From the moment Orson Welles read H.G. Wells' "War of the Worlds" on the radio on Halloween night in 1938, we've all been obsessed with aliens.
Then came the 1953 movie and the 2005 remake and now, developer Other Ocean Interactive will deliver the beloved sci-fi classic to the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live service. Dubbed a "2D cinematic platformer" inspired by the novel in question, players are on an adventure of survival; a single person attempting to escape chaos and destruction during an alien invasion in 1950s London. We'll get our first look at the project at E3 next week.
While the game parallels the timeline and events from the 1953 film, we'll still get a "new story arc, characters, locations, and sub-plots." The press release says the designers pay homage to past cinematic platformers like Flashback , Out Of This World and Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee . Said Mike Mika, Other Ocean head of development:
"As a developer, we are extremely fortunate to have access to this beloved franchise. The team and I are huge fans of the original rotoscoped cinematic platformers of early PC gaming. This is a dream project for everyone on the team. Having the ability to approach the game in a completely retro way and pay homage to one of our favorite periods in gaming is more than we could ask for."
The War of the Worlds will drop some time this summer. Can you outwit a giant walking tripod…?

I am going to be keeping my eye on this one. I loved the book and the movies.
The premise sounds very interesting to me.
Wow… "Flashback", now *that* was a unique platformer back in the days. Released for Amiga, was it not? It must have been the first time ever a game featured "motion scan" as far as I can recall.
Other than that, your recap of War Of The Worlds history so far made me think: What an *awsome* rpg game "War Of The Worlds" could be. The entire setting just screams coolness… Plus the story is very game friendly, with basically being just a battle of survival!

Beamboom… yes, "Flashback" was an Amiga release. It was one of my favourite titles for the platform. Funnily enough, as I still have an Amiga 1200, I can still play it today. Problem is my Amiga is not working at the moment and I would need to get it repaired.
Just for your interest, if you head over to a website called "Amigakit", you will see how much stuff there is still available for the Amiga, including the latest models and OS version.

Whaat? New Amiga models and OS upgrades? Gotta see that.
I got two Amiga 500 and large cardboard boxes full of games (the games came in huge boxes back then 😀 ) down in the basement, hopefully stored safe and dry. Not to mention a bag full of floppies…
One day I'll unpack it and fire it up. Just for old times sake. 🙂
But what if they released more Amiga classics on PSN! That'd be something. Like Pinball Fantasies, that was also originally an Amiga title, and I just had to buy it the moment I saw it in the psn store.
EDIT: Omg, I had no idea Amiga was this alive and kicking. Browsing the UK store of Amigakit was one huge walk down memory lane. All those Amiga-related hardware names and expressions… Makes me wonder if my first computer, an Oric-1, is still around too!
/me is heading off to google for Oric. 🙂

Okay, this does sound pretty awesome. I was hoping it would be in 1890s England like the novel but this works.
I am just curious if they will use the floaty crafts of the 50s, the tripods from the '05 that are shielded, or the good old walkers that aren't shielded.

Cool, I like retro and I like War of the Worlds.
One thing we know World, is that world will not end with them 🙂

I remember playing some kind of really primitive War of the Worlds game way back around the late 70's, early 80's, but the heck if I can remember the exact name of that game, or for what platform it was on (damned CRS syndrome)
WOW, why so late!?
really enjoyed the movie!
hmmmmmmmm, maybe one to keep my eye on once the PSN store decides to start working again!
spent the last 20+ hours trying to download the infamous 2 demo, and DNF demo but everytime i load something i keep getting that bloody 800 blah blah blah error code!
sigh sony can you do anything right!?
It's working fine for me. You must have some bad luck. 😮
