The Samurai Showdown at E3 2018

Ghost of Tsushima

Now that the dust has finally settled on E3 for another year,  we’ve had some time to digest some truly fantastic game reveals. Some we may or may not see this console generation. We’re now into the final stretch with some developers already teasing what’s to come next-gen. At the very least we can probably expect a few of them to be cross-gen titles.

Naughty Dog brought the goods in a big way with the astonishingly good looking The Last of Us 2. Cyberpunk 2077 made an appearance and had behind closed doors game-play that wow’d all lucky enough to experience it. We had the usual suspects from Call of Duty to Assassins Creed and we got the lowdown on what to expect from Fallout 76.

But what got me most excited this E3 wasn’t Battle Royale coming to Battlefield V or Black Ops 4, or that depending on your console of choice; what extra missions you’ll receive locked behind some exclusivity clause. No, for me personally, the three big games came in the form of samurai games Nioh 2, Sekiro : Shadows Die Twice, and Ghosts of Tsushima that really got me chomping at the bit.

Samurai games are nothing new, the Playstation store is not short of titles to choose from (I’d like to take this time to recommend the excellent Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun) and every year we’ll get some variation of Samurai Warriors or last years excellent souls-like Nioh. So why should we be excited about these new games?

Nioh 2

Admittingly we don’t know too many details as of yet regarding the sequel to one of 2017’s best newcomers. What we do know comes from the director of the first game, Fumihiko Yasuda, who spoke at Playstation Live From E3. He said that Nioh 2 would be a “proper evolution” to it’s predecessor. The biggest change we know of is that there will be character customization where players can choose their gender and race, so we may not see the main protagonist, William, make a  return. The game will however keep its difficulty. Team Ninja will release a free demo similar to the first game where they can gather player feedback. Creative director Tom Lee states that this time around “The gloves are off and they’re going in hard.”

Sekiro : Shadows Die Twice

The soul reason (not a typo, pun intended) we should be excited about Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is that it comes from developers From Software and Demon/Dark Souls/Bloodborne director Hidetaka Miyazaki. Unlike the Souls/Bloodborne games, Sekiro will not have a multiplayer component making it a purely single-player experience. It will have a resurrection mechanic but is not considered part of the Soulsborne series. In an interview with Gamespot, Miyazaki claims that depending on a players play-style, Sekiro is “probably even more challenging than previous From games.”

Ghost of Tsushima

Sony exclusive, Ghost of Tsushima, was arguably one of the most beautiful looking games at E3 2018. So much so that some questioned if it was even running on a current-gen console. Sucker Punch, better known for their Infamous series and Sly Cooper, are the developers behind this one. The game revolves around main protagonist and samurai, Jin Sakai, and is loosely based on the first Mongol invasion of Japan, set on the island of Tsushima. The game will be open-world and players will be able to explore with no way-points to guide them. Exploration will be done on horseback or for harder to reach places, with use of a grappling hook. From what we can see in the trailer, the game looks to take a lot of inspiration from the classic samurai movies by Akira Kurosawa .

As of writing, none of these games have been given a release date yet, with only Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice promised in early 2019.

Do you agree or disagree that we should be excited about any of the above games? Do you think we’ll see any of them on current consoles or should we expect to see them go cross-gen? What games excited you the most from this year’s E3? Sound off in the comments below!

Sony Announces Four Games to Expect at the E3 Showcase

E3

The PlayStation has been churning out hit after hit this year and it doesn’t show signs of stopping. Games like the co-op “A Way Out” come to mind, “Far Cry 5” and the astonishingly popular “God of War”. As E3 creeps ever closer, we are assured by Sony that we will not be disappointed in the showings for their upcoming games. Even if you can’t make it to E3, it will also be streamed across Twitch, YouTube, Facebook, and of course live.playstation.com. The Sony E3 showcase starts June 11 at 6:00 PM Pacific Time.

The Last of Us Part 2

Four games were announced on their blog post along with their E3 Showcase time. The games in the lineup include The Last of Us Part II from Naughty Dog, Ghost of Tsushima from Sucker Punch, Marvel’s Spider-Man from Insomniac Games, and Death Stranding from Kojima Productions.

They will also have other announcements from indie devs as well as non-PlayStation affiliated ones. This event is massive for everyone. Hopefully, Sony will continue to pump out increasingly better games as the year moves on. Once again, the stream will start June 11 at 6 PM Pacific Time.

As always, we’ll keep you updated as the story progresses.

Sucker Punch Spider-Man Game May Be Real

Remember that fake box art for an inFamous collection on PS4?

Well there was another for Sucker Punch and a Spider-man game, which quickly took the wind out of the sails of the possibility of the best superhero game makers doing a great superhero game for spidey. This is something that Activision has been a little challenged at.

Well there's more life in the story. If you saw Spidey in Captain America Civil War as I did (awe-some!) then you know the ownership of the character has been crossing hands so why not in the video game world as well?

Gamepur reported that a motion capture artist, Stephen Oyoung, listed working on an "untitled PS4 Spider-man project" before quickly removing it from his list of credits. They also said that Sony had acquired the Spider-man rights in a deal that included some horse trading including some Call of Duty goodies.

What does this mean? Well, on the face of it, it could mean Spidey is going exclusive. But, as we can all tell at this point in this particular console war anybody who is anybody has a PS4. And if you dont, the unitard may be a reason to make the change.

Sucker Punch Will Be Sticking With Open World Structure

So, what's Sucker Punch working on?

The inFamous developer hasn't spilled the beans just yet, but we get a few hints by checking out the open positions at the studio.

As spotted by DualShockers , the team needs a Narrative Writer and they want someone with "experience in playing open world games."

This wouldn't be too surprising, as the inFamous adventures have always been sandbox titles. And of course, they could just be talking about the next entry in the popular franchise, but we've heard they're working on a brand new IP. This is the kind of thing that should excite PlayStation 4 owners because Sucker Punch is an extremely talented team with lots to offer.

Hopefully, we'll learn more about this new project in 2015.

inFamous Developer Suffers Layoffs

Unfortunate news for one of our favorite developers.

As IGN reports, inFamous: Second Son developer Sucker Punch Productions has suffered a round of layoffs.

Sony Computer Entertainment America confirmed "a reduction in workforce" at the studio, which includes employees who have worked on both the acclaimed inFamous and Sly Cooper franchises. We don't know how many people lost their jobs but regardless of the number, it's still bad news. Sucker Punch is wholly owned by Sony and their most recent project was Second Son , which launched in March for the PlayStation 4. They're currently working on the game's first expansion, First Light, which is set to arrive on August 26.

Sucker Punch was founded in 1997. Let's hope they stick around for a while longer.

inFamous: Second Son Lead Designer Quits…But Why?

Mere days before his game is to hit store shelves, the inFamous: Second Son lead designer checks out.

Jaime Griesemer, lead designer at Sucker Punch productions, has revealed that he has left the studio. He made the announcement on Twitter , adding that he's not prepared to discuss details just yet.

"I'm excited for people to get their hands on it. And yes, I have left [Sucker Punch]. Not really talking about it yet, tho."

Before joining the Sucker Punch team in 2011, Griesemer worked with Bungie for 12 years. He worked on all the Halo titles as well as the upcoming Destiny when it was in its early stages. Obviously, he was an important part of the Second Son development process, so it's kind of odd that he's leaving a few days before the game releases. Well, at least he says he's "excited" for people to play it.

Onward and upward for Griesemer? Or was there another reason for his leaving…?
