GameStop Announces In-Store PS5 Bundle Event

gamestop

Scalpers are going to be hard-pressed to get these PS5s as GameStop has announced an in-store PS5 bundle event. Of course, this is only at select locations across Atlanta, Dallas-Ft. Worth, and New York City. This event follows Best Buy’s recent in-store sale, which saw droves of people flocking to select locations hoping to nab a console.

The reintroduction to in-store sales is a good thing for gamers as the pandemic has hampered major retailers from selling the console in-store. Not to mention the chip shortage and other problems the pandemic has caused, making it rather difficult for even major retailers to maintain a good stock for more than a day or even a few hours. Because of this, the best way to get yourself a unit was by ways of the internet, however, fans found it difficult to compete with scalpers swooping in to buy the stock in order to resell them for a much higher price.

The GameStop PS5 bundle event is gearing to start up on September 30.

EB Games To Rebrand As GameStop In Canada By End Of 2021

EB Games

In 2005, GameStop acquired the EB Games for over a billion. As it stands, the subsidiary mostly stands tall outside of the US in countries such as Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Of the three, however, Canada trumps them all by sheer mass with around 4,000 locations as opposed to the 300 locations in Australia and 40 in New Zealand.

Now, however, the game retailer is pushing a rebranding to its subsidiary in Canada. The move has already hit social media as its Twitter has been scrapped for parts to simply redirect to GameStop Canada‘s.

This move will mean that much of the differences that made EB Games stand out will be stamped out in place of GameStop’s practices. It’s also kind of confusing to many outsiders as they claim it to be spurred on by customer feedback and its investors. This choice comes as GameStop continues to struggle to keep up with competition as digital sales continue to rise.

Interestingly, both Australia and New Zealand EB Games locations are not taking on this change.

GameStop To Refuse Cyberpunk 2077 Refunds, Redirects Customers To CDPR

Cyberpunk 2077

There is no way around it – the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 (Read our Rundown here) is a huge mess. From game-breaking glitches to seizure-inducing sequences, CD Projekt RED certainly had the right idea by acknowledging and telling people it’d get better. With that message, though, the studio also noted fans could request a refund if they don’t want to wait for the game to be patched properly.

In and of itself, this rocked a ton of boats as digital and physical retailers were affected. Obviously, this includes one of the largest chains, GameStop. Well, according to a report from VICE Games, the retail chain is instructing its associates to direct unsatisfied customers back to CDPR, according to an internal memo.

“CDP will issue a patch on 12/21 that should be a major fix to address customers’ concerns about Cyberpunk 2077. If customers are still unhappy and want to return their product, they should be directed to send an email to:

he**********@cd**********.com

for reimbursement directions and refunds issued directly from CDP.”

This supposed patch for the 21 also lines up with the last day to contact CD Projekt RED for a refund.

This isn’t the first snag fans ran into when seeking out a refund. PlayStation fans had to complain about jumping through the hurdle of its download policy. That said, it ended with the game completely pulled from the Store for the time being and refunds issued to all the unsatisfied customers.

What do you think? Are you holding onto hope it’ll improve or just looking to get a refund? Tell us below!

GameStop Boss: Disc-Based Games Are Here To Stay

Many gaming executives, including Microsoft's Robbie Bach , believe the next generation of consoles won't support physical media.

But some industry bosses believe digital and physical will continue to coexist. GameStop chief executive Paul Raines is one of those people, as he informed Fortune in a new interview.

In fact, he thinks discs will continue on forever:

"Disc-based games will be around forever. The market has seen physical music sales down 50% from its peak and physical movie sales down 60% from its peak, but even in a doomsday scenario, disc-based games will be around for a long time.

I see a complimentary business where we sell discs plus download like the current console mode. Virtual reality games will also likely follow this model."

Of course, GameStop will need to increase its digital business and they've taken strides in that direction. Thanks to the sale of DLC and download codes (among other things), the retailer has "a pretty healthy digital business," according to Raines. In fact, GameStop expects to earn over $1 billion in that area this year; in the past year, it grew 11 percent.

Well, let's hope discs stick around. Real collectors will still need them. By the way, if you need some work this holiday season, GameStop is hiring 28,000 temporary employees .

GameStop’s “Supercharged PS4” May Be, Uh, Overpriced

Don't have nearly enough space on your standard 500GB PlayStation 4 hard drive? Aren't interested in switching out the HDD yourself?

Well, maybe you're up for paying a premium for one of GameStop's Supercharged PS4s .

As spotted by DualShockers , these systems are from the retailer's "premium refurbished" lineup and they're "supercharged" because they come with a 2 terabyte hard drive built in. The cost is $479.99, though, which means you're paying $120 for that hard drive and the simple installation. You can find some 2TB HDDs for about $100 so maybe this isn't really worth it for most. Then again, maybe some aren't even aware of the current going rates for hard drives.

Besides, let's not forget the "refurbished" part. That will always cause me to hesitate, no matter what they're offering. And this doesn't seem like much of a deal to me in the first place.
