Insomniac Won’t Do Ratchet HD, But It’s Not Impossible

Okay, so we have the God of War Collection , and high-definition overhauls of Sly Cooper , ICO and Shadow of the Colossus should also be headed our way at some point.

What other PS2 classics should receive the HD treatment for this generation? Well, don't count on Insomniac delivering HD remakes of old Ratchet and Clank titles: according to what the developer said on its Twitter page , they currently have no plans to do it. Still, that doesn't mean it's entirely out of the question as they say that while they "won't make it" they'd still "support Sony" if they decided to give Ratchet fans an upgraded version of a PS2 hit. Perhaps Sanzaru Games, which is handling the HD reissuing of Sly Cooper , could take on the job. But even if they don't, those who very much enjoyed the PS2 last generation have a laundry list of games they'd love to see again in high-definition; among them, Final Fantasy X and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty . Personally, I think they should start distributing some of those PS2 games – as they are – on the PSN for downloading; we've got the PS1 classics, so how's about upping the ante with a newer generation…?

After all, the PS3 is no longer backwards compatible and old-school gaming is routinely brought into the limelight over and over with PS1 classics and PSN originals, so…why not?

They'd have to release ps2 classics at a faster pace.

They've taken so long to release many of the great ps1 games

And they still don't have Tomba, Chrono Cross, Blasto, Klonoa, Rival Schools, and other great rpgs in there.

I hope Ratchet gets the HD treatment. They released so many Ratchet games that it was hard to keep up with them. Hopefully a HD collection comes out for those who couldn't collect them all.

Considering how good R&C already look on the PS2, I think most gamers would simply be happy to have the R&C collection ported to the PS3, even if there was no resolution lift.

They should do a Ratchet Clank collection, but considering we have 2.5 Ratchet and Clank games already released on PS3, I don't think it should be the first priority in PS2 collection rerelease.

God of War 3 was coming soon back then, so they had to make God of War 1 & 2 to refresh our memories of the great franchise. They will probably do the same for Last Guardian with Ico. Then Twisted Metal. Then for Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

God of War Collection sold over 1.3 million according to VGchartz. That's practically lifetime sales for many new games, so there's definitely a market there for PS2 Collection releases.

I missed PS2 era and refused to get PS3 BC because it will look "horrible" in SD. I am REALLY excited over this. Let's just hope they don't release one PS2 collection every E3.

Well the PS3 still does have that PSone/PS2 Data Creation Utility for making virtual memory cards. I'd think they would change it to just PSone if they didn't have some plan involving the PS2 title out there.

putting ps2 games on the network would be difficult based on size of the games. They should offer a option to download ps2 games to a disk that would work in any ps3 if that's possible.

Burning PS2 games on discs will just promote piracy. The PS2 Collection is the best solution, to making more money for Sony and enhance our experience of the PS2 age.

If they can upload inFamous to PSN for people to download, I'm sure the PS2 titles would be a cinch.

Though I wouldn't want PSN to be our only option. I like my physical media. We already got the God of War collection on disc. We should get any new ones on disc too.

I hope so anyway.

I agree jawknee, it should at least be an option. If I had the choice, I'd buy it on disc, not because of hardware restrictions, I just happen to like my case, disc, and booklet trio.

I agree Kraygen. Give me my physical media, and I'll be happy.

Lame. These would be ideal to remake.

I really hope we see a MGS2 and 3 HD remakes as well as Final Fantasy X and XII.

We already know ICO and Shadow of the Colossus is coming.

I think Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 would look nice too in HD. They have always featured nice colors.

ooooooooh! DragonQuest VIII? YES PLEASE!

As for PSN distribution? That's cool as long as there is a hard copy too.

Eh, I can live without remakes of 10 and 12, I mean jeez, if they're going to make a remake of a ff game at least pick one of the best =P 6-9 haha

Tard, It's the fact that they are not making HD updates is what's lame. Not R&C. I like R&C.

@LegendaryWolfeh, i agree those should be remade too but for simple HD updates, I'd rather see X, and XII. They would need to completely remake those other Final Fantasy's with a new PS3 engine.

i swear to god if sony dont do a R&C collection i am going to sue them.
nah, though i wish they would assign a studio and make this their only job.
remaking ps2 games, and if possible even better ps1 games!
i dont see why they would not want to do this, besides licensing issues may be a issue but most the games they would do it for they published so there should be no problem.

there much cheaper to redo than new games, they take much less time GOWC only took six months!
and last but not least it takes the least amount of resources so you dont need a large studio to do it, taking them away from other projects.

i would kill to be able to play J&D, crash bandicoot, R&C, DMC, PoP, MGS, FF, ape escape in HD with trophy support!

speak of the devil, what happened to ape escape ps3 at E3?
sony Jappan tweeted a few weeks before E3 that they were going to be showing off the first gameplay footage at E3.
if that game does not release here than im sorry but the world is going to end!
ape escape is one of my all time favorite series! and one of the very few series still exclusive to playstation from the birth of playstation.
ape escape, syphon filter, twisted metal are the best series ever created!

