Star Ocean Creators Bringing Frontier Gate To PSP

If you're a fan of developer Tri-Ace – and many role-playing aficionados are – you'll be interested in learning more about their new project.

Little is known at this time, but it seems the Star Ocean developer has teamed up with Konami to work on two new projects : one is a dungeon-crawler for the Nintendo 3DS called The Labyrinth while the other is a "turn-based multiplayer role-playing PSP title called Frontier Gate that supports up to three players." Usually, when old-school RPG followers see "turn-based," they're excited…but when it has to be combined with multiplayer, many in that same group are a little disappointed. Even so, we have plenty of faith in Tri-Ace and something like Frontier Gate could be a fantastic addition to the PSP's ever-expanding library. Lest we forget, there are plenty of quality RPGs on Sony's portable.

And that includes the recently released Final Fantasy IV: Complete Collection , which I can't seem to stop playing. 🙂

I have RPG loving friends on PSN. But none who also actively play or even own a PSP.

I'd likely be far more into this title if it were a console release. As for now, I'll have to wait and see how dependant it is on being multiplayer. A heavy-multiplayer driven game on the PSP won't be for me, I'm afraid. PSP is a strictly solitary activity.

I do love Tri-Ace, however.

The PSP is the place to be for RPG lovers at the moment, S-E recently released 3 titles for the console, I got Final Fantasy IV through the post todays so i've been having a blast on that 😀

Oh I agree, 100% Ultimadream!

I was just saying I'm not sure I would be able to engage in a multiplayer PSP version of an RPG.

Tri-Ace is my absolute favorite RPG this gen, right above Mistwalker. Resonance of Fate was underappreciated, surprisingly by the same ones who call for challenging RPGs. Beautiful Game. Tri Ace's new game engine for HD consoles looks amazing, too.

I enjoyed Resonance of Fate. But it wasn't that spectacular, at all. Same strategy from the beginning will last you right up until the end.

To me, it merely had the appearance of depth, but in reality, wasn't all that deep.

Still though… it was definitely fun enough.

I could not stand Ressonace of Fate, The battle system was beyond needlessy complicated and silly, It's excuse for a world map was poor and from what i played of it the story seemed to be going nowhere. I did like the characters and art design though.

I like tri-ace, but mp turn based doesn't really motivate me to play. However since I don't have any psp wielding friends close at hand, maybe it means I can play solo and have control over my entire party.

Meh, we want console rpgs. Loved Star Ocean, they shouldn't have ended it.

I don't like it either. It feels claustrophobic.

When I hear RPG and Multiplayer I immediately feel depressed. Course WKC wasn't too bad…wait the SP sucked and the MP was decent….

Ya…I don't think RPG/Multiplayer has been done correctly yet for me.

My sentiments exactly.

I really liked FFXI, but I think I'm done paying subscription fees for MMO's, now. There certainly hasn't been a free multiplayer/rpg for me either.
