In addition to shipping 10 million systems, 19.6 million units of software, covering 183 titles have become available worldwide as of September, 2005. In one of life's bigger mysteries, Sony has shipped 15 million UMD units as of September 2005, so even though I don't know a soul who owns a movie other than SpiderMan, someone must be buying them.
