PSXE Poll Update: VGAs Didn’t Go Over Too Badly With Gamers

There was a time when the Spike TV Video Game Awards were kind of a joke. Most hardcore gamers didn't pay them any attention.

But as the years have progressed, the awards seem to have become more accurate in the eyes of the ardent fans. As for this last year's show, which resulted in The Walking Dead taking home Game of the Year honors, the fans seem mostly satisfied with the results.

According to our latest poll, the majority of readers said at least some of the awards seemed correct in their eyes, although a fair portion said the awards weren't even close. Perhaps in future years, more progress will be made, although I have a tough time arguing with the majority of the nominees and winners. This week, we want to know what you think of 2012's last big release, Far Cry 3 . Is it indeed one of the year's best, as so many critics have proclaimed? Or are you disappointed in the result? Let us know.

So Seriously, Why Did The Walking Dead Win Game Of The Year?

I suppose one could call it a huge upset, but I wouldn't know. This is a legitimate question and I'm hoping some of our readers familiar with the game can enlighten me:

Why did The Walking Dead win Game of the Year at the Spike TV Video Game Awards?

That's really all I want to know. We did not review the game here at PSXE, for which I must now greatly apologize to our readers; the voucher code came at a very busy time, and I just didn't get to it. Had I known just how great it was supposed to be, I would've moved it up the priority list. And to this day, I have yet to play the game in question.

So from what I hear, there are some similarities to one of my favorite titles of the generation, Heavy Rain . If that's the case, I'll most definitely have to download The Walking Dead , although I find it difficult to believe that the same level of depth (via player choice and storytelling) is included. Beyond that, though, what makes this downloadable title superior to the other candidates ( Journey , Assassin's Creed III , Halo 4 , Dishonored )? With the exception of Halo 4 (which I'm sure is great; we just don't cover it), that looks a lot like the Game of the Year nominee list we'll sport in a few weeks time. No big surprises, really.

I'm just a little shocked. Not only would I never have anticipated seeing The Walking Dead as a GotY nominee, I wouldn't have guessed in a million years that it would actually win. I guess my biggest question is- How many people out there agree? I suppose one could just go, "Meh, it's just the Spike TV VGAs; that's all you need to know." But that doesn't seem fair, as the list of nominees seemed pretty accurate to me. I guess I'm just more out of the loop than I had thought…

Spike VGAs: The Walking Dead Wins Big, Journey Takes Three

It was another fun, entertaining night, capped by what may have been a surprise Game of the Year winner.

The Spike TV 2012 Video Game Awards are complete and the awards have been handed out. Telltale Studios had quite the showing, taking home Studio of the Year while their popular and well-received downloadable title, The Walking Dead: The Game , landed Game of the Year. It also won Best Downloadable Game.

Personally, I think the latter should've gone to Journey , but at least Thatgamecompany's masterpiece brought home three awards: Best Independent Game, Best PS3 Game, and Best Original Score. And considering that composer Austin Wintory has earned a Grammy nomination for Journey , Best Original Score should've been a given, yes? Halo 4 nabbed two awards (Best Xbox 360 Game, Best Graphics), and Borderlands 2 won Best Shooter and Best Multiplayer Game. Half-Life 2 was revealed as the Entertainment Weekly and Spike VGA Best Game of the Decade…which I don't agree with even slightly, but that's okay.

Feel free to check out the full list of winners . So what do you think of the awards this year?

Bioshock Infinite, Rainbow Six: Patriots Make Waves At VGAs

In addition to The Last Of Us (undoubtedly the biggest news of the night), a few more games generated plenty of discussion in gaming communities.

For our money, two trailers piqued our interest- the first is the fresh atmospheric video for Bioshock Infinite . Although it doesn't show us much of anything new, it's easily one of our most anticipated titles of 2012; Irrational Games and Ken Levine are gonna produce an absolute gem. The atmosphere is always second-to-none in this series, and above all else, this trailer drives that point home.

The second trailer is for Rainbow Six: Patriots , which isn't due until 2013. But if they get this one right, it's going to have a gigantic impact, and it won't be due to the gameplay. No, this one is going to cause a stir among many circles outside of the gaming industry, as you can gather from this video. It's actually a little frightening.

We figured we'd give you guys the chance to discuss both trailers here. We might try and add the Comment function to the videos we post up every week; generate conversation that way. We know people have asked for it before, but I've been pretty busy. Looking into those t-shirts right now. 🙂
