We'll probably find out later this evening but in the meantime, "PS Vita" is getting more traction amongst journalists and online communities.
Originally dubbed the "Next Generation Portable" (NGP), the PSP successor should take up a large portion of Sony's E3 2011 press conference. It should also receive a finalized name, which, according to recent trademark filings , could very well be the "PlayStation Vita." Sony has filed two trademark applications for the latter name (as well as "PS Vita") in Europe; these trademarks cover different areas of entertainment, including "game programs for handheld games with liquid crystal displays." This supports other leaks that indicate the true name of the PSP2 (we still kinda like that title), and certain E3-related materials have also hinted at the name, "Vita." Well, what's in a name…really?
Whatever it's called, the nifty unit should end up with quite the impressive lineup of launch software , and that's what matters.
As Bill The Cat used to say…..
"Pfffft……..ACK"!!!!!

I like the name! Sounds outer worldly.
I agree. I like it too.
Well I dunno to me it sounds like something AWFUL… PS Vita… Windows VISTA dun dun dun. Hope it doesn't follow the same trend lol
Or like you know those water filters. Brita XD
I am loving the machine for what is inside and the promising games but I am not sure about this name.
Just my opinion tho. This little gadget is a D1P for me.

Not sold on the name or the system, but if Gran Turismo comes to the Vita, consider me a customer.
I hate the name. Love the unit, hate the name. It's one of those BS names that some marketing 'genius' comes up with in a Perrier induced trace while flying business class back from Tokyo.
I agree with Biker, it's a hairball inducing name.
I hope they don't let the same 'genius' name the PS4, we might end up with PlayStation Astral – or some such nut-job name.

The Playstation Supernatural!
i know right? vita?! sounds like some sort of resort, not a gaming system!
My thoughts exactly.
I'm glad somebody who's opinion I value is the same as mine. It probably will end up being Vita although I can't see it being much worse than that at least the hardware itself should be amazing with awesome games.
What if they named the PS5 the PS Vita. It could be PSV for short, of course, where the 'v' doubles for 5. =D
Sounds like a performance enhancing drug 😀
I was thinking the same thing! PS HGH + Anabolic Steriods!
Yea, sounds like PSViagra…with some dumb motto like…..
"Guaranteed not to turn you into a Mr Softee"
I saw the same thing. HA!!
All they need is for the PS button to be blue…
Uhm… HighLander, how come you know the colour of the Viagra so well?
😉
LOL! Because I live in the US, and you are continually bombarded on mainstream TV at all hours by commercials for various enhancement products – that *I* have no need for….
well at least its original, instead of calling it psp2.
I'm all for originality, however Vita just strikes me as, well not a game console portable or otherwise.
PS Vita > WonderSwan
Let's face it, virtually every gaming system has had a stupid name, the biggest exception being the PlayStation. Pure genius. What happened to whoever named it? Was it Kutaragi?
Playstation vita sounds cool to me.
Maybe they wanted everyone to call it PSV but they couldn't find a good word that starts with a V. So they decided on Vita. I can't think of any other V word. PS Value? Vapor?
I don't mind the name too much as PS VIta doesn't roll completely but the machine is worth having!!!
Whats wrong with PSP2? Sony has always been simple with names why change now.
If you ask me, Vita is dangerously close to Vista, and that just carries too many bad memories for me. PSP2 would have been a fine name choice IMO.
I don't like this name either. Maybe someone should start a petition asking, or perhaps begging, Sony to change it.
I don't like the name Vita. It means life in Latin and Italian, so maybe it's just a name given to the European version, although it's unlikely they'll use multiple names.
I don't really care for the name.
One of my friends said he wouldn't buy the system until it is $150, this is a guy who bought a Nintendo 3DS for $250. I couldn't help but laugh at him in his face.
Maybe it's a crazy acronym? What could Vita stand for….?
Very Intriguing Travel Assistant?
Spanish for life
@vicious54
'Life'in spanish is 'Vida'
I'll just call it PS Life.:)
hmm ill just keep calling it the psp2.
Maybe this is Just Sony's plan to sell us all on NGP. Some complained about NGP at first, but I bet we'd all be happy if they switch back to NGP now.
Vita is just a terrible name for a console… I'll never call it that. I've grown fond of NGP lately, I'll stick to that.
i hate the name. it sounds cheap, and doesn't sound like a game machine. wimpy sounding name.
PlayStation Cargo(Pants)
Mmm velvita oh sorry was thinking of cheese LOL JK
It's an alright name but could be better but hey the name won't hurt it 🙂 sounds like a great handheld 🙂 can't wait.
Don't care what they call it…Im getting it ! Seeing that new uncharted
game holy crap !! SOLD !!
Sony is livin la Vita loca
As much as I enjoy various cheeses…
Oh god, just open the floodgates and let all the insults and jokes out. I'll give the Microsoft fans a free pass on this one.
PS Vita > Xbox 360
Not by much, but 360 is horrible.
Zune, too, for that matter.
But what else would you expect from a company that named an OS that released in 1996 "Windows 95".
It's already out-of-date when you buy it!!!

If they wanted to call it the PSV, then why not PS Va-va-voom! lol.
I think Vita sux as a game console name. It doesn't make a bold statement. Vita is usually associated with products that you ingest / eat… dammit!
Fresh name. I like it.
not a real fan of the name, but eh it will do!
my lord can sony make one announcement without letting it slip?
well, at least they did not release a certain video on a certain store early………….
😉
