Sony’s Event In December Will Surpass Their E3 Showing

Okay, so they haven't spilled the beans yet. They just announced a bunch of games on tap for the event, and nobody is shocked.

But if you really think about it, this could – and should – surpass Sony's E3 2014 showing.

The confirmed titles alone make it a contender for one of the best conferences of the year, and if the rumors are true and Sony unveils a few new PS4 exclusives, it's gonna be epic . I think it's interesting that Sony is pushing this event so hard; they've called it "massive" and they're obviously not pulling any punches. Just about every major upcoming game for their new console might be on display, and that could include brand new projects we've never heard about before.

It almost makes me wonder if this is designed to keep PS4 interest high throughout the holiday season. Remember, they don't really have a high-profile exclusive to help push the new system over the next few months. There's LittleBigPlanet 3 but that doesn't really have the necessary firepower (and don't forget that it's also on PS3). The Xbox One, on the other hand, has Sunset Overdrive and a few others, so one could argue that Microsoft has the holiday edge. Not to mention that recently announced price cut.

But even if Sony is using this as more of a marketing ploy, so what? It could be absolutely incredible!

PSXE Poll Update: Sony Won E3 2014, But It Was Close

Another year, another post-E3 evaluation.

When we asked our readers which of the "Big 3" won the battle of the conferences, the majority of participants said Sony came out on top. Maybe that's not too surprising, but it's interesting that a whole lot of people voted for "all three" or "none."

This tells us that most viewers considered E3 2014 to be a close race. It's true that Sony unveiled several hugely promising games, and one could argue that strictly from a software standpoint, Sony typically wins these E3 presentations. But it's not like Microsoft and Nintendo were light on the games during their conferences; it seemed like all three companies were intent on focusing on software. And that's what we like to see.

This week, we want to know your thoughts on the Destiny alpha. Obviously, you would've had to have played it to form an opinion, right? If you did, what say you? Is it a fantastic start to what could be the Game of the Year? Or were you a little disappointed? Let us know.

PSXE Poll Update: Sony’s E3 Presentation Rated As “Great”

So, how would you rate Sony's E3 conference this year?

Well, the majority of our readers say it was great, worthy of earning an 8 or a 9 on a scale of 10. A fair percentage said it was downright fantastic, while many others said it was merely "good" (earning a 6 or a 7). This means the show went over quite well, yes?

It's true that we didn't get many surprises, as we didn't see anticipated projects like The Last Guardian , a new God of War , Kingdom Hearts III , or rumored titles such as Heavenly Sword II . However, Sony once again put the emphasis squarely on games and as far as most core gamers are concerned, that's an automatic win.

Speaking of winning, which manufacturer "won" E3 this year? Did Sony do enough to win? Did Microsoft steal the show? Or, did Nintendo really step up to the plate? Of course, there's always the possibility that you consider the show a three-way tie this year, and we wouldn't blame you if that's your contention.

E3 2014 Sees Record Attendance, Dates Set For E3 2015

This year's E3 was another success, although there were fewer exhibitors.

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has reported that 48,900 industry reps and journalists attended E3 2014, slightly up for the 48,000 that came last year.

However, while E3 2013 played host to 230 exhibitors, there were only 200 at this year's show. That may not be a big deal to the city of Los Angeles, though, as E3 once again raked in around $40 million in revenue. Furthermore, E3 2014 surpassed its previous social media record numbers on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, with over two million related posts combined.

Said ESA CEO Michael D. Gallagher:

"The video game industry's explosive growth and technological innovation were front and center at E3 2014. Video games are the most innovative and engaging force driving our culture and entertainment experiences the world over."

The dates for next year's show have already been confirmed as well: E3 2015 will once again be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center and the show will run between June 16 and 18. It's interesting to note that in the future, E3 may leave the standard stomping grounds; perhaps they'll seek a bigger venue…? Not sure it's necessary, considering the numbers, but you never know.

A Die-Hard PlayStation Fan’s Response To Sony’s E3: “Meh”

Yes, the fan in the headline is me.

For the record, I don't think Sony's E3 2014 conference was bad. In fact, I think it was just fine; if I was to assign a grade, I'd go with a B or a B-. Above all else, the emphasis was on the games (despite some slight VR and TV-related deviations), and that's what PlayStation has always been about.

I also loved some of the new trailers, and I still say Uncharted remains head-and-shoulders above any other established franchise in gaming. Bloodborne could be amazing as well, and it was nice to see LittleBigPlanet 3 , because Sony really needed another exclusive for the holiday season (you can't just rely on Driveclub ). It was also pretty clear that shooter fans will want to play Destiny on the PS4, exclusive betas are never a bad thing, and that Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain trailer was awesome .

However, it lacked that trademark "oomph" we often see from Sony at E3. Perhaps the biggest problem is the lack of surprises, and while a few new exclusive IPs are great, I really wanted to see The Last Guardian and either a new God of War or Gran Turismo (or both). Guerrilla Games didn't show off their new game (supposedly a PS4-exclusive RPG), and with no Final Fantasy XV or Kingdom Hearts III , the show just didn't feel very…I dunno…"PlayStation-y," I guess. Maybe the problem is that it felt too much like Microsoft's conference, and those are rarely all that exciting.

The only part that really felt like PlayStation was when they showed off that upcoming suite of smaller PS4 exclusives; i.e., Abzu , Let it Die , No Man's Sky , etc. Beyond that, I was never really enamored with that show, were you?

P.S. Here's one problem: No Jack Tretton! 🙁

E3 2014: New Games From Giant Squid And Suda 51

Several new PlayStation 4 games have been revealed during Sony's press conference, and many look pretty fantastic.

For instance, there's the latest twisted new IP from Suda51 and Grasshopper Manufacture called Let It Die ; the live-action trailer was definitely pretty sick.

Then there's the new one – called Abzu – from the talented team at Giant Squid; the game reminds one of Journey …except this one is underwater, as opposed to a desert setting. It looks just as involving and artistically inspired as Thatgamecompany's award-winner, so we can't wait to check it out.

Oh, and they just showed off Hello Games' No Man's Sky , which could end up being one of the most ambitious projects of the generation. The trailer is very intriguing, and the developers have said the game will be different for everyone, as everyone will start in a completely different part of the vast universe. How awesome is that?
