Christopher D. AndersonIt seems like we’re starting to get a lot of colors for our handy dandy dualshock 4’s here recently. Earlier last month they released the Crystal controllers which have a see through front plate and comes in three colors. Coming up are two more options that are rather interesting, a mini Dualshock 4 for kids and the Sunset Orange. It looks like there are a couple more interesting new options coming on the horizon (see what I did there? Okay, I’ll stop).
First is the mini controller and, frankly, I’m not sure how well this thing is going to do. It has some good ideas going for it but it’s not going to be for everyone. It’s 40% smaller then the Dualshock 4 and is flat. This means there is no vibration and the touchpad has been replaced by a smaller button. While there is no touch pad, there are actions you can do with the sticks to replicate some of the actions that can be done on it. To top it all off it’s actually a wired controller. That is a bit of a downer for me.

As a fan of older games I have plenty of systems with wired controllers. I’m used to wires. My kids on the other hand have had wireless controllers for most, if not all, of their lives. They don’t understand that a controller can be tethered to the console. I see many yanked plugs and Playstations pulled off entertainment stands in the future. I’ve already seen it happen with my older systems. I even forget about it when I play older games sometimes.
I suppose the reason for it is because they had to remove some of the guts to make it a small form factor. And granted, the cord is a 10 foot cord so there is some leeway but I’m not sure it’s worth the risk. It’s a cool idea but the cord is a bit questionable. Then again maybe I’m just being overly dramatic.
On the plus side, the controller is only $30. So it’s half the price for the half the controller and could possibly be a good alternative for children. The little guy is set to release sometime this holiday season. Probably just in time for Christmas.
More recently announced on the EU Playstation blog is the Sunset Orange Dualshock 4. This is probably one of the more interesting controllers to come around. It sports a nice orange color with some dark purple sticks and buttons. This is a good looking controller.
The announcement was made for the European market of however, except for certain countries. It’s not going to be available for U.K. and Ireland, France, Poland, Russia and Middle East and Africa. No word on a U.S. release either. The Sunset Orange controller is set to be released sometime next month.
Both of these controllers look like an interesting addition to the Playstation family. I’m really liking the look of the Sunset Orange. Hopefully we’ll see it in other countries soon. Although I still have my heart set on getting the 20th Anniversary. That one is really cool and nostalgic.

I think that kids should have to earn the right to play ps4. They should start off with nes and SNES so they can learn to appreciate gaming as it was back in our day. So that they can see games that were complete, before DLC and pay to progress. Games of quality and thought. But that's just me.
Fair enough. My kids have had some play time on my older systems but it's still easy to forget about cords.
Yah that's a good looking orange controller. I might snag me one. Although, the mini seems like a good idea, I don't think my 5 year old son would go for it. If it doesn't look like the controller daddy uses, then he won't have anything to do with it. Plus, I don't like it having to be wired either. I totally agree with your assessment LowKey! These kids just don't know what their missin'!
As somebody that was raised on the original Nintendo Entertainment System, I couldn't agree with you and LowKey more. Although I feel like kids of all ages should play on the gaming system most available to them, having them play on the NES, SNES, or even the original PlayStation, would be a fantastic way to introduce them to the world of gaming that we (as moderately mature adults) all grew up with.
If you guys are reading this, I really urge everyone here to visit and use our forums. We're trying to bring all of the old players back into action, and the forums are the perfect way to catch up.
