John-Shepard3D is a new technology for the home and although many still don't have the capability, more 3D games are coming.
Last year, SCEE boss Mick Hocking announced that 20 first-party PS3 games were being developed with that fancy 3D option and overall, more than 50 3D titles were in the works for Sony's flagship console. At the time, he didn't happen to mention when we'd see those games but now we have a better idea: it has been revealed that PS3 owners will get "nearly 30 titles with stereoscopic 3D visuals" in 2011. A few are already here – Killzone 3 , MLB 11: The Show , etc. – and others like MotorStorm: Apocalypse , SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs and Uncharted 3: Drake's Fortune will also boast the immersive feature. As for how many are taking advantage, here's an indication- Sony says around 20% of those who downloaded the KZ3 demo nabbed the 3D version. This points towards a higher-than-expected demand for the new technology, in our eyes.
So, are you aboard the 3D train yet? If so, what do you think of it? Does it immeasurably enhance the experience, or do you see it as more of a gimmick?
As soon as I move into my house I'm buying a 3D TV for the game room. I'm starting to feel like I'm missing out on something big. I really think the gimmicky feeling is starting to subside.
You might wanna test it at the store first, I hear about headaches and eyeball pain sometimes. Haven't seen one myself though.
Our local Best Buy has a 3DTV/PS3 demonstration setup.
Maybe yours does, too?
I've only seen some basketball game and MLB: The SHow in 3D. The effect is nice, but not without it's setbacks. The visuals appeared to be more "jaggy" and the graphics detail seemed dialed back just a bit.
I see PS3 3D gaming right now as something of a one step forward and one step back situation. I think I'll be good waiting until a future generation comes along where 3D is at the heart of the technology's design. That, and preferably 3DTV's that don't require glasses.
I have mentioned a number of times when ranting with Highlander about the PS3's technical specifications, and how I felt 3D was not for this generation.
3D on the PS3 is a go between – it will come to full fruition with PS4 when the PS hardware has evolved into something like x4 its current power. It will need it if you want to have true 3D HD for dual 1080p per channel stereoscopic viewing.
Sony is squeezing everything they can out of their current platform, and rightly so, but it doesn't mean it can be done well, especially if the hardware was not really designed for it. I don't believe Sony were thinking true stereoscopic 3D gaming back in 2003/2004 when they were busy designing the PS3.
They are obviously trying to use software to extend its capabilities beyond what it was designed to do. For current generation I think it works well besides the obvious memory constraints that can make life difficult for developers. Annoyances such as having to use valuable Cell "clock cycles" and "time" for code optimisation to try and create very efficient streaming routines in order to overcome this constraint.
While current 3D games on the PS3 may be fun for a while… I personally will only get into 3D gaming when the PS4 comes out…
I believe it will be built from the ground up with 3D in mind… it will really be a paradigm shift and we may finally see a hardware platform that has the type of power we were expecting in PS3…
Currently the PS3 gives millions the world over much fun and enjoyment, but PS4 is the platform to own all I think, with the kind of power and memory boost I think will do justice to true HD gaming, the way it should be…

Anybody remember the "FX" chip for SNES games?
It made 3D games (polygonal) like Star Fox and Stunt Race FX possible on what was primarily a 2D game system. While a bit crude for 3D, it was pretty cool at the time. But it wasn't until the following generation of game consoles before 3D really took off as being the standard with the PSX and N64 being designed from the ground up to render 3D geometric shapes.
Because you can't play 3D PC games on a 55" PC monitor.
yea, but spend 2K on a 3D gaming PC and monitor, or spend 5K on a 55inch 3D TV.

Meh, great games, leave the 3d. If I had loads of money I would go out and grab a 7.1 surround sound system with a fantastic amplifier. 3d tv doesn't even enter into the equation.
Nice. Loving my 3Dtv. The more I use it more I find it was worth the price. So far I have GT5, Killzone 3, Super Stardust HD. Will soon have Uncharted 3, Socom 4. Hell if Crysis 2's 3D turns out to be any good I may get that as well to add to the collection.

