PlayStation Experience Will Feature Gran Turismo, God Of War?

Sony says we can expect a few "surprises" at this year's PlayStation Experience.

Well, I'm willing to bet you'll see both Gran Turismo 7 and the next God of War . One source, who chooses to remain anonymous, claims GT7 was actually supposed to have been shown off at E3 but it was a last-minute scratch (for reasons unknown, apparently). That same source it's "definitely" showing up at PlayStation Experience 2015 in December.

This source has been right before but he just recently got out of the industry, so his information may not be as current (or reliable) as it used to be. Take it with a grain of salt. I have no evidence of a new God of War but I say it's long overdue, and it would be a seriously huge PlayStation 4 exclusive that Sony desperately needs right now. Of course, I'm sure it's still a ways off but at least we'd get to talk about it, right? Just confirm it, Sony Santa Monica.

At any rate, if there are going to be fireworks, expect them from the GT and/or GoW camps. I'm hoping we hear from both.

What Does God Of War Need To Do To Maintain AAA Status?

It's one of the most revered franchises in video game history.

In fact, the first three titles are some of the highest scoring games ever, even if the last installment – Ascension – slipped a little.

Hell, even the PSP games rocked. So, what does God of War need to do in the new generation to retain its lofty status? Should we get a new protagonist and a fresh theme and environment? Many fans are calling for all-new everything; a fresh start. But is that the right move? Wouldn't a lot of those fans love to see Kratos on PlayStation 4? Isn't Kratos synonymous with that franchise? At this point, would it be like supplanting Solid Snake or the Master Chief or something like that?

Perhaps it's a better idea to have Kratos visit another setting or time period. I think you can ditch the Greek mythology setting easier than you can ditch the protagonist; he just seems like a central piece of the series, you know? What do you think? What should Sony Santa Monica do with the new entry? We all know it's coming and some of us are on pins and needles awaiting the unveiling… Ready for E3?

Strangely, Sony Santa Monica Keeps Teasing And Deleting

Sony Santa Monica seems to be jumping the gun a lot recently.

First, they sort of revealed a new God of War for PlayStation 4 on Twitter but the Tweet subsequently disappeared. Then, they make mention of another PlayStation Experience and that disappears, too.

The trend, as spotted by DualShockers , implies that the team keeps saying things they shouldn't. The most recent example involved the following quote posted in a blog update:

"And while I’m sure the PlayStation Experience will be back for Round 2 sometime late next year, we expect that Santa Monica Studio will play a significant role in it yet again.""

That doesn't mean much but it still dropped off the face of the planet. I suppose Sony just didn't want anyone talking about another PlayStation Experience just yet (maybe they're not sure they'll do it again), or maybe the Santa Monica crew wasn't really sure they'd be featured at the event. All of this indicates that the announcement of a new God of War might be farther off than any of us would like…

Better For PS4: A New God Of War, Or Gran Turismo 7?

With the rumor that Sony might announce two AAA PS4 exclusives in December, it begs the question:

What does the PlayStation 4 need more? A new God of War or Gran Turismo ?

In other words, which would result in better hardware sales? There's no guarantee that either of these games will be announced later this year, but we have to assume both will eventually arrive, so the question remains relevant. On the one hand, God of War is one of the most acclaimed franchises in video game history, and a new GoW adventure on an awesome new console would be huge . Don't forget that these installments typically flaunt the power of the PlayStation brand, so it might be a good idea to produce a new entry ASAP.

On the other hand, Gran Turismo has always proven to be a big money-maker for Sony because it so frequently pushes hardware sales. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec pretty much defined the summer for the PS2 back in 2001, remember? And of course, GT always showcases the power of a PlayStation console as well. Racing is also an extremely popular genre around the world, and could result in a major global bump for PS4 sales. Even the name "Gran Turismo" still carries a ton of cache in the industry.

Damnit, Not Another Port, I Want A New God Of War On PS4

Okay, this one, I don't get.

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition ? Sure, it celebrated the positive overhaul of a video game icon and it turned out to be amazing for new PS4 owners .

The Last Of Us: Remastered ? Absolutely. The very best game of 2013 – and easily one of the best of the entire previous generation – and of course, the PS4 can't play the PS3 version, so… Spread the awesomeness.

But a PS4 version of God of War: Ascension ? Why? According to industry insider Shinobi602 (as cited by DualShockers ), Sony will indeed deliver the most recent GoW entry to the PS4. Granted, we have no idea what might be included in this re-release of sorts but even so, I don't want it.

Look, as good as Ascension was, I still deemed it a step back in the esteemed franchise. Many other critics felt the same way. It's just not the game we need on the PS4 right now; rather, we need the announcement of a new GoW installment. But wait, perhaps that's precisely the reason we're getting Ascension on PS4; maybe it's to prepare us for that new effort! I'm trying to be positive here.

It would help the PS4's nasty reputation of "having nothing but ports and digital titles" if they just stopped announcing more ports.

What Direction Will God Of War Take In The New Generation?

Sometimes, it's easy to forget that God of War is one of the most revered, acclaimed and beloved franchises in video game history.

It's even easier to forget after last year's God of War: Ascension fell a little shy of expectations. While still a downright great action game, it was the first series entry (fantastic PSP installments included) that wasn't worthy of an elite 9+ review score. At least, in our estimation and the estimations of many other critics and gamers.

So, what direction will this series take in the new generation? The IP is simply too important to the PlayStation brand to abandon; that won't happen. However, Sony Santa Monica may have to reboot or at least reinvent the franchise. We've been hearing rumors about a new setting and even a new protagonist, mostly because the team feels they've done everything they can do with Kratos. That's mostly speculation, though; inferences drawn from statements made in various interviews. There's really no knowing for sure what the next GoW title will be.

What do you think? Will they bring Kratos back? He's synonymous with the title now; ditching him would almost be like ditching Snake in Metal Gear Solid . Then again, maybe it has to be done in order to infuse the franchise with new-found freshness. Or, perhaps they can just drop Kratos into a different era/setting. A time-traveling Kratos! Okay, that's a little corny but hey, just spit-balling here. Ideas?
