Insomniac: We Can Get More Out Of The PlayStation 3

It seems that no developer is calling for a hardware upgrade. The latest to defend the current generation is Resistance developer, Insomniac.

Senior designer Cameron Christian and writer Jon Paquette spoke to CVG about this week's hotly anticipated sequel, and the duo was asked if the PlayStation 3 was showing its age. Christian first said the machine has plenty left in the tank and as time goes on, they're "finding better ways to optimize and better ways to program for it." Than Paquette said something we always say:

"You remember when the PS2 first came out? The games that came out at the end of that cycle, when people got better at using the hardware, improved. So I think there's still a lot of life in there."

When asked if they'd like to see the current consoles survive for another few years, Christian replied:

"Definitely. We can focus more on content at the moment because we understand the hardware. I think that's big. Being more efficient is one of the big things. Being more efficient, figuring out new tricks to get better looking graphics… we can keep pushing that I think."

Paquette added that there's "too much console rollover," which makes it tough for designers to become experts with any given machine. This is something we hear on a frequent basis from developers, as one can spot the visual upgrades throughout each generation. Also, from a gamer's standpoint, we really don't need the PS4 just yet, so…just keep it under wraps, Sony. We're good for now.

I agree that there's still so much more potential in this gen's hardware. I'm still completely happy with my fatty PS3. In fact, I'd be a little sad if I had to get a PS4 so soon just to be able to keep up with the games. I think Insomniac's got the right idea and that they mostly speak for every dev out there right now.

I believe we at least owe this gen's platforms the courtesy of maxing them out. They've given us so much already, and I don't think we've even hit the very top of their limits. Maybe the 360… Nah, I won't be console racist 🙂 Keep the next consoles at bay for a while longer, please? We're not done yet!

What I'm worried about is how soon the next Xbox will come, cause that may pressure Sony to follow soon after. I'm assuming Sony don't want to fall too far behind again.

If this is the case, I just hope developers will still continue to try and push the ps3 to its limits, even when the ps4 is out.

@daus26

That's true… I hadn't necessarily thought of it from that angle. I'm confident that Sony wouldn't make a stupid move and try to rush things if the next Xbox came out next year. I'd say that Sony would stick to their original date that they may have already planned for it to be released.

I'm also pretty sure that the devs wouldn't want to say goodbye to the PS3 just yet, anyway. So, with statements like this from Insomniac, I think Sony can easily take a hint that gamers aren't done and neither are the devs.

The reviews for R3 are rolling in now and they are all awesome! This is my positive surprise #2 this autumn – I didn't expect neither Deus Ex or Resistance 3 to be this good. IGN gave it a 9/10!
Oh happy days!

True. Reviews for Resistance 3 have been overwhelmingly positive thus far. What's more amazing is that it's pulling 9 to perfect 10 reviews from sources I did not expect (IGN, G4TV, among others). They're all lauding the game's campaign mode as one of the best out there. Everyone who actually cares about good stories should at least try it. I hardly ever play FPS games, but I might as well buy this one too!

"Paquette added that there's "too much console rollover," which makes it tough for designers to become experts with any given machine. "

Sounds like a great argument for the PS4 to use the same family of processor and GPU and not leave the developers that have mastered the architecture in the dust.

Yeah, I would actually feel really bad for the developers that have worked so hard on the ps3's cell structure only to be thrown away next gen. No matter what, it's at least a good thing that Sony are working with the developers on the ps4's development, right?

With the exception of the Game Informer review, the reviews that are coming in have me believing that R3 is going to be a special game.

7/10. I a bit surprise by that score from them. I guess they just didn't like the direction Insomniac took the series.

Lucky you, it's after closing time here in Norway.
But the reviews are so good and the coop mode seems to exactly how I prefer it to be so I'll go get it asap, hopefully already tomorrow!

They're called Game mis-Informer for a reason you know…

i dont know bout that, game informer's reviews tend to be pretty damn fair. that being said, it seems like a really harsh review, as if the reviewer went in with dislike for it.

Its not the 7 that bothers me, its the way it sounds like he wanted to score it much lower than a 7 but decided to give it that score to be safe.

But hey, we all got butt cracks right?

Well, I can tell R3 looks better than R2, technically. So they're walking the talk.

So is the big review coming today Ben?

Hi all PER people long time follower first time posting.
I agree the ps3 still has a ways to go and if the new xbox does come out I say so what. The ps3 still has a lot that insomniac and nautey dog can do with resistance and uncharted. That's the beauty of blue ray.

Thaht guy said something most of the developers should learn:

"optimize and better ways to program…"

Theres no need of a new hardware yet.

I think that Insomniac's quick turnover rate for games does effect them in some way. Sure, they manage to make excellent games year-in, year-out, but the graphics suffer because the upgrades are always incremental and lagging behind the point of up-to-date games. That, of course is what the quotes imply, that they want to improve that development pipeline to be able to puch the technical elements of their games as well as anyone.

Of course, creating the content is something that they've become masters of as I firmly believe that their level design is among the best in the business. I'd like to see them step it up with Overstrike though.

Also: DLC already detailed and priced… blech

I personally thought R&C: ACiT was absolutely beautiful.

That certainly is true, but it's also almost singular in the appearance of the game. There isn't a whole lot of cartoony games to compare it to. Resistance on the other hand simply has never looked quite as good as other games.

Yeah, I think Insomniac has an A and B team. I'm pretty sure I read this years ago. They have one team laying out performing all the ground work for one game, then the other team handles the polishing, refining, and final prep tasks of the prior game. I do agree that R2 really was lacking in some ways up against the competition, visually. It wasn't hard to find lacking texture work, lesser dynamic lighting, and areas in stages that literally looked unfinished. Remember that stage in R2, earlier on, that has like science labs up stair wells. Some pretty heavy battling happens within there. Well, anyway, the main room that contains the labs is black. A big empty void of black. No visible wall, just black. The lighting didn't even make sense. Like they just didn't have the time or something to render it. Anyhow, not to sound all negative, because other elements of it were nice. It does make me wonder if that polarized production process hinders quality. Even CoD teams, I believe, work exclusively on their game for 2 years before release.

Absolutely, that way devs can create many, end of generation, top notch jRPG's!

What excellent timing! ;P

im really disappointed how this has turned out.
from the brilliance of FOM, then it went downhill with 2 and this.
what is it with insomniac and constantly removing features their fans love?
soon they will be removing the rip ya a new one from R&C!
