How Big Of A Deal Is Street Fighter V’s PS4 Exclusivity, Really?

Yes, we know: Street Fighter V is only coming to PlayStation 4 and PC.

This means Microsoft and Nintendo fans are out of luck, at least at first. Chances are, SFV will release as a "Game of the Year Edition" or some complete, definitive edition on the other consoles at some point. It's basically inevitable.

Even so, I suppose it's a boon for the PlayStation brand. I'm just wondering how big of a boon…I mean, yeah, it's Street Fighter . I understand that it's a legendary franchise; I still remember playing the epic SFII on the Super Nintendo way back when. I also realize that the fighting genre enjoyed a huge resurgence in the previous generation and this proved fighters are here to stay. For a while there, waning interest in the category prompted plenty of naysayers and doom-and-gloomers.

At the same time, I have to wonder at the significance of the news. It's not quite the same as when the Tomb Raider sequel was announced as an Xbox One exclusive, is it? And it's not the same as when Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid went multiplatform. We probably won't be talking about staggering sales for Street Fighter V (in relation to top-tier AAA productions like Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed ) and by then, more PS4 exclusives will be available. I'm just not sure if this is the world-ending sort of news Sony wanted to release. Seems underwhelming to me.

I don't know, though. Maybe fighting fanatics feel differently.

Infinitesimally small.

when I look at VGchartz and see that the original release of SFIV sold near 8 million units I don't that qualifies as infinitesimally small.

btw the same site shows that SF PS-side sold 4 million globally while 360 sold 2.8. This is a big advantage PS side for a platform that was sluggish at first where Xbox360 had a one year advantage.

and as a point of reference FFXIII from the same site is listed to have sold 5.2 million globally. So yes, SF is bigger than FF.

and to add to this, I don't buy it that Capcom was too poor and broke to make a new SF. Bullcrap.
Fighting games are cheaper to make than many modern games today and SF was like Capcom's only ip last gen that didn't suck that both sold amazing and received rave reviews.

Until Sony comes out of the shadows and tries to defend their image of not being like MS in marketing tactics, as far as I'm concerned Sony yanked this one away with a grip of cash.

EDIT: I mean seriously, "we're too poor" yah, when tiny little SNK can still pump out King of Fighters every few years for crying out loud Capcom can afford another SF.

Let's be clear, Temjin.

SFIV was bigger than FFXIII; that HARDLY means Street Fighter is the bigger franchise. I think lifetime FF sales are probably triple that of lifetime SF sales. Lifetime sales of FF in 2009 passed 80 million; Street Fighter isn't even at 35 million now.

yea, well, probably for lifetime, but that doesn't change the fact that SF is still a big, or was a big deal, last gen.

I don't know man. I heard a rumor about a story that went like this.
Setting. Sony finds Ono on a street side without work and begging for money.
Sony: "Ono? Can we help?"
Ono: "My fans want SFV but … as you can tell we can't afford it"
Sony: "Ono, tell Capcom we'll pay for SFV. So don't fear, you can work again, and have food"
Ono: "Th.. thank you Sony. But I can't make the game alone. I need help"
Sony: "Don't worry young Ono, we'll help you make your game."
Ono: "Sony, the savior of all that is good. I'm in your debt. From this day forward SF will always be yours"

If there was a poll here I'm sure most would rather have Tomb Raider over Street Fighter.A big story driven adventure game is just more appealing, to me at least.

Personally, I thought that this was HUGE news. I'm a big street fighter fan but I do get frustrated with Capcom's many many many many iterations.

That being said, I can't remember if it was Spencer who said it, but Microsoft wanted (more like desperately needed) to have something that was comparable to Sony's Uncharted. Hence, Tomb Raider timed exclusivity. Set to be Drake's nemesis in 2015.

PlayStation owners probably, or, more likely, would not be impacted too much by this and so timed exclusivity could be a stretched sort of strategic master plan, because maybe … it was brought to their attention that their direct competition would be ….

Blockbuster movies tend to shuffle around dates to avoid clashing with each other. This could have been a "Hey, we wouldn't have to directly go up against Uncharted and we can still make a few dollars with MS at the same time until we release our product several months later" moment.

Now with SFV, I thought that it would have absolutely devastating from a psychological perspective if it wasn't leaked (suspicious, if you ask me). The fighting game community is very passionate about SF. Having no knowledge beforehand, would have been killer on the day itself. In addition, you have to take into consideration how it will look during the several international competitions worldwide where the console of choice would have to be …. PlayStation.

Cornering niche markets is a smart move. Niche gamers are just a tiny bit more anal when it comes to their genre specific games. Having the most passionate fans can be beneficial.

Sony has expertly managed to cater to much more markets in a short space of time while leaving Microsoft to go after the masses (again) in a game of catch up that is an uphill battle. They are creating solid gaming foundations and bolstering their image of diverse gaming.

Sony has given itself a LOT of ammunition to play with in the marketing war to attract gamers. As Ben said, SFV is not probably going to break any sales records, but setting up a correlation between PS4 and competitive gaming. Hmmmm ….

