Activision Ditches True Crime Trademark

Hope you're happy with Sleeping Dogs 'cuz it looks like True Crime is dead and buried.

Last generation, the open-world action/adventure True Crime was quite popular and for a while, we heard about a third installment for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.

But it never happened; Activision canceled the project and later, Square Enix picked up the rights and transformed it into the ultimately successful Sleeping Dogs . Fans of the first True Crime games keep hoping for a true (pun intended) sequel but it probably won't happen: According to The Games Cabin , Activision has ditched the True Crime trademark.

Guess that means it's done. But really, do we need it? A follow-up to Sleeping Dogs will suffice, right?

Check Out The Upgrades In Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition

If you missed the game in 2012, you should definitely consider the upgraded iteration.

Square Enix has released the first gameplay trailer for Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition , and we can see many of the improvements the developers have made for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC iterations.

Updates include native 1080p HD resolution, heavier traffic, more pedestrians, new lighting and atmospheric effects, and "extensive" texture improvements. Square Enix claims that these upgrades are so significant, that the game's setting of Hong Kong "becomes more than a location; it becomes its own character." Sleeping Dogs was easily one of the most entertaining games of 2012, and these improvements will undoubtedly make it even better.

The Definitive Edition will launch on October 10.

United Front Games “Loves” The Idea Of A Sleeping Dogs Sequel

Would you like to see a sequel to Sleeping Dogs ? So would United Front Games.

The developer would "love" to pursue a follow-up effort to the well-received 2012 title but unfortunately, it's not going to happen anytime soon.

The team is currently focused on a free-to-play project for PC, Triad Wars , and that means any thoughts of a Sleeping Dogs 2 have to remain on the back burner. But as producer Justin Bullard said during a recent Reddit AMA :

"Right now we are totally focused on making Triad Wars as awesome as it could be. But [we] would love to continue making games in the Sleeping Dogs universe."

The first game was originally entitled True Crime: Hong Kong and it was slated to be published by Activision. But the latter company dropped it in February 2011 and later, Final Fantasy publisher Square Enix picked it up and rebranded the project. It turned out to be a good move as the game sold well and turned out to be profitable for Square Enix.

If you missed out, they'll release a Definitive Edition for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC next month. It'll boast 1080p visuals and all 24 DLC packs!

Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition Set For Next-Gen Systems

If you missed out before, you'll soon be able to remedy the situation.

It isn't official just yet but Amazon has apparently outed the Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition , which should release for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 14.

This new version boasts all the downloadable content previously released, and the game has been "rebuilt specifically" for next-gen platforms. The only version on display at the online retailer is the $59.99 Limited Edition, which includes a special art book packaging that offers 28 pages of concept art. This is just another in a growing string of remakes, HD upgrades and definitive editions but hey, no reason to complain.

A New Game Set In The Sleeping Dogs Universe: Triad Wars

Sleeping Dogs was one of the most entertaining games of 2012. And we all want a sequel of some sort, right?

Well, maybe it won't be a sequel, but it'll still be set in the Sleeping Dogs universe. Developer United Front Games has announced a new project called "Triad Wars." The news comes shortly after Square Enix filed a trademark application for that title on September 30.

Here's part of the announcement:

"It's something we've wanted to do for ages, and we're very happy to be working with Square Enix again… but that's all we can give you for the time being–we'll have more information about what the game’s going to be in 2014."

So, what do you want to see in the new game? If you enjoyed Sleeping Dogs , as so many did, what about it really appealed to you? And what would you want to see United Front Games improve upon with Triad Wars ? I'm just happy we're getting another game set in that environment, which was great; it reminded me of a more dynamic Yakuza setting, in fact. Here's hoping Triad Wars will be announced for next-gen consoles soon!

Tomb Raider Tops 4 Million, Sleeping Dogs Was “Profitable”

Gee, for games that didn't hit internal sales expectations, these two great titles still did pretty darn well.

In a recent Gamasutra post , Square Enix head of product development Darrell Gallagher revealed some very positive numbers for both Sleeping Dogs and this year's extremely popular Tomb Raider reboot.

First, Lara's new adventure managed to sell over 4 million copies, and it was the fastest-selling installment in the history of the franchise. It also became the "most critically acclaimed title" ever created by developer Crystal Dynamics (we certainly liked it a lot ). We have also heard that a next-generation effort is on the way, and we can't wait to see where Lara goes next! Just give us the same sort of gameplay structure, a whole new story and environment, and we'll be happy. Uncharted with a bit of freedom!

Gallagher also revealed that the formerly named "True Crime: Hong Kong," Sleeping Dogs , has proven profitable for Square Enix. He says that over 500,000 people per month continue to enjoy the well-received 2012 title. Hitting profitability was a "critical milestone" for the title although he didn't give us a final sales total. Square Enix announced earlier this year that Sleeping Dogs had shipped over 1.5 million units.

Lastly, Gallagher regrets that his company "walked away too early from these games," as he believes players would've appreciated more content. That may be true, but I for one am fine if a game just ends. …that's kinda the way it always used to be, remember?
