Sleeping Dogs Dated, Pre-Order Goodies

The game formerly known as True Crime: Hong Kong now has a date and plenty of attractive pre-order incentives.

The ambitious, gritty project from United Front Games is slated to land in North America for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC on August 14. If our preview has piqued your interest and you're ready to toss down a deposit, you should know that GameStop, Amazon, and Best Buy have goodies a-waitin'. Just gotta be proactive.

If you pre-order at Best Buy, you'll get the Georges St. Pierre (GSP) Pack, which features GSP's signature "flying punch," granted by an exclusive GSP outfit. The outfit also has the benefit of increasing grappling and throwing damage. If you opt for GameStop, you'll nab the Police Protection Pack, which includes a special "High Speed" mission, an HK Police SWAT outfit, an assault rifle, and a SWAT police vehicle (all exclusive to the retailer). If you'd rather go with Amazon, you'll receive the Martial Arts Pack, which grants you the "Shaolin Showdown" mission, the Shaolin Warrior outfit (increased striking damage), bonus Triad XP points, and a Wing Chun decoration for the safehouse (with temporary combat buff).

As we've said before, this reminds us of a crazier Yakuza , and that could mean lots of entertainment.

Square Enix Confused: Why Did Activision Ditch True Crime?

What was once True Crime: Hong Kong is now Sleeping Dogs but for a long time, the project was shelved.

A title by United Front Games, Activision was supposed to release True Crime: Hong Kong but eventually, they just dropped the idea. Since that time, Square Enix picked it back up and is now running with it; the interesting part is they seem to think they got a bargain.

Why? Because according to what S-E London's Alastair Cornish told IncGamers , the project was in "great shape."

"…when we first saw the title we were scratching our heads trying to figure out what Activision were playing at because we thought it was in great shape."

He added that they gave the developers more time, and commended United Front Games on the particular aspects of the title that were impressive. Also, with experience in the action genre this generation, Square Enix has brought some upgraded knowledge to the project, which should prove useful. True Crime has always been an interesting series; relatively well-received by critics and gamers, and always sporting a really intense, gritty, in-your-face atmosphere and style.

We'll be looking forward to Sleeping Dogs , and we hope Square Enix is right when they say the developers know what they're doing.
