Atlus To Distribute Strat/RPG Gungnir In North America

Remember that mystery game Atlus teased last week?

Our best guess was Gungnir , a strategy/RPG for the PSP and lo and behold, that's exactly what it is: today, Atlus USA has announced that it has acquired the publishing rights for Gungnir , and the game will release exclusively on the PSP on June 12, 2012 in North America.

From the makers of Yggdra Union and Knights in the Nightmare comes a new adventure "where the impoverished battle for survival" and the Resistance must fight free from the grip of their oppressors. Offering "fresh twists on an expertly honed formula," Gungnir builds on the traditional action queue of turn-based strategy RPGs. Faster actions bear smaller numbers, which allows them to execute faster than slower preexisting attacks, and players will even be able to sacrifice tactical points in order to accelerate certain actions.

It definitely sounds like catnip for those who love games like Disgaea . Also, make sure to check out the title's official site .

YES. Late-gen RPGs are the high point of any console's lifespan. I'm a bit disappointed at not getting a new Valkyrie Profile and no news on FFXV, but Gungnir looks pretty awesome – and it might be based on Nordic myths too, judging by the name. Sure hope so.

I'd also love to see a new Valkyrie Profile. Tri-Ace battle systems are soooo good. I would also like a new Shadow Hearts. Judgment Ring FTW!!

Oh wait…

It's for a handheld?

My anticipation rate dropped significantly. I just went from OMG AN SRPG EXCLUSIVE TO SONY!!!!!!! to "oh mm kay, an srpg for PSP."

Look, I love my PSP and all… and I get lots of enjoyment out of it… but I definitely do NOT spend anything other than short periods of time on it… Lets face it… when I have a choice… I want to sit in front of the big screen with my surround sound. Not in my kitchen… or bedroom… or whatever with a couple earbuds on.

This is good news, a pity it's for PSP though. Even so, it seems that this generation at least we in the west have to really thank companies like NISA, Atlus and devs like Level 5 for supporting us with their JRPG output.

I spend a lot of time on my PSP. The library is massive, and I plan on not getting a Vita until I've fleshed that out – and I'm still working on my GBA collection too. Even when I run out of RPGs, there's Ace Combat and OutRun. Yes. Besides, it's a late-gen game and the devs really know the hardware by now. I want to see what they can pull off 🙂

Oh…I was hoping a PS3 game since I got no more time for handhelds… oh well

The REAL question here is:

Will this game be GOOD? If so, I'll add it to my Play Queue.