I do not doubt the goodness of this news about SF V being exclusive to PS4. I do not, however, believe how underwhelming this 'mysterious reveal' turned out to be…

Ill always respect street fighter and it is an icon of video game culture. To me this news isn't as much about street fighter as it is the face of this console generation. What popular ip that everyone respects is going to be locked down next?
It's lame and I wish Sony had nothing to do with it.

Edit: and sure the majority of this community probably doesn't care but to fighting fans it's an uppercut to the balls.

This is the biggest news since MGS4 being exclusive to ps3.

Trust me, if you think SF doesn't drive console sales you're not familiar with the role fighting games play on a global basis.

Every winning console every generation has been synonymous with SF (except ps2).

SF is the leading fighter and fighting game fans are THE most passionate players you will find, I can attest to that.

Don't just think about NA/EU. Think about the global impact. In China, Japan, and other regions SF games are huge.

I will say I'm always jealous of how fast SF finds matches online. That's always an indicator of how popular something is. Whereas something like DOA5 can take a little while before a match can be found. SF is like lightning fast.

EDIT: and this was the case as of just a couple months ago when I last played it.

First of all, every huge fan on the planet will swear up and down that his particular group of fans is the "most passionate." I could easily make such a claim concerning JRPG fanatics, for example.

Secondly, as big as fighting games are, they just don't hold the same spotlight as some of the other franchises. They're considered more niche and hardcore, even today. Do they prompt system sales? Sure. Do they do anything for the overall visibility of that platform in the eyes of the mainstream public, which right now comprises over 80 percent of consumers in this industry? Nope.

Considering how large the fighting game fanbase is and how important SSF is to said fanbase is definitely big news. There are tournaments every year all over the country where people come in from all over the world and to do what? Play SSF.

Its a big deal.

I don't know… as this is being released on PC also it doesn't really feel like an exclusive to me still. Also, I guess the reason I am not excited is because there is bound to be an Ultra Edition a few years down the line, I am not falling for the same trick twice in buying a Street Fighter game in its first edition.

That's because you guys aren't the core competitive fighting game players they're doing it for, Vivi and co.

Those are not for you. It's everyone's choice to miss out editions. But it turn, they're not part of the growth, the learning experience and they will be left in the dust regarding skill level.

The bigger news is that this could just be the beginning of the exclusive rights deals for games between the two next gen systems: Xbox One and PS4. I recall when Rise of the Tomb Raider became exclusive to Xbox that PS4 fans went nuts because they were missing out, but people on this site specifically said that it was not about PS4 vs Xbox but more about this being bad for the industry. Well, since this Street Fighter deal, I do not see anything being written about "how bad it is for the industry" and why? because PS4 owners win for this one.

Bottom line and I said this before, Sony and Microsoft could care less about you; they only want your business and that is why they exist to make $$$$. Period. Only going to get worse.

I've played Street Fighter since the original one was released in arcades and Tomb Raider since it's release on PC/PlayStation. This generation will be the first time I do not play either franchise. Third party developers jobs are not to sell consoles, but to sell their games. I will not support any publisher that pulls this money hatting crap! And if this starts to become common place in the industry….I guess after 27 years of gaming, I'll be finding other ways to fill the little free time I currently have.

Pretty important I think. Sony doesn't have its own fighter. Nintendo has Smash and MS has Killer Instinct(snickers). XD

Sony needed a fighter. Why not one of the best known to gaming?

This news was/is huge. That's final. You're going to have new players on the PS brand thanks to this and that means they will more than likely buy other games to go along with their console. From what I've seen and been told by my friends who participate in tournaments, even though SF IV sold well on PS3, the preferred console was 360 due to latency. Now having SFV exclusive that means tournaments will use more than likely PS4 and that means those who participate in tournaments will want to practice their skills on the console. That means they'll have to buy a PS4 if they haven't yet. You no longer have to split the console market for a game that's exclusive all to yourself.

any time i have a conversation about video games with new people, street fighter 2 is mentioned almost every time. sf2 was an actual childhood game for most gamers imo, while i never liked the tomb raider series, my brother did as he didnt enjoy sf2 or any fighting games. so this a great tally mark for ps4

I believe Titanfall started this trend of 3rd party exclusives on this new generation, and SFV is just continuing the madness.

At this rate, sooner or later everyone here is going to have their favorite franchise do something ugly. It happened to me when Ace Combat made the shift to the 360, and needless to say I kept a 360 in my house for it.

I personally do not like it.

Of course it's a bid deal, the Street Fighter series is legendary. Street Fighter IV almost single-handedly brought back the resurgence of fighting games.

Look at how big EVO has gotten and how many viewers were watching EVO streams. There are a ton of casual players too so I wouldn't exactly consider it such a niche game or series.

I would consider Street Fighter mainstream and a fighting game like BazeBlue as niche.

This is a huge deal but not in the negative light most players here believe it has.

This is the first step for true fighting game unity.
