The NPD Group reported that total 2010 software sales were flat in comparison to 2009, but a new first-quarter 2011 report says consumer spending is now growing .
The NPD says Q1 2011 consumer dollars spent hit $5.9 billion in the US, which is up 1.5% in a year-over-year comparison. That number counts "other monetization methods" such as used games, rentals, subscriptions, digital full-game downloads, social network games, downloadable content, and mobile games; $1.85 billion was spent on all this in the first quarter alone. said the NPD's Anita Frazier:
"While the new physical retail channel still generates the majority of industry sales, our expanded research coverage allows us to assess the total consumer spend across the growing number of ways to acquire and experience gaming, including mobile apps and downloadable content."
One can only hope that come fall, given the myriad of amazing games on the slate, consumer spending will continue to rise, as will industry profit. For the most part, the big hitters have yet to arrive in 2011 and when they drop, the charts are gonna light up. And yes, it'll be due to more than just Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 .
This is awesome! Comes as no surprise to me, as my store has been consecutively crushing last years sales across the board! This Fall we will be seeing some amazing #'s in the industry! Great time to be a gamer!

it is indeed. i think it is worth mentioning that the npd only tracks the na market but those numbers say a lot about its sheer worth. that's why the na market is so important in the overall console war, and why i try to watch it as closely as i can,
Speaking of North America and the United States, I believe it's the main reason The 360 is still around and such a focal point.
no doubt about it. the US is 360 territory for sure. it has been both painful and somewhat puzzling to watch the dramatic rise of the 360 here. for whatever reasons sony has struggled in the na market.
Well I'm all for buying an American Company based product, but I still root for SONY and PlayStation.I think it's really about what came to the market first. I mean not too insult the American Market as I'm apart of it, but Americans do want what's newer and the latest on the shelves (Even if it had shoddy hardware). I suppose the 360 coming to the customers first was such a drastic change over the PS2 that everyone really took to it. Now the customer is finally seeing the PS3 as a better investment even though with the 360 Slim model being a much better and stable product than it's predecessor.
and for good reasons.
I glad to have played a small part in those statistic by spending an yearly $3000 average on gaming(before I got laid off 2 months ago).
But in all honestly, about 1/3 of it went towards accessories, plus games/consoles/hand-held's I've also added into my retro gaming collections too.

It's called copyright, too few people pay attention to it, and it's increasingly easy to flout – which is why the various industries involved want more enforcement options.
