PSXE Poll Update: Gran Turismo 6 Really Isn’t For Everyone

Driving simulators don't do it for everyone. In fact, if you're not a confirmed car nut, you probably aren't interested at all.

It isn't all that surprising to learn that according to our recent poll, the majority of our readers won't be getting Gran Turismo 6 . "It's just not my thing," most said. A fair amount said they grabbed it on day one, though.

Despite lower-than-anticipated review scores, we say GT6 remains an excellent and challenging simulator . If you'd like to think that blend of simulation and arcade racing we see in Forza is somehow uber-realistic, you go right ahead. GT6 is for confirmed racing enthusiasts and that's that. If you don't know anything about the sport in question, chances are, you're not going to be intrigued in the slightest. And you really wouldn't be in any position to evaluate the game.

This week, we start the voting for the PSXE Reader's Choice pick for Game of the Year 2013. We've selected 10 titles (if you don't see your favorite on there, just don't vote) and the top 5 vote-getters will move on to the final week of voting. Whichever game comes out on top during that second round will be the winner. Who ya got?

DmC!!!! Nah it was a fantastic game but I gotta go for Bioshock Infinite. The Last of Us could be biggest letdown though. 😉

I think you have a problem. No way in hell can you look at me with a straight face and tell me that TLOU is a big letdown.

Just for me and in my wee little opinion. If it makes you feel any better I kept my review almost completely technical to keep my disappointment out of it, so I did score it highly.

My GoTY is easily The Last of Us. It was more of a complete package than any other game this year by far. Not only that but it far excelled in every area.

But nonetheless there were some great games like Bioshock that were more to people's tastes. And thats great company. However I have to go with the one I enjoyed the most on top of which the one that as stated above excelled in every way a game could.

Also I must add that AC4 definitely is probably number two. I get that people are tired of the games, but the do continually improve and AC4 although another AC title certainly is more accomplished. They made this game fun for once. They have always been good but in my honest opinion were a chore. Not anymore I've gotten to enjoy the game like I had hoped I would with the very first AC. On top of which its super solid on the PS4, it runs and looks great. I just feel like it's kind of dropping off the radar a little and it shouldn't. I typically don't stick up for these games often either because as good as they are their faults are prominent.

You can tell I'm starting to turn into a Jap freak with googly eyes because I have not played a single game on the poll list… wow.

I do have Tearaway though and will play that and DmC (PS+) sometime this month. I've also owned Bioshock Infinite and GoW: Ascension but sold them after I got a new PS3 bundle.

Next year I'll eventually get GTA5 as my last game and if a nice racing wheel comes out/goes down in price before that I'll snag GT6

I'm sad GT6 took so long and ended up coming out for the ps3 and not the ps4. It's ok though, there's the Crew, Drive Club, and Need for Speed to make me forget about GT.

I'm guessing by the time GT7 comes out very few people will care. Another great game that is torn down by its own ego.

I really want to say DMC. I had high expectations of that game, and Ninja Theory managed to hit them, but I just don't think that it's GotY material. Bioshock Infinite had a really good story, but it was too damn shootery. Seriously, back up with the enemies, Irrational, it's clearly NOT what you really want to offer. GTA V was good, but I think the lustre of the series has worn off for me. I loved my first few hours in Los Santos, but I haven't felt the pangs to go back yet, even though I do intend to do just that come the Christmas break. The rest are all valid contenders (except maybe Blacklist, but I haven't played it so I don't want to disparage it too much), but I think my vote here has to go to The Last of Us. It was such a well rounded package that, although there were some things that I'm not so sure were good decisions in retrospect, it gets the nod from me in this list.

I'm still torn between TLoU and Gone Home for what deserves it the most though…

I agree about Infinite going too far with the enemies. They need to scale that stuff back so enemies are to be feared again instead of fodder.

I really love GTA V but after finally playing The Last of Us last week there's really no competition. TLoU isn't only game of the year, its in the running for (my personal) game of the generation. Right now its about #3 on my favorite ps3 games.

Sad Ni no Kuni wasn't even a choice, that game is a 9+ easily for me.

GTA V was a magnificent technical accomplishment (let's see if any PC with 256 MB of system memory and 256 MB of video memory could pull that off) that was immensely fun to play in both SP and MP modes. As amazing as that game was, no game has given me pause and reflection (even six-months after it came out) like The Last of Us has. In my mind, pretty graphics, intense game-play and a haunting soundtrack are all secondary to the story that ND tried to tell. The fact that all that was in a new IP is a tremendous, tremendous accomplishment for a video game developer.

quite the opposite actually, car nuts are the exact problem here.
just because your a car nut does not mean you find it enjoyable to go around the same boring bit of grey stuff 100 times a hour, 5 hours a week, for 6 months!
kinda gets a LITTLE boring!
car nuts are the exact reason why games like forza and NFS shift did so much better, they offer so much more than just driving around boring sterile tracks!
i wish GT would realize that, realize car nuts want more than going around in circles 100000 times a month just so they can shave off that extra tenth of a second.

