Death Stranding 2 Filming Concludes

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach has finished its filming and recording process and has moved onto the “adjustment phase.” The only caveat is it’s unclear if Hideo Kojima is talking about the English or Japanese cast.

During Kojima’s radio show, Hideo Kojima’s Radio: Infinity, the developer commented that filming and recording has concluded (via Automation Media). Supposedly, the phase it’s in now will last a year and will comprise of the team refining scene and control transitions.

We still aren’t fully sure when we can expect Death Stranding 2, but assuming it goes straight ahead, we could see it around the latter half of 2025. It does have a fair bit to live up to, with our review calling it “… a game about finding faith in the darkness, getting back what we’ve lost, and remembering who we are and why we need each other…”

“She’ll Think You’re Watching A Movie,” Kojima Says Of Physint

Hideo Kojima has further asserted that his upcoming action espionage game, Physint, will be like a movie, so much so that your mother will think it is one if she walks in on you playing it.

During his used-to-be dormant HideoTube series (via GamesRadar), the legacy developer expressed that while it will still skew toward being a game more than a movie, your mother may think you’re just watching a movie if she walks in. This aspiration is why the high-profile developer wanted to work with Sony Pictures.

We can’t imagine the level of detail Kojima plans on throwing into this, especially as this is a direct response to those fans pleading for a new Metal Gear game from him.

“… both a game and a movie at the same time. That’s why we were at Sony Pictures. Of course, it will be a game. However, if your mother walks in and sees you playing this game, she’ll think you’re watching a movie. I’m not sure how far we can take it yet.”

Kojima Productions Partners With Sony

The recent State of Play covered quite a bit in its 40-minute runtime. Among the standouts, include famed developer Hideo Kojima announcing his partnership with Sony with his new action-espionage game, codenamed Physint. From how it sounds, it’s gonna basically be a Metal Gear game without the branding, as it’s owned by Konami, which wants nothing to do with Kojima.

During the event, Kojima announced this new IP, one that will be a “next-generation action espionage game.” It isn’t in full development just yet, though, as the team is aiming to go all-in on it once Death Stranding 2 launches, which is aiming for a 2025 release.

As this is Kojima we’re talking about, the game was described as a crossover of a “movie” and game that will “transcend the barriers” of the mediums. In terms of Sony’s involvement, no doubt PlayStation Studios will dabble in its development, but more notably, its Columbia Pictures label is involved. Whatever it is this legendary developer has in store, we’re sure it’s gonna be something special.

Kojima Updates Fans On Death Stranding 2 Status

Kojima Productions founder Hideo Kojima has given fans an — albeit brief — update on the status of Death Stranding 2. The studio is working on simultaneous development of both the sequel and its new IP, OD.

In a post on Twitter, Kojima revealed that the game still has some ADR left, and after that, Japanese voice overs will be recorded. He then went on to express how he wishes he could focus on making games, but he has a lot of projects currently in the works, ranging from shooting for OD, existing collaborations, the long-awaited Death Stranding movie, and various smaller-scale projects.

He ended the post with a thank you for all the support.

Hideo Kojima Rewrote Death Stranding 2 Because Of The Pandemic

Death Stranding 2

Kojima Productions lead Hideo Kojima revealed that he rewrote the entire story of Death Stranding 2 following the first trailer released in 2022. At the time, he was vague as always about why, but lately he opened up.

Speaking with Japanese news publication Natalie (translated by VGC), the pandemic wasn’t part of the creative process like some believed it was. Kojima had already had the story written out before it all went down, but after living through the pandemic, things changed and his studio went through restructuring the story.

The original Death Stranding, which was one of the most mixed games out there, had a lot to do with connections and the pandemic led to a lot of development of remote work and “digital connections.” This digital connection thing didn’t sit the best with the former Metal Gear maker, as humans are “inherently explorers.”

He capped it off by noting how different things are now and how we’re now dealing with increased seclusion and division. The crux of the entire game’s story hinges on the message found in its teaser — “Should We Have Connected?”

“I also realized that digital connections alone couldn’t satisfy human needs. We are inherently explorers. Right now, we’re dealing with seclusion and division, and the world is undergoing significant transformations. We can’t rewind to our pre-pandemic reality, so we’ve had to reassess the concept of ‘connection.’ In Death Stranding 2, the interpretation of ‘strand’ evolves. You’ll notice, at the end of the teaser trailer, a message that says ‘Should We Have Connected?’ That’s the crux of what we’re trying to articulate in the sequel.”

Death Stranding 2 Needed To Be Rewritten If Elle Fanning Refused Role

Death Stranding 2

If Elle Fanning had refused her role in Death Stranding 2, Hideo Kojima would need to head all the way back to the writers’ room and rework it. The role the actress plays is still under wraps but has been established to be important.

During his Brain Structure podcast (via PSLS), Hideo Kojima discussed how the pair’s first meeting struck him with multiple ideas that would have needed to be axed if Fanning decided not to be part of the sequel to Kojima’s first venture since leaving Konami.

“I changed a lot, I even added in new scenes. So we changed stuff during performance captures, but I wanted actors like Elle to be a part of the creative process.”

Luckily, she agreed and will play a “very important character.” We also get to see Norman Reedus make a triumphant return as Sam Porter, Léa Seydoux as Fragile, Troy Baker as Higgs Monaghan, and Shioli Kutsuna as a brand-new character. Death Stranding 2 won’t, however, feature Heartman.
