Sony Reveals Social Networking Applications For Vita

You know, we can't live without 'em. …or something like that.

Today, Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that it will introduce several dedicated applications to PlayStation Vita. As if you couldn't guess, this includes Facebook, foursquare, Skype, and Twitter. As found in the official press release:

"PS Vita users will not only be able to enjoy the immersive rich gaming content but through the addition of these social networking services and communications widely used around the globe will also have an easy access and greater opportunity to enjoy communicating with friends by simply selecting the dedicated application. PS Vita, as the next generation portable entertainment system, will deliver an unrivaled entertainment experience, through close collaboration with various social networking services and communications."

The apps in question will be downloadable from the PlayStation Store, and they'll be completely free. You'll just activate the app by selecting the icon that will appear on Vita's home screen; it's as easy as that. Lastly, don't forget that with that pretty 5-inch OLED screen, users will be able to "enjoy photos and movies shared with their friends and acquaintances via Internet in visually striking graphics."

As the analysts keep saying, the Vita can't just be a dedicated gaming device. I still say it can, but whatever.

The Vita can be anything that Sony wants it to be. It has every possible interface and then some. The Back Touch Pad is innovative. Dual cams, Gyros, GPS, WIFI, Toucscreen. BUTTONS!!!

Again I ask…

What can the PSVita NOT do?

The PS Vita can't bake you cupcakes.

Mmmmmmm…. cupcakes… 😛

The pessimists way to receive this news is to say that this pretty much confirms that Vita will not be able to run Android apps. Not that it was such a huge surprise.

The good news is of course that this *may* mean that Sony will keep supporting the device with apps not just related to gaming. Not anywhere near what Android would add to the device, but still. It's something.
But is it enough? Time will tell!

@Fatha: The question here is not what it can do, but what it *will* do. That's my main concern here.

Everything depends on what Sony will allow it to do. And how well will it do it? That entirely up to Sony. That's the faith of a closed system…

For me, if they nail the browser i will find a way to get the cash together for one. I wouldnt it all being sweet with internet and whatnot but a broswer that doesnt support flash and whatnot. im a massive fan of watching things online, not just youtube so itd really be a must for me. I mean if it couldnt do that then id honestly consider an android device over it. Though id be massively dissapointed. this looks beastly good

My oh My… I just hope the GUI we see in this picture is just a bad knockoff place holder, what a ugly classless interface, like something right out of those Chinese knockoff gadgets 🙁
Now the device itself… what a beauty and the beast combination. Hope they come out with tons of great games and sell off the first day. Being able to check my Facebook account on it won't hurt either 🙂

I thought the same thing about the interface. Maybe it is just something you have to see before passing judgment.

NAhhhh..! It is not ugly but also not pretty either. Reminds me of Nintendo for some reason.

Exactly, it looks like something a Nintendo console would have for an interface… I hope we have a option to just use XMB or a more graphically intense version of it. I just does not have that classy look that comes with the PS brand.

According to IGN, it's confirmed that PS Vita will have 512MB of RAM as well as 128MB of dedicated VRAM. Yay!

512MB….not a surprise, but I guarantee you there will be dozens of posts by people whining about how little it is and castigating Sony for learning nothing.

There weren't on IGN when I read this. It was getting a lot of praise.

MBs? That will never be enough? Sony doesn't know what they are doing! Why not 512GBs?

sarcasm guys…

That's great! Give Vita all the useful things smartphones can do and at least simple make/recieve calls and play your PS3 games on your Vita and vice versa and Vita will destroy anything.

Also, how about giving these features to the PS3? it's been almost five years!

FatherSun

Skype, Facebook, Twitter and foursquare on the Vita! Can the PS3 be far behind?

That would bring some shine into the PS3 system since the Vita is Gleaming right now with features.

Hey! What about Google+?

Love it or Hate it Social Gaming is here to stay. It will soon grow exponentially and will be the cause of all media melting into one another. Sony is smart to integrate these Networks. It will only make the Vita more visible and accessible.

I do not mind the Networks at all because I know that the Vita is a TRUE gaming device. It is what all the Phones/Tablets want to be when they grow up. Vita will be able to do all that they do and more. Sony needs to make this absolutely clear to the audience. The Vita can be Sony's greatest success if handled properly.

Anyone know if ANDROID is still on the table for the Vita?

The real question, in my mind, is "Hey! What about Android?". That would give them a device that was up to date with all the latest trends on the social media market today and tomorrow, totally for *free*.

So to answer your question: This announcement pretty much confirms no Android support. There would be no reason to develop those apps had such support existed.

This device keeps getting better and better. Just wished it came out sooner but on another note with the global ps3 price drop which came at a perfect time cause my 80gb system is on life support and soon will have to pull the plug once I get the 320gb model

Thanks for the 411 guys!

I'm rather very anti-social toward those kind of sites, although I do have Twitter.

And that's mainly to get all the gaming developer/publisher info quickly.

The other bonus of having Twitter for me, has been that I've won all kinds of gaming swag from it, games, DLC, T-shirts, gift cards, bobble-heads, sculptures & diecast figurines, etc.

The only negative thing is that you've always got to on at exactly the right moment to have any chance of entering & then winning all the different gaming company giveaways, LOL.

BTW, I do have Raptr too(& I've even won a $100 Amazon gift card from them too).
But now I hate how Raptr has re-vamped their site, because now I can't frigging find my own achievements/trophy list page there anymore.

These are really cool features and I could actually use them. I know some here are very leery of social stuff, but they have very good uses too. I personally use Facebook and Twitter (great for breaking news) although I do not use them as much as other people do. You know, the types who tweet every minute detail of their lives? They get blocked or removed right away. Haha!

Great to see Skype confirmed as well. As long as you got wi-fi, the PS Vita could pretty much double as a phone!

Sony, you've got my money when you announced the specs and the games. I just want a clear date as to when I could actually get my hands on it.

this is exactly whats wrong with $ony today!
besides not giving a sh*t about their fans of course.
they go to gamescom, the wolrds 2nd largest gaming event.
millions of people are going to be watching!
so what do they spend over 50% of there time on?
big famous blockbusters?
new innovative IPs?
nope, freaking social media!
i said it once, twice, and ill say it again.
$ony has turned into freaking nintendo!
come on when you turn up to E3 the worlds largest gaming event and focous on crappy kids games, then come to gamescom and again focous on crappy kids content, thats when you know your REALLY in trouble!
hell when they FINALLY got to the ps3, what did they announce?
a crappy fitness game, and a crappy dancing game!
fitness?
dancing?
i swear to god, utube made a mistake this is not $onys presser its nintendos!
its like Ferrari turning up to the Geneva motor show and showing off a 10K hatchback!
not what their famous for, a exotic well made luxurious supercar, a cheap poorly made crappy hatchback!
what is this world coming to???????????

ONLY thing worth watching from there presser was the resistance footage, that looked really cool!
that and of course uncharted 3, amazing as ever!
but come on, thats it?
2 things from a hour and a half video?
i was wondering why they had to play that loud dance music at the end of the show.
but now i know, it was to wake the audience up!
i swear to god, anyone who was sitting there watching that and stayed awake should be given a medal!
