According to recent rumors, Sony was forced to reduce the memory capacity of the new PlayStation Vita.
But although the final system specifications have yet to be officially revealed, a Sony Japan executive told Develop that the RAM has never been cut. The rumor spread when the unit was first announced and some sources said it boasted 512MB memory. Then, when development kits began to circulate, it was believed the system only had 256MB internal memory. However, the 512MB was never actually confirmed and for that matter, neither was the 256MB. We don't know how much memory it has; all we know is that Sony says the RAM has never been reduced. As Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida said: "Do not believe everything you read on the Internet."
Maybe we should all just wait until the specs have been revealed. That way, we don't get involved in such misguided speculation.
Again those bloody gaming ass websites.
256 is too low for future games.
The iPhone has 512
Yes, but as the article points out we don't know how much memory the thing has, so posting categorical comments about something that is pure speculation is a textbook example of pointlessness.
Yeah just watch, itll turn out to have 128 MBs hehehe, jk
I think there's a good chance it'll have 512. That seems to be the standard now. Unless you ask Nintendo. 😛
What does RAM do for the PSP? Is it speed or what?
Lets devs create more and do more on the system when making games.
Cross your finger and hope for 1 gig
I think it has 1GB
@ highlander, it's called speculation, its fun and builds hype. You should try it some time.

in this case it isn't building hype, only doubt
:/
Kevinator, it's called pointless speculation you should try avoiding it sometime.
@shadowknight ummm yeah, good luck keeping a decent battery life with that one gig of ram there…
Well, it will be interesting to see how much memory the thing has. Considering that the memory used isn't exotic, unlike the XDR used in the PS3; and also taking into account the amounts of RAM in even entry level smartphones, there should be plenty of RAM.
Whatever the number, we've already seen some very impressive games and visuals from the thing, so whatever it has, it's clearly sufficient for the task.
Indeed.
Maybe we should all just wait until the specs have been revealed. That way, we don't get involved in such misguided speculation.
A very true statement Ben, I try to do this with any rumor I hear.
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yah it's better to wait a while before the opening day for this gadget. My best bet would be 256 or 512, hahaha.
I dont blame that guy for starring.
Which one is the EURO and which one is the ASIAN?
The guy on the left is Caucasian just like ur dude in ur pic.
That's me in the pic haha I dont hide behind avatars.
I am going to mirror what the Sony boss Shuhei Yoshida says: Do not believe everything you read on the internet. That's how World War 2 got started.
Wolf,
Of course they had internet back then.
But I'm pretty sure they still calledit a telephone back then, LOL
They even had wireless, but I think that was more for music than data…. 😉
@Bikersaint, possibly also Highlander:
It was a Kevin Butler ad reference.
World War II as Microsoft's fault
WW3 has just started with this gaming industry.
hahaha.
You heard it here first,
It will have 1gb of Ram 😉
we are getting awfully close to the system's release without knowing the final specs. the site that first reported the cut in ram has been reliable in the past when reporting on sony so i think there may be some truth to this. there are even developers out there commenting the cut in ram does not worry them so it sounds like something happened.
Often times there is a difference between development machines and production machines. often dev systems have more memory to accommodate the larger binaries generated when all the debug code is in place. Then when that stage of development is complete, the code is cleaned up and optimized on production machines to ensure it can actually fit. So the devs may be really commenting on the shift from the base development systems to the actual production units because that is likely a halving of the available memory.
3DS has 128 doesn't it? So Vita is twice as much.
Hmmmm. I can't believe the internets? Oh Noez!

Apparently everything on TV is a lie too!!! What kind of world do we live in?
Messed up Society. Damn it!
"Do not believe everything you read on the internet".
Truth.
The Vita will probably only come with 256MB, since the PS3 only has 256MB.
Some say that it is as powerful as a PS3. – The Stig
I thought the PS3 has 512 split into two – 256 for video and 256 for the system.
What I meant was that the Vita will probably only have 256MB of discrete video memory and 256MB system RAM like the PS3.
Cowboy bebop
Quagmire does one thing well and that's women. Cut him some slack.
Does anyone else think the ad below the article for 'wrinkle cream' looks like a different kind of cream? Its kind of disturbing.
I wanna find out whoever is spreading these rumors, then give them a proper and well deserved beatdown. Do they really have nothing better to do with their time than spread lies and rumors? smh
Whatever the case, I'm not going to worry about it till we get official specs. I'm confident that Sony will give Vita sufficient memory to do what it needs to do. (that said, I would think that even 512Mb is low balling it, my phone has more RAM than that).
I anxiously await… credit card in hand 😉
So as long the RAM doesn't surpass the PS3's I can pretty much count on Sony porting many of the best VITA games to PS3. I'm taking a wait and see approach to Vita. And if I can end up getting the best games on the system I already own without having to lay down 250 for a handheld that would be best for me.

"Don't believe everything on the internet" made me laugh, Kevin Butler. hahaha
Where has he been anyways, I wounder if we will see more of him come Nov. and Dec.
I'm sure we will.
And for the Vita, I'm not all that interested in it. It's really cool and easily going to be the best handheld. Anything is better then the DS. It just an't for me. When I'm gaming it's on my free time at home, I won't get one until I do a lot of traveling and stuff but by then Sony will be producing a gadget that is a phone and game system in your hand. NOT what the "Playstation phone" turned out to be..
It can't logically be cut until it is officially confirmed, right? It's never been confirmed, so case closed. Whatever it ends up being is what it was supposed to have been.
if they want to run with the smartphones of today they would be wise to go with at least 512.
i mean look at the new samsung galaxy s2, or the new motorolla droid the worlds 2 most powerful smart phones, and the 2 first with dual cores.
only thing im worried about is the battery life.
kinda pointless having a hand held if the battery cant last more then a few hours!
apparently its coming out on october 28th too…….
yea and scooby doo is making my dinner!
would be nice, but i seriously doubt it would be releasing THAT early!

The RAM that keeps getting talked about is the system RAM not the dedicated memory for the GPU (which I'm pretty sure isn't shared) which is supposedly 128MB. If it's 256MB system RAM and 128MB for the memory that's 384MB combined and that would be perfectly fine for the PSV. The more RAM the better sure but at the same time the handheld with 3/4 the total RAM (not going to get into the speed differences of it) of the PS3 is more than fine when you factor in everything.
At the same time, a little more RAM couldn't boost production costs that much, could it? O_o They're not going to lose much, if anything on the hardware going by a few interviews that have been done since E3.
