We knew the game had broken day-one sales records but how about the five-day record?
Today, Activision has announced that Treyarch's Call of Duty: Black Ops has broken theatrical box office, book and video game sales records for the five-day worldwide sell-through in dollars. The new record is now $650 million, which does indeed outstrip last year's record-setter by Infinity Ward, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 , which raked in $550 million in the first five days. Black Ops has been warmly received by critics, despite the game suffering from a few technical issues at launch. Said Activision Blizzard CEO, Robert Kotick:
"Call of Duty has become the first entertainment property in history to set five-day launch records for two consecutive years across all forms of entertainment. The title’s success illustrates the mass appeal of interactive entertainment as millions of consumers are choosing to play Call of Duty: Black Ops at unprecedented levels rather than engage in other forms of media. The number of people playing online and the number of hours they are playing demonstrates how online gaming has become a mainstream form of entertainment and certainly validates Activision Blizzard’s leadership role in online entertainment."
Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said the primary reason for the huge sales tally is simple: "Treyarch delivered a truly awesome game, and in the process have established themselves as one of the most talented developers in the world." There's little doubt that Black Ops will continue to be popular throughout the holiday season, and you can expect all the hoopla to start afresh about this time next year…when we wouldn't be surprised to see Modern Warfare 3 .

Ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous numbers. Now Activision will be insufferable, and other game producers will want games of other genre to mimic this performance or be declared a failure.
KOS-MOS go away…?
Aww…
And who's that?
Highlander, you better tell me who is that as your new avatar OR FACE THE WRATH OF OTAKUMAN!!
It's a cute, pretty, anime maid….called May. I added it in reference to all the controversy about Aya in her maid outfit (Parasite Eve). Worry not, KOS-MOS is ever near and will return (probably today now that folks have noticed the change…).

After some googling…….Hand Maid May?
Looks interesting……..
I thought it was from a game…maybe the Atelier series.
Isn't she from Xenosaga, at least that's what I remember that picture from, from the back of the OPM with Kingdom Hearts 2 on the cover.
Hand Maid May – Correct.
Funnily enough (make of this what you will), but she is voiced (English) by the same voice actress as Shion in Xenosaga. The characters also share a similar appearance – brownish hair, side braid and green eyes. So she does look a lot like Shion would in a maid uniform.
Sometime I'll have to pull together an avatar of Shion and May for a comparison. LOL!
Kossy will return this evening.

Damn, I want that $100 million left over gap.
Gran turismo 5 is gonna kick its ass 😛
critics might have liked it but amazons user reviews have given it the lowest rated cod for a few years
No, sadly, GT5 will not. Quality and popularity aren't even relevant, really, because GT5 is only available on one platform.
Gran Turismo 5 will kick their ass…………in spirit!
360 numbers aren't relevant. It'll be interesting to see how GT5 sells in comparison to just the PS3 numbers for the COD's and GTA IV. I'm pretty sure GT5 will outsell all other PS3 exclusives, seeing as how none have broken the 5 million mark.
Unfortunately, I believe Ben is right. The only way GT5 would beat out Call of Duty is if over half of the PS3 owners bought a copy.
Maybe we should start a tally…
I'm 1.
2.
Trois.
4
Woohoo! That's 4, we only need 19,999,996 more!
5.
6 and 7.
8, for the living room. 9 for the Man Den.
10
11th
Gonna burn the road!
I say we need an exclusive fps for this gen. I think kojima should give it a try.
Exclusive FPS…?
Resistance
Killzone
You asked, they already answered.
Yea KNG, where have you been?
It's ust the same thing with some different maps and guns yet it makes a bazillion dollars….
I was gonna get one and due to shortage, I was unable to get a copy from my seller and I had to wait for a week.
With all the review and also the bugs and glitches, also together with the fact that it's the same engine, hell no I'm buying this game.
Cancelled my order and got DMC4 and Castlevania instead.
There was a time when I would have been proud to see these numbers, but that was years ago when I was very young and naive. Despite what some reviewers and MW2 fans say this is one of the best CoD games ever made, even better then Modern warfare. This is really the first CoD where they actually tried to get you to think about the plot and care more about whats going on rather then just shooting people without thinking. Of all the CoD games Ive bought, this one is one of them that I don't feel that Ive kinda wasted my money like I felt with MW and MW2.
Hopefully Infintyward will learn from this and implement some of these elements in MW3.
record,history,unbeatable.
…and?
Killa, you fail because your a CoD fanboy. Lame.
..and? You forgot overated.
Baaaaaaaa!
Once again, our quantitive natures trump the qualitive ones.
It will NEVER outsell Super Mario Bros.
What happened to all the MW2 haters that said they were done with the series? Looks like they came back for more and brought a few friends with them…..and this despite Treyarch being the lesser of the COD developers.
Hypocrites!
hmm… wonder how the growth in sales compares to the overall sales over the past year of systems?
They still left the series, but since MW2 released about ten gajillion children became old enough to purchase big boy games.
Proud to say I'm not part of the kotex hype.
Since I'm not into the MP modes, I'll just buy COD:BO somewhere down the pipeline, but only used & cheap(probably mid-year 2011).
And once again, anti-vision will continue to get a big fat zilch from me.
That is an inaccurate generalization. I contested my dislike of COD, and did not buy Black Ops. If MW3 looks interesting, I might consider it. However, if it looks Black Ops I won't even look at it.
I really don't feel that it deserves this title. COD4 was where it went mainstream because COD4 was awesome, COD3 had 11 guns….
Ever since they have only introduced 4 big new features. The rest is slowly improving graphics which will never beat KZ3 or let alone Halo.
I have to say Black Ops online will always be fun because of the accesibility ><
Halo isn't that great either. The game has looked the same since 3. Jaggies galore!
They should remaster COD: UO, that game was one of the best COD.
I am somewhat ashamed to be a part of the "Record Setting Sales" not only does any CoD not deserve this solely because CoD's are essentially the same game with a few new perks, weapons, characters, and settings, it shows how casual gamers are defining the industry in a certain franchises ridiculous popularity. It is very sad to see other titles that offer true innovation and yet struggle to hit a few million units sold.
lol, I love your helghast thumbs down avatar.
I never noticed he was thumbing down Halo! funny!.
BeezleDrop – You buy CoD and then complain about the sales numbers?? What kind of nonsense is that?
Or are you bashing CoD just to be cool on PSXE?
@Alienage
Do you try to make enemies as some sort of sociopathic hobby? Even if people are quote-unquote hypocritical in your -opinion-, why do you even care?
As a matter of fact Alienage,
I don't do anything to be "cool" this is how I really feel about the game and I chose to voice my opinion. Not a crime, the way I see it I am ashamed because the games reviews are the lowest I have seen for a recent CoD and it really just doesn't deserve this success. In no way does Kotick deserve any more money for any reason what-so-ever.
