Last year, BlazBlue was one of the best and most surprising standouts to appear in the Summer. We got one of the best 2D fighting games in recent memory from a developer that's much smaller than a powerhouse such as Capcom. But it should've been no surprise to fans of the genre that Arc Systems managed to piece together such an incredible fighter, after all these are the same people responsible for the Guilty Gear franchise. Well now, Arc System is also bringing their all new franchise to the PSP with a port of BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger.

All twelve fighters from the console games will be present here, and each fighter will also boast an "Unlimited" version, as well. The game's characters are not just diverse in how they look, but also extremely diverse in how they act, with multiple fighters types suited for various types of gamers. Every fighter also boasts Drive Attacks, allowing them to deliver devastating elemental blows, and even being able to suck the life out of opponents.

What's great about a game like BlazBlue is that it's probably the most fluid playing fighter on the market, and I'm certainly eager to see that fluidity on the PSP. Furthermore, features from the console game, such as the story mode, will be carried over to this portable game, in addition to Arcade, Versus, Score Attack, Training, Shop, and Legion mode. The all new shop will allow you to spend in-game currency to unlock art and "Unlimited" form fighters. Legion Mode is an all new gauntlet of sorts where every opponent you defeat aligns with you, and your goal is to conquer the game map.

My only concern is that there is no infrastructure online for the PSP game, so multiplayer is limited to just local Ad-Hoc gameplay. Still, BlazBlue is a game you can enjoy on your own, because if the gameplay of the console game is any indication of what the portable game will be like, PSP owners are sure in for a huge treat. From what we've been told, just about the only sacrifice made to BlazBlue Portable is the visuals, which is obvious, but there is still no doubt that it is one great looking PSP game.

BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger for the PSP is scheduled to arrive March 9th.

@Ben,
OK, got a PSP multi-player question.
Since I don't do any MP modes, I'm not that familiar with some of of the workings of it, especially on the PSP.

Although I see them listed in the menu on my PSP's, what exactly is those "infrastructure" and "local Ad-Hoc" modes for online, and/or their differences too????

To Biker Saint:

The infrastructure mode is playing online vs other players wherever they maybe just like you would on the ps3. (Make sure your psp's wlan switch is on and you have a wireless router connected to your modem to do so). Ad hoc mode is used playing against other psp players directly, say, who are sitting near you, without the aid of the internet.

@Shams,
Thanks for the 411.

BTW, you probably just gave this young geezer a new wrinkle to add to the knowledge area of his old gray matter. LOL

BikerSaint, keep it up. You're only as young as you feel, as they say, so bravo. I highly recommend even dabbling online, because it really is a wonderful feature that was introduced last-gen, and has been cemented this gen.

Sounds solid! Hopefully Ad-Hoc Party will support it.
