It's one of the most revered franchises in video game history.
In fact, the first three titles are some of the highest scoring games ever, even if the last installment – Ascension – slipped a little.
Hell, even the PSP games rocked. So, what does God of War need to do in the new generation to retain its lofty status? Should we get a new protagonist and a fresh theme and environment? Many fans are calling for all-new everything; a fresh start. But is that the right move? Wouldn't a lot of those fans love to see Kratos on PlayStation 4? Isn't Kratos synonymous with that franchise? At this point, would it be like supplanting Solid Snake or the Master Chief or something like that?
Perhaps it's a better idea to have Kratos visit another setting or time period. I think you can ditch the Greek mythology setting easier than you can ditch the protagonist; he just seems like a central piece of the series, you know? What do you think? What should Sony Santa Monica do with the new entry? We all know it's coming and some of us are on pins and needles awaiting the unveiling… Ready for E3?
Related Game(s): God of War 4
Kratos is the god of war. You don't revoke that from him until another does what he did to Ares.
Anyways I'm in the group that says keep Kratos as the protagonist. I really don't know what they should do next as I've never felt the games were declining, and that's not my job to decide. Ascension was as good as any of them, it's too bad it went backwards. So really, don't do that. I want to know what happens next.
I would've preferred Ascension being remastered first.. but oh well.
Would have been nice to have a bundle, maybe! I mean Ascension has the mp too, and rather good mp at that. Might have drawn in those still playing in PS3.

I'm a little annoyed they're not releasing all of the GOWs in a single package, though in fairness they'd probably be accused of gauging fans if they did. Too bad, though — I'd love to have a remastered collection of the entire God of War Saga in one box.
The previous gen gave us both GoW and GoW2 in one pack for $40. Relatively I believe GoW2 was a newer game at the time too comparative to the GoW3 gap.
It's just not as good of deal. This is especially so when you consider that a PS3 version of GoW3 can be had for like $5 these days. Is 60fps and 1080p really worth $40? Comparatively to the DMC4 remaster which adds cool and new content the GoW3 one seems really lacking.
I suppose GoW3 Remaster is more about bringing GoW to those who are new to PS. Either that or the real diehards.
I'd say the average PS gamer would be better off spending their money some place else until Sony slashes it to $20.

maybe have him continue as the God of War until the reign of the Romans where he takes the name Mars and battles the monsters of Roman mythology. That would keep him fresh and new without changing anything drastically
NO MORE PREQUELS, they should keep Kratos and I still want my Kratos vs Thor boss fight.

Make kratos fight titan from Attack on Titan…
The gods rise to power would be pretty awesome! Having them battle the Titans would be amazing!
It's difficult to change the setting and the time, and hence the character, without changing the game. I think it might be best to lay it to rest. Anything additional to the series would just feel tacked on. An idea to add a conclusion, or even a couple more games is have Kratos move to another land, like Egypt. He tries to start over to close his past, and marries a wife, and has children. He discovers that there are beings in control here, and he must end their legacy to begin a new. And/or, He has children, and their descendants take on the ruling powers to be in the future (a la Assassin's Creed).
I can't believe I'm the only one saying this. Have him continue from III and gets a new guardian like his dead wife. Athena get reincarnated somehow and Kratos has to kill her once and for all since she's venging on him taking her power and throwing it way. Now she has to gain it all back and become powerful enough to kill Kratos. Make her become the antagonist that Zeus was. On his journey have him defeat bosses like the giants, Jason, Herecles, etc.
I'd welcome this idea.
New story, setting and new main protagonist. Kratos' story is done, he's done killed Zeus. His pissed off shtick is old, and people are tired of it. New GOW, with a better story to refresh the series please.
im actually kind of on board with that idea, maybe give a new protagonist and more upbeat personality
To appeal to modern audiences…
Open world with fast/instant travel. Checkpoints every three and a half seconds. Story so simple it makes your mind crunch at how oblivious the developers think you are. Multiplayer modes that has plenty of game-breaking mechanics. Horde modes for co-op, ensure the enemies are some form of zombie. Tons of QTEs for difficult parts, but not enough to make people notice the QTEs. Seven endings, six of which are slightly different while only one being absolutely different. Twenty weapon styles that way people can feel theres diversity when in truth, they only use one or three. Tons and tons of gore, while also leaving animals deaths out of the picture. The protagonist needs to be a hispanic/african/transvestite/lesbian who loves kids and is stronger than all male characters by default.
If you want to stay true to the series, new protagonist from a completely different setting and throw him/her into the Zeus stuff. New gameplay to suite the new character and remake all bosses in a new art style and new way they fight. Reusing assets while also staying fresh and new. Imagine a Samurai or a warrior monk replacing Kratos. An entire new setting would be best, but Greek mythos has so many deities to choose from, finding another would be a ton of work. Blending several together could be cool too.
Either way, I would rather them stay true to the series and not go the route of the casuals. People complained about the ending to Evil Within… HOW CAN YOU NOT UNDERSTAND?!
It needs to get rid of multiplayer and focus more on the campaign unlike Ascension which was probably the worst in the series.
We also need an epic Kratos Vs Athena boss battle.
Ascension was not the best in the series. True. But it in fact was a spectacular game. People are upset that it felt like it was tacked on and was a prequel. But the solid gameplay, story telling, amazing graphics, boss fights and combat was all there and improved upon in some aspects over previous entries. I would argue it had the most refined combat of any of the others.
Just because people wanted something different doesn't make it a bad game. Oh and the mp was pretty good to. Any fan of GoW would at a minimal appreciate the effort despite really only wanting and needing a sp campaign. The mp screamed everything GoW represents.
Im in agreement that from now on if Kratos is involved the series needs to move forward though. Although they did make progress while regressing in the story, what's best for the series at this point is to somehow move the story forward.
Im all for a Kratos vs. Athena battle. Make that happen.

