Forget This Final Fantasy Nonsense: Bring Back Suikoden

Final Fantasy will always be my favorite RPG franchise of all time.

But as I have little to no interest in Final Fantasy XV or the Final Fantasy VII Remake (which will undoubtedly be another Square Enix debacle in my mind), I'd rather not think about the demise of a once legendary series.

I'd much rather consider the possibility of seeing another Suikoden . I know it seems unlikely right now, and I know it was never super popular outside of Japan. Even so, I always say it's my second-favorite role-playing IP in existence, primarily because of the great stories and excellent gameplay. Yes, it was turn-based but as we saw in Suikoden III , they implemented a system where characters could still move between turns. A nice hybrid RPG system, updated to look and feel modern, would work perfectly for a new Suikoden .

And honestly, I'd love to see those 108 Stars of Destiny return. I was ripped off with that comically silly ending for getting all 108 in the original game, but I've done it several times now and I still enjoy it. Never managed it in Suikoden II , though (and yes, I own a mint condition copy of that game). With the right developer and mindset, a new installment for PlayStation 4 could be downright fantastic, don't you think?

Suikoden Revival Keeps Building, Invites You To Suikoden Day

Suikoden needs to come back, and an increasingly large group of fans is working to make sure it happens.

If you haven't heard of the Suikoden Revival Movement and you're a JRPG fan, it's time to get caught up.

First, check out their Facebook page , which currently has nearly 26k likes and remains quite active. Second, make sure to visit their official website , where you will find all sorts of information. This includes "Suikoden Day;" as a description, here's a message for the franchise faithful:

"The Suikoden Day community invites all fans of Suikoden to join its year celebration. Suikoden Day 2015 shall be November 10 – 16 (16 being the main culminating event). They aim to bring together fans of the the franchise through various contests, games, discussions, and debates. In 2014, the event racked up around 3,700 attendees. Now on it's 5th year, Suikoden Day 2015 is planned to be the biggest one yet in celebration of Suikoden's 20th anniversary."

If this isn't proof enough that a new Suikoden would make a lot of people happy, well… Konami needs to recognize!

Rumor Mill: FFXII HD, New Suikoden, Xenosaga HD, More

JRPG fans might get excited…

Industry insider Verendus, well known at the NeoGAF forums, has been dropping some very intriguing hints. For example, he's teased a brand new Suikoden , which would make all long-time JRPG aficionados cheer (even though it's "very far off").

But that was just the beginning; Verendus dropped a boatload of hints , many of which we haven't heard before. If even a small percentage are true, we could be looking at some very big news in 2015. There's the possibility of a Xenosaga HD Collection , Final Fantasy XII HD is "basically confirmed at this point," a new Virtua Fighter is in the works, and an unnamed IP "coming to PlayStation exclusively from Sega." No idea what that might be…

Anyway, here's hoping this isn't just a whole lot of hot air.

Suikoden Revival: Help Resurrect A Beloved RPG Classic

When role-playing fanatics talk about the history of the genre, many will put Final Fantasy at the top of the franchise list. And rightfully so.

But for a lot of us, only one acclaimed series can be runner-up, and that's Suikoden , which debuted on the original PlayStation fifteen years ago and reached Suikoden V on the PS2 last generation. Since that time, however, along with the general decline and falling off of the niche genre this generation, we haven't seen a new installment for consoles.

And we may never again. Chances are, if Konami ever opts to bring it back, it'll be on a portable or mobile device, because such games aren't seen as full-budget productions anymore. But that doesn't mean the fans can't try. Case in point: The Suikoden Revival Facebook page, where the loyal followers are trying to remind Konami that yeah, they still exist, and yeah, they'd be more interested in a new Suikoden than another Call of Duty or even Final Fantasy . So step up and support the cause, and maybe your voice will be heard…

New Suikoden Entry Headed To PSP

It's becoming clearer with every passing day: if you want a traditional role-playing experience, you probably have to turn to portable gaming.

Well, that's assuming the new Suikoden for the PSP will stick with the standard turn-based formula. Konami has finally revealed the next Suikoden installment , which holds the Japanese name Genso Suikoden: Tsumugareshi Hyakunen no Toki; click through the link to find the game's website. Also, they've released a teaser trailer for the upcoming RPG, which is in Japanese but gives you a look at some expected anime cinematography. No gameplay, though.
