GameStop Staffing Up For Holiday Rush

It's gonna be a very big holiday season for GameStop, and they're starting to prep.

The mega video game retailer intends to hire around 17,000 people in the US to assist with the insanity of the upcoming few months, which includes the launch of two new consoles, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

They're looking for Game Advisors, consumer electronic technicians (in the company's refurbishment operation center in Texas) and warehouse personnel for their two distribution centers. Bear in mind that these will be seasonal positions, and successful candidates will work part-time shifts on weekdays, weeknights and weekends. And of course, one of the fringe benefits is a 15% employee discount. Here's a statement from the company:

"In the weeks leading up to the holidays, GameStop experiences a substantial peak in the number of customers it services online and within its retail stores. As a result, ensuring that there is an adequate number of talented Game Advisor staff to support this increase in store traffic is a priority in order to maintain the high quality of customer service shoppers expect from GameStop."

Unsurprisingly, the holiday season is by far the busiest time of the year for GameStop, as the period between October and December typically accounts for 40% of overall annual revenue. If you'd like to apply for an open position, visit the company's career website .

Ah yes, I remember working the holidays at Electronics Boutique. I also remember several system launches; they were the only reason working there was worth it. That's because you'd get commission on every warranty sold; 20%, to be exact. So, if you could convince the consumer to purchase a 2-year $50 warranty, that's $10 in your pocket. Do that maybe 40 or 50 times during launch day because everyone is there for the same reason, and your paycheck was way higher than it would be normally.

The good ol' days. 😉

Yeah exactly, I applied back in 2010. I filled out that "knowledge of video games, consoles, and media" to where it was going over the borders. Instead of hiring me, they hired some guy who had trouble counting $2.34 cents of change. Knowledge = nothing when applying at Gamestop. Just pretend to be a super nerd with gelled hair and your in.

I hate that. One time i went into a Best Buy went next to the electronics area where the PS3 was (and the layout of the store was really weird) so i asked the girl who was working there "Do you have any Trittons?" she replied " What are those?" I'm like…. looked around for it myself and eventually found them.

I actually just had an interview a few weeks back and found out I got a job as a sales rep at my local GameStop. The discount will definitely be nice going into this holiday season 🙂

From personal experience, I'd actually say working at GameStop during the holidays is great. Just have to ring people out, don't have to deal with the bs of forcing pre-orders and subscriptions on people who don't want them and you get a discount.
