Spider-Man 2 Preview

Scheduled release date:
3/15/2005

Fans of Spider-Man are in for a treat, because not only does anyone who buys one of the first million PSP's receive a UMD of Spider-Man 2 the movie, but there's an all-new game coming out at launch as well. Vicarious Visions, who recently worked on Crash Nitro Kart and Shark Tales is developing the title, and it looks like they are poised to bring all the action from the movie to the PSP.

Spider-Man 2 will follow the basic movie plot, and it will culminate with a battle against the evil Doc. Ock, but there are plenty of other bad guys to fight while you try to protect Manhattan. Mysterio, Rhino, Shocker and Vulture are just a few of the Rogue's Gallery of villains that will try their hand at taking down Spidey.

The game will feature 19 original levels, and will actually play like a cross between the last two Spider-Man console games. There are 3D levels where Spidey will have to swing around the city trying to defuse a bomb, and other levels that are viewed from a sideways perspective, like one that takes place with Spider-Man brawling atop a moving train.

All of the web-slinging moves that you'd expect to be in the game are here, like wall crawling, web yanking and capture webbing, but Spider-Man 2 PSP brings a host of new moves to the handheld as well, such as the "cocoon," "web net" and "heavy web ball." These new moves will be a part of the combo system that promises to make combat more rewarding than in previous games.

Spider-Man 2 will feature several fully 3D environments that are some of the most impressive the PSP has seen to date. The game will have a variety of locations, each one with a unique look and a visual standard that won't disappoint just because it's on a handheld.

The game will have full voice-acting, and Tobey Maguire will provide the voice of Spider-Man himself. The game will feature familiar themes from the movie soundtrack which was scored by the legendary Danny Elfman, of Batman, The Simpsons, and Mission Impossible fame.

It looks like combining the strengths of the previous two games is going to work out well for the latest game in the Spider-Man Franchise. The game is rated T for "Teen" and will be available as early as March 15th. Check back for our review of the game shortly.
