John-ShepardWe figured it was only a matter of time before Dragon Ball Z got its own non-animated feature film, and a video game to go along with it.
Namco Bandai Games America and Twentieth Century Fox has announced Dragon Ball: Evolution for the PSP, set for release in April 2009. It will be based on the movie of the same name, and should give all those millions of DBZ fans exactly what they've been waiting for. Said Todd Thorson, director of marketing and public relations for Namco:
"Dragon Ball has been a cultural icon for over the past twenty years and we're excited to be releasing our take on such a beloved title. Dragon Ball: Evolution squeezes every intense fight and special move into the hands of fighting game fans."
Senior Vice President of New Media for Fox L&M added that Dragon Ball is "one of the most successful manga series of all-time," and this movie and game is a result of that "unprecedented popularity." In the interactive title, fans can take their favorite characters from the film and "battle for control of the seven sacred Dragon Balls that have the power to grant any wish." We can expect an innovative fighting system complete with plenty of high-flying and eye-opening attacks, and the management of your Ki (energy) will be crucial in solidifying victory. We'll get a Story mode – Goku heads to battle lord Piccolo – an Arcade Mode, a Mission Mode, and a Training Mode, along with Network Battle for all you online enthusiasts.
As for the movie, it will star Justin Chatwin ("War of the Worlds"), Emmy Rossum (The Day After Tomorrow), Jamie Chung (Samurai Girl) and Chow Yung Fat (yeah, you know who he is), and will be released in theaters on April 8.

I saw the trailer the other day and I agree with you. Why even make it, looks like a sci-fi movie special at best.
You guys are nuts, and obviously not a fan of DBZ.
The cast they have is awsome except for
Chow Yung Fat that is said because everyone else resemble their counter parts and he looks nothing like Master Roshi other than that hes awsome.
I had my douts at first till i saw the trailer but i do hope theres a large display of powers shown.
ok dark, i just watched the trailer and its totally CRAP!! i cant believe they are actually going to try this. change the names and dont call it dragonball and it might make a good kung fu movie but it is NOT!!! dragonball. wow just wow. i agree with arnold EPIC FAIL!! and we are dbz fans and we just dont want our beloved anime to be butchered by this crap.

I mean a white guy as Goku? His hair doesnt even look like his. I did a better job sticking my hair up than whatever the actor has in the movie…
I agree about the hair but goku is white. As a huge fan I find the majority of things we've seen from this movie so far to be disgusting. I'll be angry if this is a success.

Agreed. Doesn't do much for the people who believe Japanese anime to be very dumb. (Not that DBZ the anime itself did much better lol but you gotta love the roots ;))
You gotta give em credit tho, Arnold. They finally made Piccolo green. They first had him pale white. So it was like "Oooh Gokou, fight the evil dracula…"
They were also going to make a psp game and none animated film of neon genesis evangelion but they haven't started it yet. 🙁 as for dbz I was never a huge fan.
Yeah, a live action EVA movie has even been tossed around a bit these last few years. Listed as in pre-production right now but hasn't been given the thumbs up just yet. I'm secretly hoping it never happens, if they put a blemish on that series… I would have to hurt someone.

But really, with so many good DBZ games out there based on the anime, why make a lousy one (no, I don't KNOW it's going to be lousy… but I expect it) based on a movie that also looks lousy?
You can't make real people fly and hover through the air like they do in that show, it's just wrong.
This movie will be good as a comedy of sorts.

I hope it blows up in you guys face. im just happy its something DBZ. im tired of the weak games ATARI keep cranking out, they ruined it after the first one. they should have kept the cinamatic special moves that was cool.
Man… I loved DB/DBZ/DBGT, still do. I was stoked when I heard they were making a live action movie, especially when I found out Stephen Chow would have a hand in it (Kung Fu Hustle FTW), but he's only producing it. Now that I've seen the trailer and the casting (shudder) I fear the worst. I hope, I pray that this movie somehow defies the odds, that it escapes the cartoon/video game to movie stigma… but I'm not holding my breath.
And games based on movies, especially bad movies… well, we all know how those traditionally turn out.
This could be a sad day for Goku and friends.

My husband is so hyped up about this movie not really sure why but i never watched the dragonball cartoon. Where are they showing the trailer kinda curious on what it may look like.

I tired of DBZ quickly but some of these series are really dear to some folks and I think giving them shoddy treatment just to get sales is pretty shameful. Some big series should never get anything less than epic treatment, not unlike Transformers.
How are they gonna make them fight at ultra-fast speed? and teleport?

this movie is going to be SOOO BAADDDDDD. I can't even believe they're still making it. They should just pull it now. I used to watch DBZ, it's what got me into anime so it's not like I don't like it, but this movie is going to be worse then doom live action. It's embarrassing to even watch the trailer. It's so indescribably inaccurate and cheezy, brings tears to my eyes, and not of joy.
They did this with 300 the film as well. We only get a PSP version of the game based on this film?
well i LOVE DBZ. no joke i was addicted to that show a few years ago and i mean ADDICTED. i cant see a live action movie doing the anime any justice. i cant see it doing anything but butcher and make haters out of so many millions of DBZ fans. where can i see the trailer cause i aint seen it yet?
