Sony Reveals PSP Firmware 4.00

While we all anxiously await the PlayStation 3 firmware update that will bring us the in-game XMB and trophy support, we're not forgetting about all you PSP owners out there (and neither is Sony).

According to a recent post by Director of PlayStation Network Operations Eric Lempel over at the official PlayStation blog, we now have the finalized details on firmware update 4.00. This update will release "soon" and add both a Google Internet search function via the XMB interface and the option to alter Video Speed (when viewing a movie through the Memory Stick PRO Duo). Lempel elaborates:

"This new upgrade replicates the Google Internet search experience, delivering the same search results that you'd get at www.google.com. And with a search history recall of 20 items, Web searches couldn't be easier. After you download and install the firmware on your PSP, click on the XMB's Network icon and then the new Internet Search icon. Enter your keywords and then let Google's algorithms do the work. You'll need to be connected to the Internet via a wireless access point or Wi-Fi hotspot. Googling something on the go has never been more convenient on your PSP."

The PSP continues to become more functional with each passing day, and with every new firmware update, there's one more small reason to own Sony's sleek handheld. Well, the software is always most important but 2008 has been a hell of year already for PSP software, yes?

Boring. I'll probably make good use of the google search and maybe play around with the video speed thing but i would've expected some sort of monumental leap with such a big number increase to 4.0.

Just so you know shadow, it's a "leap" of .07. For me, I would say it was more of a baby step, but for you on the other hand… it may be a leap.

I didn't word my coment right. Usually when a company updates the first number there is some sort of massive new feature. With 4.0 i just see minor things. It just seems unworthy of the big designation four-oh.

OK. I get you now. But, you can't just keep on following the same line forever. You might need some sort of leap. Sony may have changed a few of the other features to work better. I noticed that the Internet Radio kinda sucks. Internet Radio doesn't always have all the channels and it also is very VERY slow at loading. I have a 4GB card for mine and it has nothing on it and it loads the card slow too. I'm hoping that it fixes that too.

at least they are still doing stuff for the psp, even if they are in small doses. Im glad they are giving us something, rather than nothing.

What would be nice would be news on a hardware upgrade to the PSP. I suspect if a "new" version of the PSP comes out eventually, it will surely be backward compatible with the old one. Only thing obvious here if that new software released takes advantage of new hardware, that would not be playable on the old PSP units… unless of course developers have the ability to "downgrade" the software to run on the old PSP. I suspect any new upgrade would up the graphic processing power and processor, but how much more, considering there are batteries considerations too?

A new psp would have the ability to get PSN and download psp games. PSP also needs almost the same features of what the PS3 XMB maybe in-game xmb aswell

This update is pretty fly, the slowing down features work great for Southpark episodes and Hardcore porno.

Haven't tried the new Internet Search feature yet though. Just got my PSP updated!

I'm quite disapointed. I was expecting something great for "4.00" from some rumors on a website a while back. Oh well.