I think I read somewhere that Crysis's (say that out loud, it's fun=p )3D is fake and a half-job effort.

bredren what does GT5 look like in 3d? still have yet to experience the 3d feauture for any game. getting ready to upgrade tv but cant decide if its worth the money.

GT5 looks decent in 3D. Cockpit view looks best. Doesn't pop out as much as other games though. I think 3D was just added at the end before they launched the game. It's not as polished as Killzone 3, SuperStar Dust HD or Socom 4.

It's difficult to enjoy 3D anything when it's offered as an alternative option. We have a 3D TV in the living room and only out of curiosity have I tried a couple of games on it to check out the 3D feature. It's pretty and enjoyable but since I have a TV and the PS3 connected upstairs it's not a primary feature for me.
If games were made like movies…where they purposely throw things towards you while watching the screen, then gaming in 3D would be more than just a "quick try". For now, I've only noticed games in 3D appear to have more depth…which looks nice, but does nothing in changing the experience.
I am hoping they start doing just that. When you get a chance, check out the newest Uncharted 3 3D trailer that's on PSN. It looks as though Naughty Dog might be doing just that. The quick gameplay sequences pop out more than other games.
Could work for certain games, but wow has that throwing crap at the screen focus turned 3D movies into utter crap when watched in 2D.
I hate the throw it at you feature, if it makes sense, ok. But so many movies have actors reaching out way in front of them for every silly thing and it gets beyond ridiculous.
If it's utilized correctly sure, but in real life stuff doesn't fly at my face every few seconds. When I talk to people they don't generally throw their hands right at my face.
Quality is what is important.
i doubt many games will ever have pop out to the effect of movies, because for some reason every dev thats talked about it dislikes it, they call it distracting.
and takes you out of the immersion.
i love it though, thats the whole reason i bought a 3D TV!
well not exactly, mine was up the sh*tter and, well, buying a new TV that does not support 3D is like buying a car without air con!
I still haven't even seen 3D TVs in action, my friend has one but when I was there last week extenuating circumstances kept me from trying it out.
I was at best buy the other day and they had a sony 3d tv set up with the glasses, move, and mlb the show.
Seeing that setup, I thought what an awesome way to try it out, I love my move, love my hd, why not try some 3d baseball.
Yeah, stupid best buy, the batteries in the glasses were dead. Although I did learn that the glasses don't fit me very well at all.
Very tight on my head, which is odd because my head is smaller than most guys I know. The glasses would give me a headache if they were always that tight.

I haven't had a chance to see what the 3d looks like, but I don't really have any desire to wear those bulky glasses while gaming.
I still want better tech before I buy in. Will we ever have awesome 3d without glasses? I don't know, but I do know I am willing to wait for something better.
I am not in the least interest of 3D gaming or movie on a home TV. Great in imax theater.
I will guarantee u that with the current state of 3D technology, u will only end up with headache, sore eye and easy fatigueness, and sore ear.
U just can not withstand the long hours of grinding like 8-10 hours in demons souls say, it's only fun for try out and nolvalty feeling, it can not be played with hardcore long hour play jrpgs, say.

Pretty bold statement for someone who doesn't have a 3DTV. I know some will have issues. Thats expected. My wife for example got a headache after an hour of watching a movie. Me on the otherhand, I've been able to play GT5, Killzone 3 and Super Stardust HD for hours on end with no problems at all.
well, it is great to know it worked great from your feedback and it might be true that it can be enjoyable for a while for new visual experience, but with the heavy glasses, dark light through the tinted glass and i am talking about very specific style of gaming, for example hardcore rpg gaming for hours and hours, days and days, then at least the current state of 3D is not the way to go. From the try out experience at Bestbuy, I know that it will not last long for gamers playing games for long hours and days, i.e. RPG or strategy games, especially grinding or completionist.
I might end up still getting one 3D TV in the future or even near future, but even with that, I think i will only use it for either casual gaming like interactive gaming at most. Never for serious long hour RPG gaming, that was essentially what I was trying to say, but again, that is my personal preference and I felt about it according to my try-out exp. with it.

