Considering the fact that game length is always such a hot topic these days, we figure this news deserves a headline of its own.
We know that Famitsu has awarded a perfect score to Kojima's latest portable offering, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker , which probably isn't all that surprising. We're well aware of the stellar track record of these particular game designers, and the master rarely lets us down. But perhaps one of the reasons the game scored four perfect 10s is because there's just so much stealth/action goodness. As multiple sources have already reported, the story campaign in Peace Walker ranges between 30 and 40 hours. …now, that's a little out of whack, considering that MGS4 – another game that scored a perfect 40 from Famitsu – was nowhere near that long. But then again, Kojima has long since said that this handheld iteration could very easily be dubbed "Metal Gear Solid 5," so it's no big shock that he poured a lot of effort into this installment. At the same time, it's still only a PSP title and we didn't really expect the game to offer RPG-length hours. Not that we're complaining, or anything.
So is this more incentive, or were you already planning to pick up the game? And would it have mattered if it was only 6-8 hours instead of 30-40 hours?

I can't speak to anyone else's experience, but my first playthru of 'Guns of the Patriots' lasted 42 hours (set on 'Big Boss Hard', and including cutscenes), so this really isn't hard to believe at all. Though good to know, regardless.
Yeah, the difficulty level plays a lot into how long a game truly is:
Flying through it VS A real challenge where everything must be done at a snail's pace. And then there's always the middle (normal/hard difficulty) which is both challenging and doable.
Ya, that's definitely true. The difficulty gives it more length. I love playing on the hardest difficulty possible. A lot of people seem to ask me why I do that and I just feel like it's more of a challenge and I'm getting more for my money. Even when it's really frustrating when something takes so many tries to make it through, it's worth it. I think if I didn't challenge myself, it wouldn't be as fun.
The first play through was indeed 40+ hours incl. all cutscenes played. I know you can knock 20-25 hours off if you rush it. But will the game be the same fun. I don't think so.
my psp has been getting a lot of love lately. between the tv shows movies and comics i have been using my psp more than i have in a long time. i need to get some money together so i can pick this up and check it out. probably wait for some reviews but i really want to play it.
MGS4 was more like 12-14, for me anyway.
Great to see this one's even longer.
6-8? 12-14? It took me 29 hours for my first playthrough of mgs 4. And I enjoyed every minute of it.

I don't have a psp and I wish I had one =(
Joystiq reported that dell is selling psp gos for $189. You get a $60 instant rebate. If I had the money I would be all over that.
Bing cashback is at 5% for Dell right now. It's not a lot but it's something. I love having a PSP because it seems like the prices on used game's goes down so quickly after a game is released so I buy my games for cheap. And I have my PS3 to keep me busy of course until the prices drop. But I pre-ordered this one from Amazon since they have a $10 credit and I love MGS.
Money well spent. My PSN wallet us already prepped for this bad boy. I'd see slot more movies if they were priced a buck an hour!
Contrast this with Splinter Cell: C 5 hour single player campaign. Weak sauce.
Kojima, does it again. By far my favorite game designer.
The sales should be interesting to watch, especially since the Japanese love handhelds and MGS.
And you said how much was cutscenes? Sometimes I'm glad I don't play MGS…
2 hours
And you're missing out on a gem, your loss
>_> You make me sad, riku.
Sad and disappointed.
Allow me to rephrase what you just posted: "This game is 30-40 hours long with several of those hours being devoted to the story in a saga which boasts a long line of masterfully composed plotlines? What a crock, you can count me out!