Hmm, how does Syphon Filter plays?

I played a bit of Ape Escape but never really got into it.

And I wouldn't sue Sony if they don't remake some of the best games for PS and PS2, I'd just throw some tomatoes at the HQ.

nah screw the tomatoes go for rotten eggs 😉

syphon filters allot like splinter cell except its not a stealth game and you have heaps of gadgets to play around with.
my favorite is a portable taser, you even get lots of types of ammo.
for your rifle you get gas grenades which knock out enemies, EMP rounds to take out electrical devices, explosive rounds you name it!

if you have a PSP you MUST! buy logans shadow, by far the best PSP game!
also you must buy the original syphon filter off the PSN store its a ps1 classic.
such a great game, so far ahead of its time!

i loved ape escape its such a good game.
depends on which one you played the 2nd one i think it was sucked!
cant remember which one i played first but that was by far my favorite!
apparently there are currently 2 ape escape games being made for the ps3, about bloody time if you ask me!

now all i need is my crash bandicoot remake, and a new syphon filter game and im set!

I really want more of these collections because I missed out on a lot of games, due to me getting into gaming later than normal. I haven't played a lot of the big name favorite rpgs that ppl talk about all the time and I want to, but I'd be more likely to run out and buy them if they were on a HD collection.

Like ICO and shadow of the colossus, d1p from me, if they did kingdom hearts 1 & 2, same thing. I want to play them, I'd love to play them in HD.

A bit off topic, but as the forums don't work for me, I'm going to say it anyway. My PS3's run out of memory, any ideas for cheap hard-drives? (UK retailers)

I was close to ordering a Hitachi 250GB for 36 quid, on Amazon. But when I deleted all the installs for games I've traded in, I recouped a lot of space.

Amazon. And if your going to get a new HDD, you may as well spend a little extra and go big.

500gb big.

Fane1024

One warning: the PS3 will occasionally not recognize certain large HDDs, for instance my 500 Gb Seagate. It's not a deal breaker, but it can be a PITA. Other models do seem to work fine, but I would recommend a 320 Gb HDD.

Fane,

Some newer large capacity drives use a different type of low level format. It may be that the PS3 is not recognizing that. Some of the even newer large capacity drives still use the new lowlevel format, but provide an emulation of the older low level format type for compatibility. Basically the industry is shifting to 4096 byte sectors instead of 512. The reason for this that as disc capacity increases they are reaching the limits of what can be put on a disc. So they need to get more efficient. Using 4096 bytes per sector enables more efficient use of the physical disc surface, and also the longer sector allows stronger error checking despite proportionately fewer bytes used for error checking. The problem you may be having is that some of these new drives are formatted with the new low level Advanced format.

The PS3 doesn't appear to have the ability to read the new Advanced Format. I would imagine that Sony will ultimately modify the firmware in the PS3 to recognize the new Advanced format.

However, in the mean time there are drives that can emulate the old 512 byte sector format, and these should work in the PS3. You need to look carefully at the drive information to make sure that it supports the older 512byte sector size.

Sony should buy Bluepoint Games and have that be their only job; Giving PS2 classics HD makeovers. They did a great job with the GOW Collection. Next they could do: ICO and SOTC, MGS 2&3, DMC 1-3, KH 1-2, FF(X, X-2, XII), The GTAs, SF Alpha Anthology, SF III Third Strike, Capcom vs Snk 2, Soul Calibur 3, Tekken Tag Tournament, and last but not least, a s**t load of some of those Japan-only games. (I know the last one is just wishful thinking on my part, but the others are full well possible with permission from the publishers of course)

Is it true that Insomniac is going multi-plat on their next game? That sends shivers down my spine. The source is on Kotaku. Their ratchet/clank story.

It's true. It' also pretty old news.

They said they will still support the PS3 and I'm sure any new Resistance and Ratchet games will remain exclusive.

Its just a new IP they are bringing to the Xbox. I honestly don't expect much from it.

The insomniac deal covers one (brand new) game for now, their other major games on the PS3 remain on the PS3 exclusively.