For the people who have 3D they know how cool it is. I played Killzone 3 and the snow that you go through hits your face and sticks like your going through a real snow storm. I don't think it is going to be a fad so all you haters better get ready to adopt because the future is here and will probably be on the next generation of consoles as well!
The only flaw is that 3D is not healthy if you're on a marathon especially during the weekends.
Is this fixable?
3D doesn't mean nothing unless you got the hardware to support it and given the fact that 3D adoption is very there is no real point in having it.
With all that in mind if Sony believe 3D gaming is going to somehow force people to run out and buy 3D tv then they are obviously mistaken. In fact its for this reason why I praise Microsoft for not jumping on the 3D bandwagon given the futility of 3D games.
You're mistaken. Tons of people I know, specifically my friends who ditched their Xbox for a PS3 are saving to buy or have already bought a 3D tv.
You praise Microsoft for not jumping on the bandwagon!? Same for nintendo too. GTFO, Sony is leading the pack when it comes to innovation! Sony isnt forcing anyone to play 3D, they just gave us the option.
Oh yeah, just to let you know, I went out and got a 3D TV JUST for Killzone 3. Feel free to praise a company for producing a system not capable of rendering true stereoscopic 3D. Thats prob the reason they "havent jumped on the bandwagon", cause THEY CANT!

a couple things ive decided about 3D, and would love to see changed.
1: it really effects the visuals.
every game you play in 3D, the frames are cut in half normally down from 30 to closer to 20.
the resolution is cut in half, normally from 720P down to sub HD!
the screen itself gets darker, put the glasses on and its even darker!
watch a game in 2D its nice and bright and vibrant, but in 3D its not as bright, and looks dull.
its like 2D is staring at the sun, and 3D is staring at the sun but through those filters people use to watch eclipses.
the games just dont look anywhere near as good!
2: the effects themselves.
there is so little pop out, i was expecting it to be like movies where everything pops out, and when it does its in your face.
games though, when things pop out its very rare, and when they do they pop out maybe 10cms, unlike the movies where its straight into your face!
the depth is also not as noticeable as movies, and you honestly not notice it after a while.
play a hour and it just feels like normal you stop noticing the added depth.
whats the point of something, if your not going to notice it and be able to enjoy it?
3: the options.
on the PC you can change the convergence, sights, refresh rate, theres heaps of effects you can tweak to get the best experience.
ps3 games though?
a on off switch, and a depth switch!

one thing ps3 games really need is those options PC games have had FOR YEARS!
another option needed is to be able to tell your TV how far away from it you are.
only PoP collection has this option, all games need it!
4: health.
there have been allot of studies saying watching 3D for extended periods of time can effect your eye sight.
i never believed them, but now after using it for a good 2 hours a day for 4 months now i think there right.
everything closeup now is just blur, it takes me allot longer to focus on things close up.
my radio clock for example, everytime i check to see what time it is i see a blur of numbers it takes a few seconds for me to be able to focus on the numbers and be able to read the time.
never had that problem before!
once games work out those kinks 3D will be here to stay, and hopefully can finally give us the experience it should.
but till then, its just going to be a gimmick!

I am really planning to upgrade to 3d. I am yet to see the 3d on ps3 in action. don't have the funds though.
_______ Obviously doesn't know anything about 3d tv's. The screen actually gets brighter to make up for the tinted glasses. I'll probably have to disagree on one thing though. While i do like things popping out at you.(Motorstorm Pacific Rift- Dirt flying into the screen), I prefer the depth. It is really cool in KZ3, Crysis 2 and COD. Much better on KZ3 and Crysis 2 though. The depth is really awesome. The only problem i'm having with it is this. I have a new 3d plasma, for the first 100- 200 there is a break in period where it's best to turn brightness and contrast way down. I'm just having a problem seeing people in say crysis 2 right now. Again this is only because i have turned alot of things down for the break in period. Other than that, i've been floored plenty of times watching avatar in 3d and step up 3d. Horribe movie but great 3d. As Jawk said, Stardust HD 3D looks really cool and KZ3 and Crysis 2 are pure eye candy.
