Falcom Reveals Ys Chronicles, Ys Seven

Unless you're an RPG fan, you've probably never heard of Ys . But those who are familiar with the long-running Japanese series will be happy to know that Falcom has announced two new iterations for the PSP.

According to Andriasang, both games were revealed at the Ys Falcom Fes event a couple weeks ago; the first is Ys I&II Chronicles , which is a remake of the first two titles in the series. Actually, this will be the second time the original titles were remade, as a remake also released back in 2001. This remake will be based on that remake, but will certainly boast new elements, "including new visuals and background music." The other title that's coming is Ys Seven , the long-awaited sequel to 2003's Ys 6 . This time, Falcom says we can expect a whole new battle system, featuring the inclusion of party play (a first for the franchise). Dengeki Online has said the game will also include series hero Adol, and more info is to come in an issue of Dengeki PlayStation on March 27. Again, if you're not schooled on this series, you may want to do a little research. We imagine that despite the reported differences, if you enjoyed the previous titles you'll likely enjoy these new installments.

Ys I&II Chronicles is slated to release in July in Japan, with Ys Seven following in September. No word yet on whether or not they'll make their way to other regions, but we'll let you know if Falcom confirms a North American and/or European release.

I hope at least Ys 7 makes it here before the end of the year. Ark of Napistim was fairly decent but it could've been better. (Finished PS2 version, started but didn't complete PSP ver.) I wonder what the new battle system will be like as well…

Is this another anime styled one, or is it one actually worth getting excited about?

just because it's anime styled doesn't mean it's not worth it, you gotta remember most people n japan probably prefer 'anime-style' to more realistic and western like, besides demon's soul of course

I have nothing against fantasy designs, infact im always intruiged by the designs on these RPG's, i just hate they way anime figures are drawn (I'm a fine art student and am particualy interested in figure drawing), they do it on purpose, you look at the backgrounds, which are very skillfully done, but there always let down by the characters.

Does anyone remember the soundtrack for Ys 1&2 on the turbografx16 CD game? One of the best japanese-y rock soundtracks ever made. man the PC engine was such an amazing system.

I was such a big FF and DQ Fan that I did miss out on Ys, so maybe I'll try it out. My true beef here is that why do handhelds get all the remakes and RPG love? I suppose it's just cheaper to make them for a handheld than to amp things up to the PS3 level. Still I'd appreciate a PSN title.

Actually, the last remake was earlier this year. I'm sure you would have heard of it; it's on the DS (Ys Book I and II), though somewhat skewed. So that makes the third remake. Tch…Ys VII not on consoles is slightly unfortunate, but I'm fine.
