E3 2006: Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops Revealed

The previously untitled MGS Action Game for the PSP promised to be a bit different from the norm. Now known as MGS: Portable Ops, it's not quite as wacky as the card-based AC!D series, but it certainly takes a different approach to the traditional gameplay.

Instead of just playing one character, you'll have control over an entire brigade. Despite the departure, the game will be part of the MGS canon, revealing the events between MGS3: Snake Eater and the original Metal Gear as Big Boss attempts to build his own private army of renegades, Foxhound. The game will take place in the 1970s and another interesting twist dictates that anytime you or a recruit dies, the expiration is permanent – so you'll have to take extra care in cultivating your elite unit. Mutliplayer online modes allow you to recruit characters such as EVA and Ocelot to fight opposing teams.

We've got a wealth of screenshots, featuring nigh PS2-caliber graphics here .