Twitch Gamer.
You might wanna stick to Splinter Cell Riku
How?
Yeah I always hate it too when the story takes up a whopping 5% of the SP campaign. Sheesh I mean can't we get some gameplay some where. 😉
It'll take even longer if your co-op buddy is useless.
Ah co-op… good times…
And yet you love RE5…
I think I need a bigger battery!
Damn, that just sounds tasty!!
I haven't payed much attention to this one so far. I downloaded the demo and never played it. Now you've got me all kinds of excited about this.
I love that MGS4 had an ipod while this one has an analog walkman. So rad. Should be a great game.
Nice!
I didn't know they could fit all of that into one UMD
That's exactly what I was thinking! I was playing the demo for this yesterday and it's a good looking game and I'm sure there will plenty of video and audio taking up space so I figured it wouldn't be more than an 8 hour or so game but 30-40 hours just rocks my socks! I will definitely be picking this one up 🙂
This game has to be using all the space in a dual layer umd. With game intsall options, Montser Hunter, Assassins Creed sprinkled in (look it up, it's amazing), Front Mission extras, Co-Op gameplay, in-game ads (Pepsi and axe to name a few), and MGS4 quality in a handheld game…. Everyone should just quit now… HOW DO YOU TOP THIS!? ITS A FREAKING PSP GAME WITH MORE FEATURES AND EXTRAS THAN SOME ENTIRE GAME FRANCHISES!…
I need to lay down…… My head is on overload……………… And here comes flashbacks of me going through MGS4 Big Boss mode in 4 hours and 50 minutes.
If you include MGS4's cutscenes + mission Briefing's and all the codec conversations including the psyche check then i think it might reach around 30-40 hours too.. lol
But let's get analytical with all games then.
With Final Fantasy a lot of time is used up in:
-walking/talking in towns
-Going through menus
-Buying weapons/selling weapons, upgrading, etc.
I bet this game will be longer than Metal Gear Rising
The 360 cant even compete with Sony's handheld!
Sorry I had to get that out of my system.
Twitch gaming is quick and easy, so I'm sure Rising won't be longer than Peace Walker
Yeah, with rising being on 360 I'd be surprised if it's over 5 hours and then MP.
Of course with the amazing stuff that kojima packs into it, the 360 version will still be on a minimum of 3 discs.
I heard a similar story about god of War 3. . . I only came close to that time on Chaos Mode. As usual, imma wait for the PSXe review.
Both longer and lower cost than prior MGS's. Good deal.
hello developers THIS is how you do it!
ive always been a firm believer of less is more, quality over quantity but this 5 hour game length BS lately is really pissing me off!
splinter cell conviction and army of two the 40th day are 2 of the best games ive played this gen, and both are maximum 6 hours long!
length for games should be a absolute minimum of 10 hours, no less than 10!
120 bucks for 5 hours of entertainment, no matter how good it was is a complete utter rip off!
developers will probably use the excuse that they did not have time, like ubisoft did with conviction in regards to not having the move bodies ability.
im sorry, 4 years is not enough to slot that in?
really?
come on ubisoft, honestly what the &^%$ did yous do in those 4 years?
developers probably would use that excuse but i bet 50 bucks that if a new law released saying games less than 5 hours were not allowed to have a RRP of over 50 AUD than they would quickly add more in the same development time.
its just laziness, pure utter laziness!!!!
Wow that is quite a claim, MGS4 took me around 20+ hours…. So that is that just the story then… wow. The more i inevitably hear the more i am unstounded. Glad i got a PSP again recently. I played the demo recently, the new control scheme is far better than Portable Ops isnt it. I am also glad it's not just a simple A-B objective like Portable Ops. that really bugged me, i just hope the story is over the top like that game, i dont want to ever see a character as silly as Ursula.
Wow, I already pre-ordered my "Big Boss" MGS: Peace Walker bundle so I'll be pretty busy when it comes out. 30-40 hours long…I just recently finished playing God of War: Chains of Olympus and beat it in less than 5 hours. If Peace Walker sucks up some good screen time with cut-scenes like MGS4 I'm good (:
Unbelievable. This PSP game puts many next-gen retail games to shame. 30-40 hours and if that's JUST IN NORMAL MODE. Not to mention it's NOT even an RPG? How long are the "reported" cut scenes in this game. 2 hours? Wow, Kojima did 180 from MGS4. I guess this is what he meant by something "big" in Ben's last article:
Kojima Hints At Something Big Related To Peace Walker
BUYING THIS GAME DAY-ONE! OH THE HUMANITY!!!
D1p, people.
Now I feel crappy. I'm the only one who can't use the new word? WTF?
The only thing I'm wondering about is which PSP of mine I'll be playing it on! Oh snap!
dang I always thought MGS4 was more like 50+ hours long -_-
Damn I got to hurry and pre-order this game.
not gonna lie… i'm a little concerned.
i like the feeling of a tight story, where things are happening. 30+ hours of gameplay in a mgs type of game makes me think we'll be doing a lot of repetitive tasks with little plot advancement.
honestly if it were any other game in any other franchise i'd start to wonder if this was a day one purchase or not
