unsurprisingly, Microsoft’s Sea of Thieves is topping the charts, surpassing the likes of GTA 5, Madden NFL 24, and Modern Warfare 3. The same goes for in Europe where the game sits at #1.

According to the chart on the PlayStation Blog, the live service pirate adventure is continuing to make waves (yes, pun intended) on the PlayStation 5. Madden NFL 24 is in second place in North America while in Europe, GTA 5 reigns supreme. Modern Warfare 3 also takes the third spot in NA while F1 24 wins in Europe.

Sea of Thieves is among the first games launched by Xbox to other platforms as a means to broaden its reach, a move that makes all the sense in the world, considering it frequently tracks behind both PlayStation Nintendo in many parts of the world.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Surpasses 11 Million Units Sold

Spider-Man 2

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has gone beyond yet another sales milestone, breaching 11 million units sold since its launch last year. Most of its sales, though, were within its first few months on the market.

During a presentation hosted by newly-appointed co-CEOs Hermen Hulst and Hideaki Nishino, it was announced that the game made that milestone as of April 20.

Not long before that cut-off date, though, Insomniac Games dropped a patch that introduced new features that no doubt contributed to the boost in sales, such as Mission Replay and New Game Plus.

We gave Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 a 9.5/10 in our review, calling it “a great sequel, combining the old and new with a fresh story, iconic characters, and instances of taking a side step and playing as MJ.”

Helldivers 2 Breaches 12 Million Helldivers

Helldivers 2

Arrowhead Game Studio’s Helldivers 2 has breached 12 million sales since its release in early February. This impressive number was helped in no small part due to its day-and-date release to PC, as well.

Interim CEO Hiroki Totoki revealed during its just released fiscal year earnings report that it surpassed the record set by God of War Ragnarok, which means that Helldivers 2 is Sony’s best-selling published game in its history.

It did have a rough patch earlier this month when  Sony was demanding PC players link their PSN to continue playing, only to backtrack at the last minute after intense backlash, leading to its PC reviews slowly but surely recovering from the controversy.

PS Exec Reveals PlayStation Portal Proves More Popular Than Expected

PlayStation Portal

The PlayStation Portal has proven more popular than Sony expected it would, with demand exceeding its expectations and the Japanese giant having to constantly send out more units.

In an interview with Game File, VP of product management over at PlayStation, Hiromi Wakai, expressed that the console wasn’t suited for everyone, but rather people with specific needs and wants to play in a “specific way.”

Despite the niche use case, it has proven very successful for Sony, with Circana charting it as the fifth best-selling accessory, though, Sony hasn’t properly addressed supply and demand issues leading it to firmly plant its feet in fifth place. Wakai, however,  assures fans that it is something Sony is aware of and working on fixing.

Helldivers 2 “Blows Through” Estimates

Arrowhead Game Studio CEO Johan Pilestedt has revealed Helldivers 2 has sold around a million copies. Bearing in mind, the game hasn’t even been out for a week.

On Twitter (via Insider Gaming), Pilestedt responded to a comment claiming the game hasn’t breached 500K sales, so it’s all too possible for it to play second fiddle to Palworld as its Steam sales rise again. He described the current top spot gap as “very large.”

Responding to another comment centered around Sony’s decision to almost never disclose sales numbers, he notes that the game is blowing through estimates at the very least.