Don't get me wrong, the game was by no means bad and as you said had some spectacular sequences and some of the more memorable enemies in the series (Elephantaur was brilliant imo) it just felt rushed as a release compared to the rest of the games in the series.
Granted, Chains of Olympus was short but i can excuse that considering that was made primarily for handhelds. Ascension however felt relatively short in comparison to the earlier console releases from PS2 and PS3 and part of me feels that the multiplayer was part of that. I also feel the plot needs to advance on from the prequel phase it's going through which we have had to put with for three releases now.
If they can fix these minor quibbles then there is absolutely no reason for God of War 4 not to be another hit in Santa Monica's already robust portfolio.
Glad we can both agree on the Kratos Athena battle, that just needs to happen.

I think your probably right that the mp did cut into development time on the sp. This despite Sony SM saying there were 2 teams involved. The quality was still there just not in as quite a big of a package.
Yeah no more prequals. The story needs to move forward at this point.
Yeah, GoW needs a fresh new start with a new protagonist and a new theme. There's only so much they can do with the current theme, which is probably why they've started with the prequels instead, and there are so many other interesting mythologies to discover, I'd love to see them tackle egyptian mythology…
New protag would be godlike and necessary.
yeah i think your right in saying that it would be alot easier to go with a new setting than a whole new main character definately
happy gaming
Personally I would start from scratch, new character, new mythology (norse would be amazing) and new gameplay. I would like to see more technical style of combat or at least go the vein of Batman/Shadow of Mordor. I think Kratos and Greek mythology have had their run let's move on to something new for this generation.
No Kratos, no God of War. His story isn't done. All the Gods haven't been slayed. Their offspring haven't been slayed.
Kratos has the perfect personality for a Greek God of War. His energy causes a maddening experience. His skill break the strongest of the Gods.
I'd say keep it going. There's absolutely nothing wrong with building on the lore of Gods and rewriting the history, at least the diversity, of it.
I think that Kratos is, for better or worse, synonymous with God of War. And if you read between the lines during that recent charity speed run Sony Santa Monica did, it sure sounds like he will be the star of future games in the series.
I hope they do take a cue from Solid Snake — the character has evolved tremendously from the first Metal Gear to MGS 5, taking on tons of depth and nuance that did not really exist in the early days. That's what I want from Kratos: enough with the violent sociopath schtick. Make him more relatable. Let Kratos grow into a better character.
Some people won't like it, but I think many more would love for him to become someone much less one-dimensional. He was actually much more sympathetic in God of War 1 and 2 than he was in 3. I'd settle for that!
1. A worthy warrior seeks out Kratos to remove his title as God of War either by revenge of just because.
2. Kratos sends word that he no longer wishes to be the God of War and seeks a succesor and gives tasks of destroying Gods of other mythologies or other enemies of Kratos. Chaos ensues.
3 Kratos has a Son who becomes his succesor by bloodline or as most other Gods by killing his own father!
4. Descendants of Kratos find out they have his chaotic bloodline and the lineage of a God and take mesures to bring Chaos upon the worls once more. Thia can take place in any age. Even millenia from the original series. Decendants of Kratos. Decendants of Chaos.
4. Kratos brother Deimos somehow feels scorned by Kratos and seeks to dethrown him by becoming endowed with Godly power somehow. We can call this entry GODS OF WAR!
Just a few ideas ive been tossing around. Sont still hasnt gotten back to me yet though. 😉
It needs to just let it go already.
I love God of War but franchises that make a point of ending their story need to stay done.
