Atlus Requires Publisher For European Catherine Launch

If you're in Europe and you're hoping to see Catherine , you had better give Atlus a publisher recommendation.

It has been reported that Atlus' ambitious drama won't be released in Europe, and Atlus PR and sales manager Aram Jabbari told Joystiq there are "no plans at this time" for one big reason: the developer needs a publisher for that region. Atlus doesn't have the European infrastructure so they need someone to distribute the title; Jabbari reminds us of Persona 4 and 3D Dot Game Heroes as other examples. The former was released by Square Enix and the latter by SouthPeak, so European gamers got those titles. If Atlus can find a partner, our friends overseas will have a shot at this cinematic puzzler. If not…

Well, these difficulties tend to happen when trying to launch a game worldwide. Just because a developer nails down a publisher doesn't mean they have access to the globe; maybe that publisher only distributes in one territory. So anyway, if you're in a PAL territory and you want Catherine , just have patience…if it's successful here, Atlus will try harder for a European publishing partner, right?

It's a good thing PS3 games aren't region locked. I'll be importing this as soon as it drops.

Good for you Cole, never let imaginary lines on a map impede your gaming.

no not imaginary lines but I well let paying TWICE the price of what the game would cost me in stores impede my gaming

That's too bad, Duo.. In my case, importing costs roughly the same price as buying locally.

Sounds like a job for SCEE….

That would be nice, but somehow it doesn't seem very likely considering that this is a multi-platform game we're talking about. If none of the more obvious options bite like Ubisoft or Tecmo Koei then I would suggest Ghostlight as an alternative. They've published numerous Shin Megami Tensei games in Europe which were of course also developed by Atlus.

Sony (SCEE) published Ghostbusters in Europe after it lacked a publisher, and it was multi-platform. Of course Sony wanted it published at the same time as the BluRay release of the original, remastered, movie, and in Europe that wasn't going to happen because no one was lined up to publish it, so SCEE stepped up.

Well if I'm not mistaken Sony owns the rights to the Ghostbusters franchise. So they did have an additional vested interest there. But regardless I think the main determining factor in this case is how well Catherine does in the states in terms of sales.

This game deserves to be published in the whole world. On the other hand, as Cole said in the first comment, there is no region block, but importing is not supposed to be a normal thing, it takes more time an sometimes there are language problems.

On another note, Happy birthday to me 🙂

I ordered Demons Souls in from the US, then months later Namco published in Europe with that cool black world tendency collectors edition. I can see the same thing happening here for Catherine. I'm gonna hold off for a while. Played the demo with my US account and it's definitely one I will get eventually.

I'll be taking donations and offers from venture capitalists to start a publishing house that published obscure weirdo games worldwide. Feel free to shower me with cash. We'll call it WorldVAC, World's Videogame Action Committee.

If worse comes to worse, I'll just have to import it….which really isn't all that bad 🙂

Although it would be nice if Europe wasn't left out in the cold….no, seriously. It's actually raining ridiculously in the U.K.

Whatever happened to SUMMER is beyond me…
