Just Add Water Offers To Create The MGS Remake For Kojima

A few days ago, we learned that Hideo Kojima is seeking an outside studio to work on a new Metal Gear Solid remake .

The idea is that a talented team would utilize Kojima's next-gen Fox Engine to create a re-imagining of the PlayStation classic. Well, somebody has already volunteered for the job: It's Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD developer Just Add Water.

In an open letter addressed to the MGS guru himself, the studio explains why they're "ideally positioned" to deliver the goods. Here's their list of reasons why:

"1: We have experience working with legendary IP (Oddworld Inhabitants) and treating the subject matter with the respect it deserves.

2: Many members of our team are huge Metal Gear fans, with very good knowledge of the source material.

3: We really, really want to do it."

Just Add Water is also working on a remake of the original Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee , which was recently unveiled and entitled, Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty . They also want to make it clear that they're not just pulling a prank; they're sincere in the offer and they "eagerly await" a response from Kojima-san. So, what do you think? Good fit?

Kojima: Metal Gear Solid Was “Made For A Certain Era”

The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is fantastic, but it doesn't feature a high-definition remake of the original classic.

And that's because it would have to be entirely rebuilt and redone (the primary reason why you just won't see high-def overhauls for PS1 games). Franchise creator Hideo Kojima says part of him wants to deliver what the fans desire, but the other part is more of a realist and recognizes the significant generational and technological gap.

In speaking to OPM UK , Kojima first said that as a producer, he'd want to answer the calls of the die-hard fans who want a remake of the original title. But at the same time, it would have to be redesigned from the ground up; the only thing that would remain the same would be the story. And as for the rest of the production-

"If you bring the gameplay up to modern standards, then you lose a bit of the original game. It was a game made for a certain era – not just the story, but the controls and everything about it reflect that era in which the game was made."

In an action-based game like MGS, we fully understand that sentiment. But does it apply to everything? Everyone is always pining for a Final Fantasy VII remake, for instance; would that require a control and mechanical overhaul? MGS certainly would but might modern-day RPG fans really despise the slower turn-based style? That's a whole other can of worms, but you can see the contrast…

Kojima Productions Hints At Possibility Of MGS Remake

Everyone wants a Final Fantasy VII remake. But a Metal Gear Solid remake would be almost as good, right?

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater will be featured in the upcoming Metal Gear Solid HD Collection , but Kojima Productions couldn't include the original title simply because it was too outdated. That doesn't mean we won't ever see the first MGS in high definition, though. Creative producer Yoshikazu Matsuhana told Eurogamer that they initially planned to include it so the collection would be complete, but the old classic just "has a very, very low polygon count." Added Matsuhana:

"While at the time the game was something new and refreshing, just bringing it as is into HD probably wouldn't have that much meaning to us. We're doing two and three with a certain work flow where the goal is to take that game, preserve it and introduce it to a new generation. We can't really take that approach with Metal Gear Solid 1 because it's very dated at this point."

He says that the studio hopes to deliver MGS HD at some point, but they'll have to "give it some special attention above and beyond a new HD lick of paint." This may include tweaking some of the gameplay (uh-oh) and the story so the update would be "proper." Unfortunately, it just isn't a project they can undertake right now.

Well, we can live with the "might happen" scenario.
