Lest we forget, the PS2 was going strong until just last year, which means it continued on for four years (so far) beyond the launch of the PS3. Therefore, you shouldn't expect the PSP to disappear when the new portable – currently dubbed the Next Generation Portable – hits store shelves. President of Sony Computer Entertainment worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida told Edge that the NGP and PSP will coexist in the market. He says it just wouldn't make any sort of business sense to kill off the original PSP because currently, Sony is "struggling" to meet rising consumer demand.
"The NGP features everything Sony can and wants to do today. It's a platform looking forward with great ambition. It can't replace a platform that has already been on sale for seven years now. In terms of pricing, we can't sell the NGP for the same price as a PSP. The PSP has become very affordable and popular, especially with younger generations.
I think the NGP needs time to mature and get adopted by users. So, for the time being, both platforms will coexist."
Makes perfect sense to us. The PSP might be a gateway to the NGP for later adopters, anyway. For our part, we're just psyched to see that new handheld; it looks to be a beast of a device, and it's all sorts of cutting-edge. Leave it to Sony.
That's great, but also with the 'play' coming too, that'll give us more psp1 games I bet.

LOL! Or it's simply history repeating itself. Sony didn't withdraw the original PS when PS2 arrived, and they didn't withdraw the PS2 when PS3 arrived. Sony likes to have one generation as the 'premium' brand, and the previous generation as the 'budget' version.

I bet that they push downloadable titles more than before.
I'll also bet you won't see PlayStation Suite on the PSP because of the limited system RAM.

Also, this seem like a big duh to me. Just like all of Sony's products the NGP will take a while to catch on so we will always have the older platform for a while.

they have to, the ngp is not going to sell too well because its going to be seriously expensive so sony will need something to boots their sales up.
Oh, I like this. if the PSP hangs around, that will likely mean one more hardware revision and a price cut. If Sony could somehow squeeze the PSP down to $99.99 and push bigtime on downloadable games, it would be the perfect counter to 'cheap' Nintendo crap and a superb 'gateway' product to bring gamers into the NGP line eventually.
So this will leave Sony actively selling PSP, NGP, PS2, PS3 and the Xperia Play along with the PlayStation Suite. That's a very integrated product line. Want to be whether we start seeing BluRay players and Bravia TVs with PlayStation Suite capability?
Now that you mentioned that, you just made me think twice about upgrading my current TV. LOL
Although I'll likely be getting the NGP day one, or soon after, it's good to hear that they'll continue to support the PSP. IMO, devs are really tapping into the rull potential of the device now, proven by games such as GoW:GoS and VC2. Plus with Type-0 just around the corner, and whatever else devs are still working on, it'll be an interesting death knell for the PSP. Honestly, I don't think it'll last as long as the PS2 did, simply because of the smaller user base, but I'll be very surprised if it disappears before the end of 2013.

That's excellent news. So as much as I'd like to purchase NGP day 1, I might not be able to afford it. If that is the case I can still use my psp for a while.
I got to go buy a PSP, some games I would love to play. Don't like the other versions cause they're smaller and I got full male hands.
