Sony Stopping PSN Support For PSP

If you still play the PSP online, we've got some bad news.

Sony has announced that it will cease PlayStation Network support for the original PSP on September 15. That's next week, you know.

This will occur via server switch-off as opposed to a firmware release, so there's no way for anyone to avoid the end. This is a big step toward finishing off Sony's first handheld gaming portable, as it nears the end of its relatively impressive nine-year run. The PSP Go basically failed and unfortunately, the Vita isn't faring much better these days, but here's hoping Sony sticks with the latter.

As for the news in question, it means the PSP simply won't work with anything involving the PSN. Of course, gamers can just log into the SEN web store and download games to the PSP; nothin' stopping them from doing that. But as far as playing games online, well…that's over.

I feel the opposite, I am still content with my PSP for portable gaming the Vita has yet to entice me. Final Fantasy Type-0 would have been enough to reel me in but S-E have failed that miserably.

Vita should have been compatible with the PSP, including a UMD drive. That might, perhaps, under an optimistic moon have prolonged its life.

Awwww – a sad day. This was a fine little bugger, a tiny hero on many a travel pre-smartphone era.

I never played any games online on my PSPS anyway, I think I had a brief go at MGS: Portable Ops – but it was awful. I can't say I will miss the PSP being online, but I still have my UMD's so I do play it from time to time but the only real reason I ever had the console was because of Crisis Core.

A scavenger hunt on December 25th 2005 unearthed a PSP for each one of my 3 children as well as one for myself. Happy times.I'll miss the Portable Play Station. Well… I still have mine so not really.

Vita is serving me well for now. I anticipate a change in the Vita situation come 2015 and beyond.
