Kojima “Personally Chose” Platinum For Revengeance

We got the official press release for The Last Of Us hours after the game blew everyone away at the Spike TV Video Game Awards. That was cool.

We had to wait a little longer for the Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance press release, but it's finally here. And it might help to quell the rising controversy and skepticism.

Konami Digital Entertainment and Platinum Games will indeed produce the renamed action game; specifically, the Kojima team handled the story and managed the cut-scenes and voice performances, and Metal Gear Solid veteran artist Yoji Shinkawa created the character designs. In fact, to learn more about the behind-the-scenes project, be sure to check out a special documentary piece at the MGS official site . It'll air today at 5:00 p.m. PST.

For the record, Hideo Kojima "personally chose" Platinum Games, and another MGS veteran, Yuji Korekado, has been tasked with overseeing the project. Kojima will be the executive producer. And yes, it's true, a decision was made at some point to make the game "a more action-oriented title" than what was previously planned. The press release says the project was "subtly" re-branded to reflect that change (the dropping of the "Solid" from the title and the "Revengeance" part).

Here's the game's description from the press release:

"Raiden is armed with a High Frequency katana blade which he uses to cut through anything that stands in his way. The three-minute trailer shows Raiden’s incredible level of power and control as he cuts through enemies and various obstacles alike using high-speed combination attacks, and using free-running skills to bypass groups of adversaries to give him a strategic advantage and catch them off-guard. As the game progresses, Raiden’s physical prowess is increasingly called upon and tested, with huge enemies appearing that require specific tactics to disable."

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance will launch for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but there is no estimated release date for the time being.

And if that doesn't cheer MGS fans up maybe this will:

http://www.vg247.com/2011/12/13/non-rising-fans-should-patiently-wait-for-stealth-based-mgs-sequel-says-kojima/

I hope its the PW sequel Kojima said he would do.

I probably buy this hoping for the best, yet expecting the worst.

Hopefully then I can't be disappointed.

Great choice, them can make a game that fits well Cyber Raiden.

Btw I don't get the hate, Platinum games are great and this give Kojima more time to work on something that isn't Raiden related.

Yes, it says "Metal Gear" in title, and I understand that.I could understand the frustration over this game if we witnessing this type of transformation with Snake.

But it's not, so everyone should relax. 🙂

if kojima was after money then mgs4 is multiplatform a long time ago. this has konami written all over this.

Just saw a tweet confirming Kojima will definitely make a proper MGS sequel at some point, and that this is just a spinoff, ala Metal Gear Acid. So just relax everyone, this detour is not the future direction of the series 🙂

I think its pretty clear to everyone now that this game is just a spinoff. I don't think anyone is actually worried that this will be the sign of future Metal Gear Solid games. I mean for one, Kojima himself is not even really a part of it. It must just be Konami wanting some extra income.

Personally, I never really expected much stealth in this game, but the original project looked more promising than the current one, especially on how much smoother it ran. Either way, game looks overkill, more so on Platinum's version. There's no game like it, I don't think.

This conflicts with what Konami said earlier. They said Platinum asked for it. In other words they approached Konami and not the other way around. Oh well…

Just kinda sucks they couldn't complete the original project.

I guess Platinum games is the way to go if they wanted to make the game more action-oriented. I mean wow… how does it get more action packed than that? Hope the game will somehow look better or run smoother in the final version. A game as fast as this would be sweet at 60fps.

From the trailer, it looks like a lot of the gameplay wasn't really real-time in terms of what you can control though. I mean do we really get to freely control on how we run, jump, and throw? That's what I want to know. I'm guessing it'll be similar to Bayonetta. In the original game, we could literally cut whatever, how we want, which I thought was pretty bada**.

I agree with you, I really like this..and last trailer makes the new DMC look like crap.

I absolutely loved bayonetta, so i'm sure i will really enjoy Rising.

However i wish kojima pro could've went with their original concept for the game, the story sounded way more interesting, and i was really looking forward to the hunter stealth gameplay.

Sorry Kojima, I tried not to be skeptical, but compared to the E3 2010 trailer, it looks worse.
Even the graphic seems to have suffered.

Someone likened this to giving a Cohen brothers script to Michael Bay.

I agree. lol

Here's a good explanation right from Konami of what was going on with RISING:

I appreciate them taking the time and effort to explain. It still doesn't really negate that fact that the game looks worse now. In the very least they should have stuck with the FOXengine and just enlisted Platinums help where they needed it most.

Hello Ben, you might get to read this or you may not but I just want to say that from your previous article on Uncharted 4 being on the ps4 article. That I completely understand now, thanks! Thanks for explaining to me what those kind of articles are posted for. Now I know, and please I meant no offense by it. I'll remember that now that these articles are for a community and also news.

In Metal gear Solid related news….

Metal Gear Solid's New Site Tracks Series History

http://www.industrygamers.com/news/metal-gear-solids-new-site-tracks-series-history/

Konami has rolled out a new website at http://www.metalgearsolid.com for fans of the Metal Gear Solid series all around the world. The site prominently feature a new “first-of-its-kind interactive game universe.”

The site features a layer of exploration, that allows users to explore the two century timeline of the universe, including pivotal events, characters, and storylines. Users can also submit their own memories of the series, and can even upload their own photos and videos.

Users can also use their Facebook account or a Twitter handle to socially promote elements of the site and they can "Like," Tweet, or Google +1 their content or the content of others.

It's a smart move by Konami to leverage its fans. Metal Gear Solid is a brand and an IP that has global appeal and Konami has to take advantage.

I think rising will be a great title. Scepticism exists because of the association the game has to the "Metal Gear" franchise but it must be borne in mind that clearly this game is an IP on its own. A spin-off? Yes! But it is nontheless its own game and not a rip-off. I think people should get to grips with and maybe then they will actually enjoy the game. If that 'cut-at-will' concept was in a 'true' MGS title, we'd all have gone bananas. Give the maker a chance to prove themselves. The fact that Kojima-san has some involvement should be comforting enough regards how great this game will be. I +1 this and I look forward to playing this game.

i am excited about Kojima's idea to have The Boss and the Cobra Unit involved in Normandy in MGS5, that will be an awesome awesome idea. Raidan's a boring character from the start, I don't care much, but good that Kojima and Platinum is collaborating well.
