GameStop Enjoys 5% Holiday Rise To Over $3 Billion

Well, GameStop certainly had a happy holiday.

The retailer has announced their numbers for the nine-week period that ended on December 31, and they saw a 5% year-over-year increase; $3.02 billion up from $2.86 billion.

New software sales spiked, rising 9.9% above the 2010 take. Hot titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 , The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim , and Assassin's Creed: Revelations led the charge, although GameStop CEO Paul Raines dubbed software sales for the Wii as "weak." Used game sales were up, too, rising 3.5% and up 7% year-to-date.

On the downside, hardware sales fell 19.6%, although it probably isn't surprising due to no new hardware. And GameStop added that the price points still aren't low enough to "stimulate consumer demand" so in other words, most people who wanted a gaming console already had one heading into the holiday season. And by the way, the biggest growth for the period came in the retailer's digital sales department, which rose a whopping 60%. …Call of Duty Elite subscriptions had a lot to do with that.

Not surprising, it was an amazing year for video games.

And I know most my friends only get there games from gamestop just for the preorder bonuses…

No way, I don't buy games from gamestop. Never really can be trusted that much.

I stopped buying from them once they took out those cards in deus ex.

They didn't offer an optional refund, just a account credit that suckered you into buying more stuff from their place

I cannot support a company that makes the industry worst to get rid of competition instead of doing something better to win against competition.

Good for you.

Off topic for the moment, but does anyone else find it hilarious (and not surprising) that IGN released a wishlist today of developers they wished were on XBOX. It's pretty much all Sony's 1st party Devs. HA!!!

Well the article was call "Five Sony devs we wish worked on Xbox 360" so what you expect Nintendo developers?

I..errr…ummm… yeah, my bad. I'll look a LITTLE bit closer before making a comment like that again. For whatever reason, I had it in my head that the article was entitled "Our Wishlist". Open mouth; insert foot. I still think it's great that they don't have a wishlist like that in the reverse.

I don't like buying games from Gamestop. I did however get MW3 at the midnight release. Also, I like their FFXIII-2 bonus. I haven't decided if I am going to go for it though. I have to wait see if KMart will have any good $20-$30 gaming coupons.

Gamestop 'COULD' have reported higher earnings, but I chose not to spend my hard earned $$ with them. They completely lost my business this year and for the years to come because of their complete disregard to customer service and customer relations. All future gaming purchases will occur through gamefly, amazon, best buy or COSTCO.

Haven't bought anything from GameStop in a long time.

Amazon is the way to go, nice $10 credit pre-order bonuses and really quick price drops on new games.

Guess I'll have to go there to get Xenoblade Chronicles when it comes out in April, though.

I stopped purchasing games from gamestop a bit ago sick of their trade in and lack of knowledge and fanboysum for certain consoles.
I have been getting my game from Bestbuy or Micro play

given that the usual difference between the used game price is and the amount they buy it back, the amount they got wasnt that impressive. still goes to show that people just dont mind getting ripped off by gamestop.
