Insomniac Comments On R&C PS4 And Resistance Sequel

PlayStation fans have some burning questions for Insomniac Games.

First of all, what's Ratchet & Clank going to be like on PlayStation 4? Remember, the team is rebuilding the original R&C adventure from the ground up. And what about the possibility of a Resistance sequel?

Insomniac's Drew Murray briefly addressed these topics in a recent Twitch live stream of Kinda Funny Games during this week's Game Developers Conference. In regards to R&C PS4, Murray says they're putting in "greatest hits" elements from some of the sequels that followed the original 2002 release. And yeah, as you might expect, it's gonna look pretty damn incredible on Sony's new console. He used lots of encouraging adjectives; "stunning" and "beautiful" among them.

As for a new Resistance , Murray admitted that he might have an interest in working on a new series entry. That's about all he'd fess up to, though, and they may continue to work on the recently established IP, Sunset Overdrive . Me, I want Resistance 4 more than any other shooter sequel I can think of. Just do it, Insomniac…too bad it can't be a PlayStation exclusive, though. 🙁

What PS4 Needs More: A Resistance Or Killzone Sequel?

I don't care what anyone says; both franchises have always been great and they were very important during the previous generation.

Resistance: Fall of Man was the only launch title that made the PlayStation 3 worthwhile and it kicked off a brand new franchise, which I will always believe never got enough love and respect from gamers.

Killzone may have began during the PS2 generation but let's face it: Things didn't really get rolling until Killzone 2 on the PS3. One of the first shooters I've ever played where I said, "damn, this actually feels different ," it was very refreshing and beautifully produced. I also don't hold with the idea that Resistance and Killzone went steeply downhill after the games in question; that's not true at all .

But anyway, if you had to pick, which would you rather have: A brand new Resistance or Killzone ? Which do you think would generate the most excitement for PlayStation 4? Which would sell the best? Which would have the best chance of pushing the genre forward again? Me, I'd be good with another Wolfenstein (last year's The New Order was just the ticket in a land dominated by multiplayer, IMO) but I'm probably in the minority.

What say you?

Insomniac Said No To Resistance 4 Due To Franchise Fatigue

A great many wanted Resistance 4 . Lower-than-anticipated sales of Resistance 3 may have impacted the decision to deliver another sequel, but that wasn't one of the reasons Insomniac boss Ted Price cited.

In speaking to GamesRadar , Price said his team "seriously considered" a fourth Resistance but they instead opted to create a new franchise (the co-op-driven Fuse ). Essentially, they wanted to do something new.

Added Price:

"One of the aspects of building franchises, and sticking with them for a long time is that even the team can get franchise fatigue. We had been pushing hard with Resistance from the beginning–which was a tough birth–to Resistance 3, which is a game we were all very proud of. With Resistance 3 it felt like we had capped off, or at least closed a major chapter in that franchise. So, a lot of the team was looking forward to doing something different."

Yeah, well, I still say they should make Resistance 4 for the PS4. I love that series. It's the only FPS that I really adored this past generation, and part of the reason was those awesome weapons… Resistance 3 had the single best arsenal of weapons in any game of the entire generation. Yeah, I said it. Not one was bad and they were all highly inventive and extremely effective. Diversity and imagination! So I wasn't fatigued, but whatever.

Resistance Collection Serves Up FPS Grandness This Winter

Say what you will; these are still some of the very best shooters ever made.

As revealed over at the PlayStation Blog , Insomniac Games and SCEA will deliver the Resistance Collection , which features the three PS3 entries for the agreeable price of $39.99. It's a steal!

Resistance: Fall of Man was probably the single biggest reason to own Sony's new console on launch day (if you were lucky enough), as this FPS gave us a glimpse of the future. Resistance 2 lost a little of the uniqueness the original title presented but was still a damn good game, and Resistance 3 was just plain awesome; still the best arsenal of inventive bad-ass weapons we've seen to date. Insomniac is also tossing in some DLC; there's the Aftermath Pack and a Skin Bundle for Resistance 2 and the Brutality and Survival Packs for Resistance 3 . The more content the better!

In addition, and as is often the case with such Collections on the PS3, this great assembly of FPS awesomeness will also offer 3D and PlayStation Move support. It's unfortunate that sales weren't great for R3 and Insomniac has backed away from the franchise but hey, might as well celebrate what we have, right? The Resistance Collection will be available "this winter" and we can't wait.

Sony Has “No Plans” To Pursue Another Resistance Entry

Sadly, the fantastic Resistance 3 didn't sell all that well, and developer Insomniac has moved on to other things.

So when might we see another entry in the critically acclaimed franchise? Well, SCEE Online producer Daniel Brooke told OPM UK that right now, the series is on hold. "We have no definitive plans," said Brooke, who worked on Resistance: Burning Skies for the PlayStation Vita. It's likely that we'll see the "Resistance" name again somewhere down the road, but there's no knowing when, or what team might adopt it.

It's really quite annoying that this franchise never got the sales recognition it deserved, despite the high critical praise. There are a lot of great shooters out there, of course, but few delivered on the single-player front the way Resistance did. It was even a pioneer in the multiplayer realm, too, as the second title supported 60 players at once. I still remember first seeing Fall of Man , the one PS3 launch game that hinted at what that system was capable of…

Insomniac Is Done With Resistance

'sigh' And this is what happens when perfectly grand shooters fall under the shadow of certain behemoths in the same genre.

Although it's one of the most critically acclaimed new franchises of the current generation, Insomniac says they're abandoning the Resistance franchise .

Studio CEO Ted Price said simply- "We won't be making any more Resistances." Disappointing Resistance 3 sales probably contributed to the decision, although it appeared that Insomniac was moving away from the series earlier last year. Creative director Marcus Smith went on record saying the team hadn't planned a sequel beyond R3, and Insomniac was looking to move in different directions (and evidently, they're doing just that).

As most already know, the team is currently working on their first multiplatform title, Overstrike , which was announced at E3 last year. It's a squad-based shooter but we haven't received many details since the unveiling. As for Resistance , we at PSXE are just plain annoyed. Fall of Man essentially defined the PS3 launch, and the two ensuing titles were absolutely and in all other ways excellent. We still say R3 may have had the single best arsenal of weapons in any FPS this generation and if it weren't for Killzone 3 , R3 likely would've won our Shooter of the Year award.

Oh well. Can't get everything you want.
