During its first year of existence, there were some who said the system was "doomed."
Now, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. has announced that overall sales of the PlayStation 3 have reached the milestone of 80 million units worldwide as of November 2, 2013. Currently in its 7th year, the console continues to grow.
Furthermore, Sony says the PS3 keeps gaining "strong support" from third-party developers and publishers. To date, the cumulative number of software titles released for the PS3 worldwide has hit 4,332, and this includes a slew of critically acclaimed exclusive games, such as The Last Of Us (3.4 million units in less than 3 weeks). More than 300 more titles are expected to be released from third-party companies this holiday season. We'll also see the latest entry in the esteemed Gran Turismo franchise, which has sold over 70 million copies.
The PlayStation Network now operates in 59 countries and holds more than 150 million registered accounts. The PlayStation Store offers over 222,000 digital content options and that ever-expanding catalog will continue to grow in the new generation. Yes, the PS3 ended up doing quite well, but it probably won't be able to catch its predecessor, which sold nearly double that 80 million number. Still, it took a good 11 or 12 years for the PS2 to reach that lofty total, so…
That is superb and still going. How much did the PS2 sell worldwide, 150 million?
She will crack the hundred million mark within 10 years easy!
Yeah, I expect a decent price drop announced next year, and I can see it reaching 100 million, but it'll never sell PS2 numbers.
As long as it outsells the 360 in lifetime sales, I'll be a happy camper. 🙂
May not have sold nearly as many as the previous generation, but the PS3 is the #1 selling HD gaming console in the world.
I'm beginning to wonder just how close the PS3 might get to the Wii in the end. Wii is now discontinued everywhere except North America, while PS3 is still putting up impressive numbers globally. We know from the past that PlayStation consoles remain in concurrent zombie action for years after their replacements arrive. Actually topping 100 mill might be questionable, since the sales would have to keep up pretty hard for that, but maybe 90?
Might be interesting to see what proportion of the PS2's sales came after the PS3's debut. PS3 will still have to sell 25% of it's current sales to match the Wii's current total.
Long, Live, Play.
well its gud to see the ps3 still going strong i know i've still got a stack of ps3 games to get along with the ps4 and ps vita games on my list
happy gaming =)
People were saying the ps3 was doomed in its 2nd year too and beyond, a bit like how some are still going on about the psv.
But that's ok, i mean the psv has no games right, or no future… Lol.
Oh, wait it does.