i had to go for blacklist, simply because i love stealth games, we dont get anywhere near enough stealth games, and its been a long long LONG time since we had a half decent one!
that, and no ones going to vote for it.
no its definitely not the best GOTY, thats GTAV, but voting for that just seems kinda wrong.
people constantly whine and moan that this industry is so copy and paste driven, it never dives into the unknown just for the sake of it, it never looks at itself and says how can i improve?
they whine about getting the same ol same ol, but when the time comes to put their money where their mouth lies, its back to square one.
as cliffy b said, haters will hate all the way to the cash register!
what a man SAYS he wants, and what he actually wants, are two VERY different things!
exactly why i gotta vote for blacklist, not only is it a kick a$$ game, and a kick a$$ stealth game at that, but its also a game not afraid to live in a genre which is hardly GTAV milti billion dollar selling.
kinda makes me worried, seeing ubisoft promote the game at the EB expo not by putting it in the show floor, but in the fast food area.
seriously?
if they ditch this series because it does not sell well enough, all i can say is thats a VERY regrettable decision!
killing off the best 3D platformer ever, PoP, was bad enough!

I've played GT6 for a couple of hours now and I'm really enjoying it. Looks like it's going to keep me entertained for a good fistful of months, mixed in with the other couple of titles I'm playing right now.

I got TLOU for £20 and I've got to the point I've just met Ellie. I'm enjoying it but I just know I'll get to the end at around 10 hours and probably not touch it again.
The intro piece of gameplay before you jump to the present was really well done.

Ni No Kuni is sleeper hit of the year no doubt about that but it's GTA V for me. The writing just keeps getting better and better with these Rockstar games. Sam Houser is a flipping genius.

Unfortunately, Gran Turismo can be a boring game to play if you're just racing against the A.I.

I found the only time I had fun was when I was challenging my time with others on GTPlanet.org (a fan website). Y'know, learning techniques from others, shaving some 10ths of a second, learning the nuances of the car/track combination. This is awesome but why is it not integrated into the game in any way?

Why on earth Gran Turismo 5 didn't have leaderboards I'll never know – it would've made it an infinitely better game. I immensly enjoyed it in GT5P where it would pop up where you stack up against everyone else in the world, and how far you were off the best time by downloading his/her ghost car, and compare the split timers. "15,883th? Damn… maybe I should put my foot down round that last corner and risk it all; I stay close with the ghost until then…"

And from that I could really appreciate the game more. GT5 didn't allow me to do that. Is GT6 any different? Leaderboards for every car/track combination?

You can compare your times against your Friends, if that's what you mean.

And I don't need others to learn. I like to learn on my own; I don't want people telling me how to do things. The entire point of a simulator is to learn those nuances of the tracks and cars; having others around to share it with doesn't mean anything to me.

That being said, you can always race multiplayer if you want.

In addition to what Ben said there are seasonal events where your time trial lap is ranked to people all over the world.

From my experience in GT5 people play like savages and do all types of unprofessional things to screw you over if you're winning the race. I much rather learn all by myself.

I would say it's somewhat sad that I've only played GT6 and GTA5 from the list but I only play on the weekends. I'm way too tired during the weekdays to play anything. The games that I've enjoyed the most this year has been
GTA5, GT6 and Ni No Kuni.

Ni No Kuni was a pleasant surprise. I do plan to play TLoU, Bioshock and AC4 sometime next summer.

There are two types of people in this world, those who "get" The Last of Us and those who don't; fortunately, those who don't are a small minority.

I suck. I haven't played any of those games. Well. I did get DmC from Gamefly for a few days, got a few hours in and said "have at you!" and back it went.

oh well.

I played the Tearaway demo.
My guess, if I had actually played all of those games, it would be between The Last of Us and Tearaway. I'm guessing TLoU.

Gran Turismo isn't doing anything significant to the industry these days. Neither is Splinter Cell, other than it being more in depth, or Assassin's Creed. GTAV is more of what everyone wants from a criminal open world game. Once again. Not much of a game changer just more feeding of the open world appetite.
I suppose there's Bioshock. Can't say I feel much of a draw to play it. Never had. Maybe some day.

and to the credit of Naughty Dog. They could've sat on their hands and pumped out another Uncharted. Instead, they risked a new ip launched way in late in the gen. An ip featuring a father and daughter in a setting not all that common in gaming. It's also a long game, so I read, complete with a solid multiplayer element, so I read. It was a ballsy game in an environment trending away from linear design, significant story telling, and a campaign that lasts over 10 hours.

For the record, Splinter Cell: Blacklist was a fantastic return to form in my estimation. I know Conviction didn't score badly but I thought it sucked, and Blacklist was what I'd call the spiritual successor to Chaos Theory. Double Agent, which came between, was good, but not as good as CT.

There's something to be said for a franchise that recovers itself.
