E3 2009: PSP Go! Officially Unveiled, Features And Price

And now, it's Kaz Hirai stepping to the stage and his big announcement can fit in his pocket. It's what he called the "worst-kept secret of E3:" the PSP Go!

It's a sleek little unit. It's "specifically designed for the digital lifestyle" and it will not replace the PSP-3000; Sony will continue to market both simultaneously. The PSP Go! is 50% smaller and 40% lighter than the original PSP-1000, and it features a 16GB internal flash memory, along with built-in Wi-Fi so users can download games and movies from the PlayStation Network. That slide-out feature reveals the controls and keeps the unit compact, and there's even a new memory stick micromedia port. There's also the announcement of Sense Me! for the PSP, which basically analyzes your music library and selects a playlist "based on your mood." Lastly, the PSP Go! is scheduled to hit store shelves in both North America and Europe on October 1; it will retail for $249.99 in the US and 249 Euroes across the pond. Lastly, Hirai makes a point of saying that Sony has drastically reduced the cost of development tools for the PSP: in fact, they've dropped the dev tool cost 80%, which means more designers have access to the ever-evolving handheld. That should boost third-party support!

Oh, and here comes Kazunori Yamauchi; guaranteed that he's gonna announce Gran Turismo for the PSP. Oh yes, here it comes…it be true!

How much is a 16bg iPod touch? With a PSP go you can play REAL games.

My 16GB NANO was 180 euro. Big difference since I never use my PSP for games anyway.

the picture in the headline is different from the ones I've seen before…i would consider a purchase of it only if they put the star and select buttons where they are in this picture…

i'm not too happy about the cost. i'm sure i'll end up getting it anyways. did anyone else feel like they should have shown a lot more LBP psp?

hmmm I have a psp already I'm not going to pay 250 dollar for a new design this was a bad move.

Amen to that. My god of war special edition PSP-2000 is more than enough for me. Juggling UMD's seems easier than juggling games with a PC using the 16MB internal memory, or juggling separate M2 cards.

not meant for u but for the unobtained digital crowd held by ipod and the like. in the market it's aimed at it's perfectly priced, small and has a wealth of abilities the competition doesn't

are u kidding ionhawk with music, pics, vids, and game saves u have to swich mem cards more than pc data swop with this. i like hard copies for home consoles, what made me sell my psp and keep my dsi was the smaller cartridge was more portable. when i go on small trips where i don't want to carry a bag i was confined to one umd game this psp is a digital remedy to some of our ills

I would add that I'm from Mexico and we aren't a rich country like USA not all people have internet and not all schools teach the kids how to use a computer…gonna be sad if some of those kiddos get this PSP in Xmas =p.

Where's the real picture of the PSP Go? The one at the top of this article is just a mock-up.

must have i've had evevry psp and i despise having to carry umds around. the cases are too small and most are too fragile like the umd itself, it's good thinking, i wish they kept memery stick and not a move to micro, but maybe they'll make themafford if needed

"i wish they kept memery stick and not a move to micro"

i think you'll find it was necessary to shrink its overall size down.

The price tag was a bit of a shocker… and I do already have a PSP, but all of the upcoming games are awesome: GT, MGS, Soul Calibur, LBP, AC, etc, etc. I'm very happy with the news of excellent PSP support.

I have a PSP biut if the line up for 2009/2010 really gets better ill get one, can it play UMDs?

I'm glad its not touch screen, they get so messy 😛

No UMDs. It sucks, but I'd be able to live with it considering that it has 16 gb internal storage.

I thought it would have touch capabilities at least. I bout the oringinal PSP at launch for $250 but that was a much more stable time in the economy. If it was priced at $200 I'd get at launch since I need 2 of them looks like it's gonna have to wait until xmas.

I hate the price I hope they reduce it(doubt it though) but Ill get one anyway, dose it still have the touch features? I heard it was supposed to have touch capabilities.

Might not buy it, but might buy it. Either way psp's the HOT item to have

GT5, MGS: PW, LBP, on and on and on and on

Not having a psp by the year's end is just not being a gamer at all, period.

well sony is gonna have another ball grinder fest of I LIKE IT BUT IT'S TOO EXPENSIVE! please stop whining price because most of us are ps3 owners and thats the highest console on the market. ipod touch is like 250 for the small one and doesn't have blutooth tect and some other stuff, this device was made because we as gamers wanted more functionality on the go with less baggage and they delivered, i respect when you say it's out of ur wallet range but don't knock it for not having touch screen or being cheap least it's not as costly as i phone and still has skype

When I saw the 250 price, I thought it was too much but your right, when you put it into perspective, the iPod touch being 250. It's not that much I suppose. I'll probably buy one.

On and Final Fantasy VII is up on the PSN. downloading it now!!

Yeah, 250 dollars might not be too much, but then 249 Euros is like 350 dollars, which is wayy too much!

Just wondering why they could not have used a mini-slot drive and kept the UMD option!

Shame the case isn't textured a bit cause the only downer I can see(other than not having a 2nd analog stick) is that in those Engadget pics, it sure picks up & shows off a lot of messy fingerprints fast.

So I'm guessing it's a good thing that it's not a touch-screen for now.

Tips for all next PSP's….
Texturized skin
touch screen
2nd analog nub

You have to admit that apart from touch screen and second analog nub, Sony has pretty much hit the mark with the PSP Go. Not that the PSP itself was terrible far from the mark considering it's what, 4 or 5 years old now, and yet is routinely compared to the latest and greatest iFawn…not bad eh?

I don't really understand why we have to wait till October 1 to get our hands on PSP Go! I mean it looks like it's good to Go!
