DICE is well-known for their esteemed Battlefield franchise. Last year's Battlefield 3 was certainly one of the year's best.
And while you can definitely expect more series installments in the future, the developer has plans involving other projects. That's good news, considering the last full game they created that didn't have "Battlefield" in the title was 2008's Mirror's Edge .
DICE general manager Karl-Magnus Troedsson told Joystiq that the team has an "ongoing plan" to step outside the Battlefield boundaries and expand a bit:
"We also have an ongoing plan that those products should not only be Battlefield…though I cannot say more than that."
It isn't that DICE hasn't been busy; they've created the Frostbite 2.0 engine EA apparently wants to use in just about every product they've got coming out in the near future, and the team also assisted with Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit . But you know, we're really hoping they do a long-awaited sequel to Mirror's Edge . It sold over a million copies and had a great foundation…hopefully, that's what Troedsson is talking about.
I eagerly await what new IP they're up to doing.
But just make sure that you also get an upcoming Battlefield: Bad Company 3 made too.
I'm with ya there Ben, we need Mirrors Edge 2 to happen. One of my favourite games this gen.
Glad to hear they want to keep it fresh. Would be good if they could finally get their online infrastructure to be top-notch first though – they still aren't as good in terms of server choice/reliability as what SOCOM had on PS2, or KZ2 had on PS3.
I freakin' hope it's Mirrors Edge 2. First one was awesome but could have been so much more and with frostbite 2.0 it would be slick.
