Catherine’s Success Doesn’t Rely On Sex Appeal

Catherine has released to widespread critical acclaim and yet, the titillating marketing campaign has managed to spread false rumors and assumptions.

There's no doubt that Atlus went out of their way to present the game as an erotic thriller; the numerous videos and trailers hinting at hot sexcapades and insane nightmares have captured the eye of many a gamer. Furthermore, they used the blonde temptress Catherine (and not Vincent or his steady girlfriend, Katherine) as the official PR lady for the game. Yes, the game is named after her, of course, but the associations involved have had negative repercussions.

I don't like to believe that those who actually read reviews are being misled. No reviewer is out there is telling you the game is cool because of the steamy stuff. And do you know why ? Because it really isn't half as steamy as the advertising hinted. You never actually see anything; Atlus didn't sacrifice its integrity for some T&A. That really didn't happen. But those who don't read reviews and have seen pictures and trailers typically have the wrong impression. They believe people like the game for only one reason, and maybe that reason is even blinding them to certain flaws.

Well, it ain't true. Catherine is great for a whole lot of reasons, and in my eyes, not one of those reasons has anything to do with Vincent and Catherine in bed. And besides, as I said, thanks to some clever camera work, you never see "full" anything. The story requires certain scenes and they're well handled and believe it or not, done with class. The rest of the game is what matters: the gameplay, story, characters, and freaky atmosphere. The substance is there, scoffers. Just play it and see.

The main reason I am interested in the game is due to the use of decision making and the interactive narrative, as Heavy Rain and Farhenheit before it. Though I can't deny I like the idea of checking out other friends answers to the questions 😛

It's the puzzles that've pulled me in!
Last night I had "the Dream"
Climbing, moving blocks, was that a sheep that just fell by?
Yea, perhaps I shouldn't play right before going to bed, but this is the first game in a while that actually challenges me! And I like a good challenge!
The story is great and the characters are well written. This game reminds me of the movie "Eyes wide Shut"

Ben, should I be worried that I'm having the dream?

I'm quite surprised, considering here in the states "Sex Sells" pretty well actually. While no after having played through Catherine I don't see the big deal about the "sex" portion, I could totally see why they'd sell it that way. I mean come on at the end of the day what was the game about anyway? Vincent cheating on his girlfriend. There is no other way around it. For mature folks who dig a great story and love the gameplay we won't be bothered by this. Though I could understand some parents walking out there and being like "Nope my kid isn't getting this". Then again I never really saw any of the Persona games appealing to anyone but the Atlus faithful and a JRPG fans.

I love Catherine. I fell in love with this game way back when I imported it. To even see the game getting some great scores here in the states is awesome. Maybe Atlus tried to go after a wider audience to quickly with a game that might not appeal to them, but at least it's selling. I just want Persona 5 already. Gimmie Atlus please!!!

Anime and sexy babes go hand in hand, but I always saw through that smokescreen to the unique stuff that's actually getting the reviewers attention. Still, I get the feeling there are thousands of fappers hard at work on Catherine Hentai to fill the void… so to speak.

I could've sworn by the early japanese trailers that it was some form of hentai, glad it wasn't. Anyway i played the demo a week ago, and i was vary impressed, i will definitely be picking this up at some point.

I saw the word "clas" in there. As kn the scenes are classy.

Did the hef have anything to do with the scenes? J/k

But seriously I'm gettin this game. The demo was sick. Games don't need t&a

I'm currently going thru Babel mode, and its hard… How tall is the is the Atlar roughly supposed to be? Climbing for 7 minutes before I died and didn't know how far I was from the top.

What drew me into Catherine was the cel-shading.

I think it's rather sad that most games these days don't have cel-shading. Whenever it's done it looks especially amazing with current-gen machines due to the insane number of polygons they can render.

what sex appeal?
the success of the game is all down to the differences of it.
i mean what other game out there is even similar to this?
the only thing putting me off the game is the block puzzles, if it had normal puzzles like portal 2 or something like that id be all over it!

Hmm… depends what your definition of success is I guess. If the game's puzzles are what make it so great, then I blame Atlus for trying to market their game with titillation and failing miserably.
