Hoax? Maybe. Cool name? …well, that's up to you guys. I really have no comment one way or the other.
According to various sources, Sony's Next Generation Portable (NGP) will be officially named the "PS Vita," and will likely be a big part of Sony's E3 press conference next week. The latter is likely true, but what about that "PS Vita?" Well, it started on the personal blog of Hugo Miramontes and spread to other sources, some of which supposedly found updates to help verify the name claim. Now, we're not going to post any link because the info is gone; Miramontes took everything down and posted up an apology:
"This has to be one of the stupidest things I've ever done. I don't know what I was thinking. I'm sorry. I really am."
That could mean anything, really. It could mean he leaked something he shouldn't have and Sony reprimanded him, or he put it up as a joke and it exploded on the Internet, which he didn't expect would happen. Either way, let's not forget that "Vita" was a name we saw associated with the PSP's successor before the NGP was officially unveiled.
Take from that what you will…
I'm not that keen on the name, if it is officially going to be called "Vita". I mean, it doesn't have that ring to it like what existing PlayStation gaming devices have. PS3, PSP, PS Move all can be said easily. But PS Vita? Would they call it PSV? Hmmm…
Anyway, I think I'd get used to it eventually but I'm still hoping for a better, cooler name for NGP.
NGP seems more suitable if you ask me, I don't mind if they use that name for it.
Vita doesn't suit it in my opinion.

Sony has stupid names lately, I mean cmon Qriocity?
@World, At a Sony event in NY one of the reps went into how Qriocity may evolve. They are referring to the music service as Q Music (As in Que Music) versus Qriocity Music Unlimited. That was a mouthful.
I can just imagine those meetings when they brainstorm names of products and services. Vita?
Yeah, they're kind of all over the place with their names… More so nowadays. Walkman made sense. So did CyberShot. PS makes sense as does Move, the Xperia Play is… yeah. But then you've got the Bravia, the rumoured S1 tablet. Some of their marketing team have to be on crack or something… But I still prefer most of those names to Project Natal/Kinect/Project Cafe/Wii.
Peace.
Guys this name does make perfect sense. In Latin this would translate to PlayStation Life. And for a device promising to connect us to every part of our PS Lifestyle at all times it becomes a very fitting name indeed. It does make sense, I think you all are just taking it at face value, same with Qriocity. I mean yes the Que Music part along with it being a Cloud music program, if you are curious search a song and listen to it. These names do have meaning I believe you guys are overlooking, that being said I think they are quite clever and understandable. I mean look at the Wii and tell me SONY sucks at naming products.
@world,
dude, Qriocity i think is actually pretty cool.
Vita on the other hand? sounds like an isotonic juice drink :/
qriocity sounds cool if you ask me but vita not too much.
Vita sounds a little too similar to vista for me.
Same.
word
yup
And we all know how well that went
-.-

Well, on first glance, totally stupid. Playstation Vitamin? Then again it's sort of retro-Bioshockey. Just call it PSP2 and be done with it.
Retro-Bioshitty. I'd rather PSP2 as well.
I was wrong, not Bioshockey, Fallout New Vegasey. When you test out on the Vito-meter.
IIRC there are Vita Chambers in BioShock, so that works too.
PSP2 is too gstandard, and also makes it sound a little dated. too long, something new and catchy would grab more newcomers than psp2 imo.
for those already interested it wouldnt make much difference but you wanna get more newcomers on board, something new and catchy.
Vita is a step in the right direction, just its a bit stupid.
been coming to this sight since mid 09, thought i'd finally sign up. So….we have a box that thinks it's a circle…xbox 360, we have a company that calls itself heaven…nintendo, now we have a japanese company speaking italian…sony. vita is life in italian by the way. I personally liked ngp as the name..much better than just sticking a number at the end of a name imo. anyways…yea, not diggin the name
It could only be considered Next Generation Portable before it is on the market.
Well, once on sale at least the acronym would stay the same. Now Generation Portable.
Also, Welcome.
A small correction… Vita is latin.
…and Italian.
Granted, but Italian was originally the vernacular version of Latin, and I'm a purist. Sticking to my guns on this one Fane!
Thumbs down for principle?! Bah, I care not!
LOL now generation portable
@ Lawless
So were Spanish and French, but they're distinct languages now, as is Italian.
Your "correction" was incorrect, since playaplus' statement was 100% correct, so I re-corrected you.
FWIW I didn't give you the thumbs-down.
Please tell that name is make.believe!
I don't care if it's called $hitty-$hit-$hit. I was hoping for PSP2, no one complained when there was the Playstation2(3) so what's wrong with PSP2?
At this rate our next gen console may not be called the PlayStation 4.
May the next gen console naming speculation begin.
I will go with:
Sony Synergy. Where Media, Entertainment and Information merge!
…or where they synergate.
Just as the NGP might be known as PS Vist…sorry Vita; the PS4 might be known as PS-ME…and the special edition PS-MESE…
MESE PESE..
Touche!
The PS4 will be called PS Mortis.
Vita = Life
Mortis = Death.
Noooo stick to ps4, dont change what aint broke, everyone knows ps2, ps3, so you say ps4 and people would instantly know what youre talking about.
Giving it a new name would mean a whole load more advertising.
Word of mouth is a great advertiser and PS4 would sell itself by name. everyone would know.
'dude seen the ps4?'
'nooo, gotta check that?!'
'dude seen the *generic slightly catchy new name here*?'
'wtf is that?'
'essentially the ps4'
'ohhh, yeah ill totally check it'
essentially the ps4?
why not just make it the ps4?

@LV
really? if someone asked you what are you playing on and you had to reply 'the sh*tty sh*t sh*t' you wouldnt mind?
Coz if not, loooooooool.
They'd be stupid to name the ps4 anything but ps4.
The reason they may not go with PSP2 is because it doesn't sound new, we are in the generation of the ps3 and 360, PSP2 can make it sound like old tech. Personally I really don't care what it is called as long as it's a quality device.

how are they gonna get to playstation 9 if they dont have playstation 4 and up. cant go changing the name! they already showed the future of gaming and told us what it was called!
vertigo…maybe it's just me…but I dont lik the 4 letter/number thing…too long imo
In a word;
"No."
Hey???? You copying and pasting comments? LOL..
It's funny how that response can be used to answer so many question so accurately.
Indeed, it really sums up how I feel so eloquently, and coming from me, it's a surprisingly brief comment.
So I guess you are all balanced out with comments now. lol..
For him to be really balanced out i suppose he'd have to just leave a load of blank comments that get thumbed up anyway 😛
Man, that is dumber than "wii". It would have been cool if they went with just "Playstation". I don't know, it sounds cool to me anyways.
been done.
The thing that kills it for me, is that it's basically taking the 's' out of Vista. Who in the H E double-hockey-sticks wants to name a product anything even remotely close to the name of one of the worst retail Operating Systems ever sold with a PC?
Nothing–I repeat nothing–is worse than "Wii".
lol @ world. XD
